H. LEO CARROLL
CUMBERLAND - H. Leo Carroll, 72, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 11, 1926, in Shallmar, he was the son of R. Mildred (Wilkins) Yoders, Cumberland, and the late Frank L. Carroll.
Mr. Carroll was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific and European Theaters.
He was employed through Bricklayers Local #6, Cumberland. Recently, he had received his 50-year gold card.
Mr. Carroll was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, where he had served on the church council and property committee, was treasurer for the Fellowship Class, and past president of the Men of St. Luke's. He belonged to East Gate Lodge #216, A.F. & A.M.; 32nd Degree, KCCH, Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies, and Ali Ghan Shrine, where he belonged to the Ritualistic Unit. Mr. Carroll was one of the original organizers for Potomac Highlands DESA. He was also a member of Gold Star Post #6452 V.F.W., Ridgeley, W.Va.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Haines) Carroll; five children, R. Scott Carroll and wife, Denise, Baltimore, Cathy Keeney and husband, Mike, Baltimore, Kevin L. Carroll and wife, Sharon, Cumberland, Nancy McCormick and husband, John, Short Gap, W.Va., and Julie Kay Travers and husband, Richard, Baltimore; one brother, Donald Carroll, Bowling Green; three sisters, Hameline Hardman, Cumberland, Sylvia Hedrick, Moorefield, W.Va., and Janet Hudson, Front Royal, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
East Gate Lodge #216 A.F. & A.M. will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, where military honors will be accorded by the local Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Luke's Lutheran Church Property Committee, 1601 Frederick St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
FREDERICK BITTINGER
GRANTSVILLE - Frederick Lester Bittinger, 78, of 184 Main St., Grantsville, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born March 19, 1921, in Accident, he was a son of the late Grant and Minnie (Durst) Bittinger. He was preceded in death by his wife, F. Evelyn (Swauger) Bittinger, Dec. 3, 1993; a daughter, Bonnie Louise Bittinger; and three sisters, Nora Resh, Jeannette Lohr and Mildred Ryland.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Grantsville. Mr. Bittinger was a retired lift truck operator for Harbison-Walker Refractories after 36 years of service. He was a member of Woodmen of the World, Camp 41, and United Steelworkers Local #14404.
Survivors include a daughter, Gloria M. Beitzel and husband, Ron, Accident; three sisters, Pearl Brenneman, Salisbury, Pa., Mary Savage, Oakland, Md., Lena Sipple, Grantsville; four grandsons, Jason, Brian, Eric and Alex Beitzel; a step-grandson, Michael Swauger; and a step-granddaughter, Donna Jo Brenneman.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David E. Fetter officiating.
Interment will be in Grantsville Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Donald Ryland, Michael Swauger, Robert Bittinger, Doug Bittinger, Terry Beitzel and Charles Resh.

TERRY M. ALEXANDER
FROSTBURG - Terry M. Alexander, 54, of Frostburg, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at home.
Born Feb. 8, 1945, in Keyser, W.Va., he was the son of the late Edison Lawrence Alexander and Donna (Flick) Alexander.
Mr. Alexander was a truck driver.
Surviving are his wife, Mary A. (Walsh) Alexander; one daughter, Tina Evans and husband, Jon, Keyser; three grandchildren, Ashley Evans, Jordan Evans and LeAnn Evans; one brother, Steve Flick and wife, Sharon, Keyser.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William A. Blair officiating.
Interment will be in the Johnson Cemetery.
MILDRED N. CARSKADON
OAKLAND - Mildred Norine Carskadon, 92, of Oakland, formerly of Crellin, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born Nov. 1, 1906, in Crellin, she was a daughter of the late George L. Knotts and Margaret (Shaffer) Knotts. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd C. Carskadon, in 1986; and one son, Charles J. Carskadon.
Mrs. Carskadon was a member of the Crellin United Brethren in Christ Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Joan Fike, Oakland; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Crellin United Brethren in Christ Church on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Mudge officiating.
Interment will be in the Terra Alta Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Crellin United Brethren in Christ Church Building Fund.
ADELE E. CHAMBERS
LAVALE - Adele Ellen Chambers, 70, of Weires Ave., LaVale, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born on July 18, 1929, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas Russell and Effie Mae (Garland) Smith. She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Carl A. Stotlemyer, in 1954, and Louis N. Chambers, in 1987; and a son, Dean R. Stotlemyer, in 1996.
Mrs. Chambers was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland, and employed for many years with A&P; Food Stores.
Survivors are two sons, Dennis C. Stotlemyer, Mechanicsville, J. Brent Stotlemyer, LaVale; daughter, Lisa A. Chambers, LaVale; two sisters, Mildred F. Creek, Little Orleans, Hazel M. Himmler, Cumberland; two brothers, Russell K. Smith, Las Vegas, Nev., Donald H. Smith, Cumberland; and one grandson, Dayne C. Stotlemyer. Mrs. Chambers was guardian of two special nephews, Marvin C. Smith and Ronald T. Smith, both of Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Alfred E. Cutajar, S.J., officiating.
At the request of Mrs. Chambers, her body will be cremated and the ashes interred in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap at a later date.

RALPH C. "FRED" "HEAVY" ARNOLD SR.
FINZEL - Ralph C. "Fred" "Heavy" Arnold Sr., 56, of 337 Sampson Rock Road, Finzel, died Sunday, June 6, 1999 at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Jan. 10, 1943, in Frostburg, he was the son of Dorothy A. (Raley) and the late Charles L. Arnold. His sister, Bonnie Arnold Twigg, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Arnold was a lifetime member and acting president of Teamsters Local #453, Cumberland.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He was a member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church, Joint Council 40 and 62, National Frieght Committee, National Highway Construction Committee, National Pipeline Negotiating Commiittee, Western Maryland Trades Commiittee, and former member of the Eastern Garrett County Volunteer Fire Department, where he formerly served as Chief.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Margaret "Peggy" (Layman) Arnold; a daughter, Sherry Buffenmyer and husband, Jeffrey, Finzel; two sons, Ralph "Butch" Arnold Jr. and wife, Molly, Finzel, and Charlie Arnold, Finzel; two sisters, Robin Shaver, Finzel, and Sandra Booth, Mount Savage; three special grandchildren, Connor Arnold, Taylor Buffenmyer and Casey Arnold; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a wonderful husband and father, inspiring so many lives. May his memory live forever. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. George Aist officiating.

Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Farrady Post #24 American Legion Honor Guard.
