WILLIAM H. VALENTINE
DOVER, Del. -- William H. Valentine of Dover, died peacefully at home with his family after a valiant fight with a brain tumor on Aug. 24, 2001. He was 54 years old.
Mr. Valentine was born on April 5, 1947, in Cumberland, Md., to William L. and Dorothy Ellen Long Valentine. He was a 1965 graduate of Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Md., where he was President of his class and a varsity football player. Bill earned his undergraduate degree from Arkansas State University, and his Master's Degree from James Madison University.
He moved to Delaware 18 years ago, and was employed by the Division of Child Mental Health as Director of the Middletown Residential Treatment Center. He was currently employed by the Division of Child Mental Health for whom he worked for 15 of the last 18 years. He was a former Employee of the Year for the division.
His interests included golf, hiking, Native American culture, camping, snowmobiling, fishing and his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, William L. Valentine in December 1989. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy E. Valentine of Cumberland, Md.; his wife, Karen Valentine of Dover; two sons, William Tyler Valentine, at home, and Christopher Sean Valentine and his wife Jennifer of Strausburg, Va.; a daughter, Kimberly Dawn Paoli and her husband Joseph of Wilmington; a sister, Sharon Mulvey and her husband Butch of Winchester, Va.; grandchildren, Alexa and Mary Kate Paoli of Wilmington, Del.; his mother and father-in-law, Jean and Paul Kirkpatrick of Bokeeli, Fla.; several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles; three sisters-in-law; and a brother-in-law.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 East Labanon Road, Dover. The Rev. Ron Wuest will officiate. Friends will be received at the funeral chapel on Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
Interment will follow the funeral service on Tuesday in Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica, Del.

KATHLEEN F. BURKHART
RIDGELEY, W.Va. -- Kathleen Faith (Clark) Burkhart, 82, of Ridgeley, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Nov. 11, 1918, in Ridgeley, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Elsie (Duckworth) Clark. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard Barnard Burkhart, April 11, 1980 and three sons.
Mrs. Burkhart was a schoolteacher, having taught grades one through three as Short Gap School during World War II. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Ridgeley.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Lewis, Wiley Ford; one granddaughter, Mary Kathleen Perry and husband Justin L. Perry Sr., Cumberland; two great-grandchildren, Rachael Elizabeth and Justin L. Perry Jr., both of Cumberland; two sisters, Margaret McLaughlin, Ridgeley, Agnes Comer, LaVale; one sister-in-law, Sarah Snyder and husband Joseph, Ridgeley, and many nieces and nephews.
At Kathleen's request, her body was cremated at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. Crematorium.
There will be no visitation.
A Memorial service will be conducted at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland on Monday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Timothy L. Monn officiating.
WILLIAM E. LEASURE
OLDTOWN -- William Edwin Leasure, 62, of Oldtown, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home, Mt. Airy.
Born Oct. 22, 1938, in Cumberland, he was the son of William Daniel and Eugenia (Steckman) Leasure. He was preceded in death by one sister, Clara Hazel; three brothers, Harry Leasure, Michael Leasure, and Harold Leasure.
Mr. Leasure was a Methodist by faith.
Surviving are three sisters, Naomi Cuff, Hemet, Calif., Glema Delawder, Cumberland, Ramona Leasure, Baltimore; two brothers, Peter Leasure, Oldtown, Howard Leasure, Ravenna, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Joseph DiNicola officiating.
FREDERICK A. SMITH
CUMBERLAND -- Frederick Adam Smith, 81, of Willow Valley Apartments, formerly of Cecilia Street, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at his residence.
Born Aug. 28, 1919, in Eckhart, he was the son of the late Robert Granville Smith Sr. and Eva Mazie (Lenhart) Smith. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Maxine Smith, Oct. 18, 2000; two brothers, Robert G. Smith Jr. and Thomas L. Smith.
Surviving are five nephews, James Smith, Tuscon, Ariz., John Smith, Flintstone, Craig Smith, Harrisburg, Pa., Greg Smith, Calif., Paul Smith, Orlando, Fla.; three nieces, Julie Isner, Cumberland, Pam Reffitt, Penny Browning, both of Fla.; a sister-in-law, Marion Smith, Kissimmee, Fla.; eight great nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with Pastor James Glass officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland.
VIVIAN M. LINNENBROGGER
ECKHART -- Vivian M. Linnenbrogger, 90, formerly of Eckhart, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 23, 1911, in Eckhart, she was the daughter of the late John and Fannie (Nelson) Rase. She also was predeceased by her husband, Owen Linnenbrogger and her son, Dale Delaney Sr.
She was a cook and manager of the Eckhart Elementary School Cafeteria for 35 years; a member of Eckhart United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir for over 70 years, and a member of the Helping Hands Society.
Surviving are her grandchildren, Dr. Dale Delaney Jr., of Kinston, N.C., and Vickie Arnold, Street, Md. She also is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jessie Delaney of Baltimore and five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating.
Interment will be in Eckhart Cemetery.
DARWIN PORTMESS
PAW PAW, W.Va. -- Darwin Portmess, 88, of Paw Paw, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Cumberland.
He was born Dec. 12, 1912, at Woodrow, and was a son of the late Roger and Rena Pfeiffer Portmess.
He was a truck driver and a retired correctional officer. He was a member of Woodrow Union Church and was a member of the Paw Paw Senior Citizens Center.
His wife, Josephine Hill Portmess preceded him in death on June 26, 1993.
He is survived by two step-sons, Harry Edward Ott and his wife, Carolyn of Louisa, Va., John T. Ott Sr. and his wife Janice of Paw Paw; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kimble Funeral Home, Paw Paw.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at the Kimble Funeral Home in Paw Paw, with the Rev. Herman Goede officiating.
Burial will be in Woodrow Cemetery, Paw Paw.
