EDITH DILLEY BENDER
FROSTBURG - Edith Dilley Bender, 88, of the St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Center, formerly of 5 Standish St., Frostburg, died Friday, July 23, 1999.
Born on May 15, 1911, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Annie Agnes (Kirby) and Bernard D. Dilley. She also was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ralph P. Bender, in 1998; her sister, Angela Dilley Arnold; and her brother, John B. Dilley.
She is survived by one brother, Francis D. Dilley, Bethesda; one son, Ralph P. Bender Jr., Frostburg; three daughters, Frances Celine Kropff and her husband Ernest, Silver Spring, Catherine B. Abbott and her husband Allan, Taneytown, Martha J. Lashbaugh and her husband William F., Jr., Eckhart; and her sister-in-law, Madelyn Thomas and her husband William, and their son Douglas, Frostburg.
She also is survived by eight grandchildren, John, Michael and Liana Kropff, Juliana Abbott Gehr, Alana Abbott Smith and Mary Edith Abbott Blubaugh, Ellen Lashbaugh Kitzmiller and William W. Lashbaugh III; and five great-grandchildren, Dylan Smith, Madison Gehr, Brant T. and Gregory Kitzmiller, and Macy Lashbaugh.
Mrs. Bender was a retired school teacher who attended State Normal School and graduated from Frostburg State College and began her career at Piney Plains School. She held teaching positions at Cresaptown, and Beall Elementary and Junior High School in Frostburg. She was a member of St. Michaelis Catholic Church, and St. Michaelis Choir and Sodality; Maryland Retired Teachers Association; and Allegany County Retired Teachers Association. She also volunteered at the Frostburg Museum and at St. Michaelis Catholic Church.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, from 2 to 4 on Sunday afternoon. Prayers will be recited at 3:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. William E. Moody at St. Michaelis Catholic Church in Frostburg on Monday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in St. Michaelis cemetery following the Mass.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Vincent de Paul for the loving care, respect and concern they provided during the years Mrs. Bender was in their care.
JACK D. CAGE JR.
CUMBERLAND - Jack Dale Cage Jr., born April 6, 1935, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at his residence in Cumberland.
He was the son of the late Jack Dale Cage Sr. and Mary Margaret Cage Grimes
He is survived by his stepfather James J. Grimes of Florida; one son, Don M. Cage, daughter Dawn M. Cage and granddaughter Jessica M. Cage, all of Baltimore; two brothers, Philip "Ted" Cage and wife Sandra of LaVale, and Don "Rick" Cage and wife Michelle of Cumberland; niece Lisa Cage Cohen and husband Robert of Iceland; nephew Leonard Cage and wife Kim of Florida; aunts, Juanita Delaney of Greenbelt and Frances George of Cumberland; and cousin Gene Cramer and wife Sandra of Cumberland.
Services were held at the Loudon Park Funeral Home in Baltimore.
FLORENCE E. BROADWATER
LONACONING - Florence Elizabeth Broadwater, 77, of Red Bird Lane, Lonaconing, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at her home.
Born at Lonaconing, June 15, 1921, she was a daughter of the late David W. and Lillie Florence (Green) Weir.
Surviving are her husband, Graydon Kinsley Broadwater; two sons, David Weir and wife Patty, Lonaconing, and Kim Broadwater and wife Deborah Jean, Waterford, Mich.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was the last member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Broadwater was a member of the Westernport Church of the Brethren. She loved to watch outside birds, especially 'hummers' and red birds.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Westernport Church of the Brethren, Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ervin Huston officiating.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.
Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
Pallbearers will be Jim Weir, Philip Woods, John White, Dave Timney, Austin Green and Bob Rayner.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Sacred Heart Hospital or Memorial Hospital hospice units. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
HAZEL E. BERNARD
SWANTON - Hazel Ellen Bernard, age 88, of 309 Hunt Valley Road, Swanton, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at the Ortiz Personal Care Home, Sand Flats.
She was born June 10, 1910, at Bond, Md., and was a daughter of the late Josephus Howell and Ada (Bowers) Howell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lambert R. Bernard, in 1995; two children, Carroll E. Bernard and Delores J. Bernard. Also preceding her were five brothers, Charles L. Howell, John H. Howell, Albert F. Howell, Walter E. Howell and Cecil E. Howell; five sisters, Annie Bateman, Martha Anderson, Della Deiling, Helen E. Howell and Ethel A. Broadwater.
She was a member of the Lakeside Assembly of God Church.
She is survived by five sons, Roland C. Bernard, Canton, Ohio, Paul E. Bernard, Hagerstown, Thomas E. Bernard, Oakland, Richard L. Bernard and Harland B. Bernard, both of Swanton; three daughters, Maxine B. Steiding, Lothian, Eileen B. Kerslake, Hagerstown, and Rita Ann Kugler, Waynesboro, Pa.; two brothers, J. Elmer Howell, Cumberland, and George A. Howell, Baltimore; one sister, Leona F. Rice, also of Cumberland; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Lakeside Assembly of God Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Hartley Wigfield Jr., the Rev. Irvin G. Steiding and the Rev. Robert Culler officiating.
Interment will be in the Lohr Cemetery.
Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
The family request memorials be directed to the Lakeside Assembly of God Church.
MAXINE J. BROWN
CLEAR SPRING - Maxine J. "Maggie" Brown, 82, of 120 Cumberland St., Clear Spring, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at her home.
Born Aug. 28, 1916, in Wiley Ford, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James and Frantie Price Cross.
She was a member of the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of Clear Spring. She was a founding member and served on the board of directors of the Clear Spring Historical Society. She was an avid oil painter. She was the co-owner and operator of Brown's Lunch of Clear Spring from 1952 to 1971. She and her husband Carl purchased a log cabin in Clear Spring in 1961 and restored it to a museum which was opened to the public in 1986. She was the last former site coordinator of Clear Spring with the Commission on Aging.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Joseph Brown, in 1993.
She is survived by one daughter, Carlene E. Staley, of Clear Spring; six grandchildren, Elizabeth, James, Donald, Pamela, Wade and Krista; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, James Robert Brown; a son-in-law, Cecil N. Staley; one sister, Marcella House; and two brothers, James and Thomas Cross.
Services will be held on Monday, April 12, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, . The Rev. Elaine Prince will officiate. Burial will be held at Rose Hill cemetery of Clear Spring. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.

DOROTHY G. ABE
PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Dorothy G. Abe, 81, of Painesville, died Friday, April 9, 1999, at the Lake Hospital System.
Born Nov. 21, 1917, in Patterson's Creek, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Henry N. and Bertha V. (Brelsford) Abe. She also was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
Ms. Abe lived in Cumberland, Md., prior to moving to Painesville in 1953. She was a homemaker. She was a charter active member of the Painesville Church of the Brethren, worked many years in the nursery, and was very fond of children.
Survivors include a sister, Grace Moreland, Virginia; a brother, Robert Abe, Ridgeley, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Old Furnace Church of the Brethren, Ridgeley, on Tuesday, April 13, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jim Abe of The First Akron Church of the Brethren, Akron, Ohio, officiating.
Burial will be in the Abe Cemetery, Ridgeley.
