BILLIE B. BARKLEY
CUMBERLAND - Billie Blanche Barkley, 78, of the Allegany County Nursing Home, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at the nursing home.
Born Jan. 22, 1921, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Robert O. and Annie E. (Whitacre) Mock. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Barkley.
Mrs. Barkley was a homemaker. She was a member of the Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren, the Order of Pocahantas #64 Sioux Council, the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary Aerie #245, the Goodfellowship Club Auxiliary, the Fleet League Capital Bowling Alley, the Redman Shuffle Board, and the Team of the Fraternal Ladies Shuffle Board League.
Surviving are two daughters, Delcie A. Pendergast and husband Joseph, Cumberland, and Billie E. Bowman and husband Rick, Cumberland; one sister, Barbara A. Frost and husband Howard, Cumberland; six grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a memorial service by the Goodfellowship Club Auxiliary on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Benny R. Brakeall officiating.
Interment will be in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
Pallbearers will be Mark Fetters, Tony Fetters, Paul Fetters, Donald Fetters, Edward Frost and Dave Griekspoor.
RITA R. AUVIL
CRESAPTOWN - Rita R. (Bartlett) Auvil, 81, of Cresaptown, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born July 20, 1917, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Elmer James and Mary Minerva (Robinson) Bartlett. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Delphia R. Auvil, Nov. 23, 1998. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Auvil was a retired nursing assistant at Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, McKinley Chapter.
Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Benny R. Brakeall officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
THERESA L. BLACKBURN
WESTERNPORT - Theresa Loretta Blackburn, 99, of 1305 E. 35th St., Baltimore, formerly of Westernport, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at her residence.
Born Feb. 20, 1899, at Pekin, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Anna Lucina (Stowell) Gillespie. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Blackburn, in 1981; two daughters, Marie Lyons and Marguerite Blackburn; a brother, Edward Gillespie; and two sisters, Marguerite Gillespie and Marie Thompson.
Mrs. Blackburn was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Westernport, and a charter and life member of Victory Post 155 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Westernport.
Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Blackburn, Baltimore; two granddaughters, Sally Boyden and fiance Richard Phillips, LaVale, and Peggy Harrison and husband Jack, Westernport; five great-grandchildren, Robin Yazdani and husband Farzad, Parkland, Fla., William Frye Jr., LaVale, Penny Davis and husband Jim, Westernport, Margie Brown, Somerset, Pa., and Robert Harrison Jr., Baltimore; seven great-grandchildren, Matthew Snyder, J.T. Davis, Brandon Davis, Sarah Yazdani, Leah Yazdani, Hailey Frye and Peyton Brown.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Sunday, Jan. 31, from 3 to 5 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Westernport, on Monday, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m. with Father James Hannon as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Westernport.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Peter's School or St. Peter's Church.
CARL "RICK" BROWN
FROSTBURG - Carl "Rick" Brown, age 50, of Finzel Road, went to be with the Lord on July 4, 1999.
A loving husband and father, he was born on April 15, 1949, in Meyersdale, Pa., to the late Carl M. Brown and Mary (Deal) Brown of Finzel.
Mr. Brown was owner and operator of Brown Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, and held a Master Plumber's License for 22 years.
He was a member of Greenville Lutheran Church, The Master Plumbers Association, The National Hot Rod Association, and was an avid drag racing fan.
Surviving in addition to his mother, is his wife and best friend of 30 years, Nancy (DeWitt) Brown; one son, Richard "Rick" Brown and wife, Sharon, Zihlman; one brother, Donald Brown, Finzel; one sister, Linda Race, Frostburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Cornerstone Baptist Church, 930 Frederick St., Cumberland, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Daren L. Ritchey officiating.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be David DeWitt, Edward DeWitt, Bill Brown, Jack Fate, Mike Smith and Roger Clark.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, University of Miami, Miami, FL 33136.
DELSIE V. COMBS
LUKE - Delsie V. Combs, of the Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport, formerly of 97 Mullen Ave., Luke, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999 at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born in Grant County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Sanford B. and Nancy (Bensenhaver) Veach. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Combs, in 1975. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Combs attended Shepherd College and St. Johns Academy, and taught in the rural schools of West Virginia for a number of years. She married
Calvin Combs in 1929 and they resided in Luke all their lives. She served on the Election Board of the Town of Luke for many years, and was a member of the Westernport Church of the Brethren, where she served as Secretary of the Volunteer Bible Class, and Treasurer of Women's Fellowship. Delsie was a former member of the Westernport Senior Citizens and the Saturday Night Bowling League.
She is survived by two sons, Norman V. Combs of Ocean City, and Clyde B."Jack" Combs of Rawlings.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William Shimer officiating. Interment will be in Lahmansville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Tri-Towns Rescue Squad.
DOLENE J. ASHENFELTER
CUMBERLAND - Dolene J. (Henderson) Ashenfelter, 59, of 216 Oak St., died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Cumberland's Memorial Hospital's Hospice Unit.
Born on May 31, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Darrell C. Henderson and Bessie (Hare) Henderson. She was also preceded in death by two sister's that died at birth.
Mrs. Ashenfelter graduated from FortHill High School in 1958. She was Methodist by faith. She belonged to the Goodfellowship Club Auxiliary.
Surviving is her husband of 39 years, Ernest G. "Jerry" Ashenfelter, Sr.; three daughters, Darla K. Bradshaw and husband Herb; Karen S. Hedrick and husband Mark; Trina L. Dye and husband Roy; two sons, Michael L. Ashenfelter and wife Elizabeth; Ernest G. "Jerry" Ashenfelter, Jr. and wife Carolyn; one brother John D. Henderson and wife Clem; grandchildren, Mark and Cody Hedrick; Samantha Jo Ashenfelter, Rebecca Ashenfelter; Billy Martin II; Lartia and George Cousins, Bill and Joyce Bradshaw III; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Ashenfelter's body was donated to the University of Maryland.
Family requests that contributions be sent to Memorial Hospital's Hospice Unit.
