JESSIE L. CALHOUN
FROSTBURG - Jessie Louise (Engle) Calhoun, 98, of Saint Vincent DePaul Nursing Home, Frostburg, formerly of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 13, 1901, in Whitmer, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lorenza Dow and Zirna (Bennett) Engle. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Hobart Calhoun; three brothers, Price, Charlie and Don; two sisters, Gladys and Lona; and two daughters-in-law, Betty J. Calhoun and Dorothy Calhoun.
Mrs. Calhoun was retired from the Celanese Corporation. She was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Hobart Gale Calhoun, Cumberland, and Charles O'Brian Calhoun, Manassas, Va.; four grandchildren, Sandra K. Crippen, Cumberland, Michael G. Calhoun and wife Shelby, Cumberland, Jeannie Martin and husband Donald, Manassas, and Molly Mello and husband Robert, Manassas; five great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted there on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard H. Jewell officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland.
MARK D. CANNON
NEW BALTIMORE, Pa. - Mark David Cannon, 26, of 227 Juanita St., New Baltimore, formerly of Cumberland, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, shortly after being shot in a hunting accident on Martins Mountain.
Born Oct. 21, 1972, in Cumberland, he was the son of Darlene J. (Youngblood) Cannon, of New Baltimore, and the late Charles Edward (PeeWee) Cannon Sr.
Mr. Cannon was a life member of the National Rifle Association.
Surviving besides his mother are two sisters, Trena Gayle Lee and husband Audie, Cumberland, and Wenda Sue Lashbaugh and husband Michael, Cumberland; one brother, Charles Edward Cannon Jr. and wife Stephanie, Cumberland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held there Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. David F. Dayhoff officiating.
Burial will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Long, John Cannon, Robert Cannon, Michael Collins, Michael Lashbaugh and Audie Lee.
GRAYDON TIMOTHY "TIM"BROADWATER
LONACONING - Graydon Timothy "Tim"Broadwater, 50, of Toby Road, Orion, Mich., formerly of Lonaconing, died Jan. 1, 1999, at home.
Born July 5, 1948, in Frostburg, he was a son of Graydon Kinsley Broadwater and Florence (Weir) Broadwater, Lonaconing.
Tim was a member of Pontiac Church of the Brethren. He was a wrestler, bowler and golfer. He was a wedding photographer and he also loved to cook. Tim was formerly employed at the Bus & Truck Division of General Motors.
Surviving, in addition to his parents are a son, Jeffrey William Broadwater, Georgia; a granddaughter; two brothers, David Weir and wife, Patty, Lonaconing, and Kimberly Broadwater and wife, Deborah Jean, Waterford, Mich. Also surviving are four nieces and nephews.
At Mr. Broadwater's request his body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Inurnment will be in Green Cemetery, Lonaconing.
Arrangements are being handled by the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing.
RUTH F. CHAMBERS
ANNAPOLIS - Ruth Finnell Chambers, 86, died April 27, 1999, at the Ginger Cove retirement community, Annapolis.
Born in Keyser, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lena Blackman and Charles Newton Finnell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Livingston Chambers, who taught at Potomac State College in the 1930s and later at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
Mrs. Chambers was a graduate of Potomac State College and of Brenau College in Georgia.
She is survived by three nephews, Thomas Finnell, Keyser, Charles Finnell, Vienna, Va., Robert Finnell, Fairfax, Va.; one niece, Mary Lou Holderby, Keyser; and one sister-in-law, Elloine Finnell, Keyser.
Interment will be in the National Memorial Park, Falls Church, Va., on Saturday, May 8.
WILLIAM J. CRUTHERS
CUMBERLAND - William Joseph Cruthers, 97, of 701 Furnace St., Cumberland, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, July 8, 1999, at his home.
Born July 17, 1901, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late William S. Cruthers and the late Mary E. (Stewart) Cruthers. He was also preceded in death by his wife, the late Rose (Spearman) Cruthers; and a daughter, Rose Marie DeMartino.
Mr. Cruthers was the former owner of Bill's Seafood Palace on Virginia Avenue in the early 1940s. He relocated to California and returned to Cumberland in the mid-1960s. He will be sadly missed by his daughter, grandson and his many friends at Willow Valley.
Surviving are his daughter, Marcella E. Wright, Eckhart; and a grandson, Jack Harper, LaVale.
At the request of Mr. Cruthers his body was cremated. A private interment of his cremated remains will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
The family requests that memorials be made to SS. Peter & Paul Parish Restoration Fund.
Arrangements are under the direction of Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland.
PHYLLIS G. CARE
OLDTOWN - Phyllis Grace Care, 71, of 13400 Arctic Ridge Lane, Oldtown, died Sept. 25, 1999, at home.
Born March 27, 1928, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of late Dudley Simmons and E. Blanche (Simmons) Simmons.
Mrs. Care was a member of the Frierson-Nichol Post 8 American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving are a husband, Robert F. Care, Sr., Oldtown; a son, Robert F. Care, Jr., and wife Dianne, Oldtown, with whom she resided; two daughters, Georgianna Garvin and husband Darwin, Lakeland, Fla., and Jacalyn Ann Patterson and husband John, Colora, Md.; two sisters, Marjorie Kerns and Louise Brown, both of Baltimore; four grandchildren, Melissa Jenis, Elkton, Md., Heather Care, Morgantown, W.Va., Robert F. Care III, Oldtown, and Elizabeth Care, Oldtown; and two great-grandchildren, Mathew Steward and Jenna Reeves.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. and a memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
Mrs. Care's body was cremated the remains will be interred at the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
VIRGINIA E. "GINNY" BITTINGER
SMITHSBURG - Virginia E. "Ginny" Bittinger, 59, of Cristy Avenue, Smithsburg, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born in Clear Spring, May 20, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Clyde L. "Bill" and Gladys Dickerhoff Bartles.
She was a graduate of Clear Spring High School class of 1957. She was a member of North American Rod & Gun Club Ladies Auxiliary, Hagerstown.
She is survived by her husband, Harry C. Bittinger; one daughter, Patti L. Haines, Cavetown; one son, Eric A. Bittinger, Smithsburg; two step-daughters Melanie R. Saxton, Houston, Texas, Christina L. Koehn, Katy, Texas; three brothers, Richard L. Bartles, Hancock, Donald G. Bartles, Mount Vernon, Ill., William S. Bartles, Frederick; and six grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, with Pastor Julie Brigham officiating.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Clear Spring.
Family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
GLENN L. CALHEIM
BEDFORD, Pa. - Glenn L. Carlheim, 68, of Dark Hollow Road, Bedford, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at the James E. VanZandt VA Medical Center, in Altoona.
Born Aug. 22, 1931, in Cumberland Valley TWP, he was the son of the late George W. and June A. (Oster) Calheim.
On May 15, 1965, in Cumberland, he married
Mary Jane Karns and she survives along with his two sisters, Jane wife of Howard Dickerhoof, of Cumberland, and Ella R. Mangus, of Hyndmand, RD 1.
Mr. Calheim was a graduate of the Bedford High School class of 1952 and served with the U.S. Navy on the USS Rehoboth during the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of the Cumberland VFW Post 1411, and a member of Teamsters local 453 out of Cumberland. He drove truck for Swak Trucking, retiring in 1989 after 13 years. He was an avid outdoor sportsman.
Friends will be received at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, Bedford, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Wright, officiating.
Burial will be in the Providence Church cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
