ERNEST BRODIE
LONACONING-Ernest Brodie, 86, of Frostburg Village Nursing Home, formerly of Railroad Street, Midland, died March 21, 1999, at the nursing home. He was a patient there since August 1994.
Born Feb. 17, 1913, in Knapps Meadow, he was a son of the late Andrew Brodie and Christina (McKinnon) Brodie, natives of Scotland. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Hildred (Kroll) Brodie, on Sept. 20, 1994. Mr. Brodie was the last of his immediate family.
Mr. Brodie was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and a retiree of Allegany County Road Department. He was of the Methodist Faith. Mr. Brodie was a member of the American Legion Post #189, Barton, and the Alvin C. Neat Post #5280, V.F.W., Lonaconing.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirley M. Fresh and husband, Bill, Frostburg; one son, Richard E. Brodie, Fort Dodge, Iowa; two grandchildren, Bryan Cosner, Frostburg, Jenifer Brodie, Plattville, Wisc.; two great-grandchildren, Brittney Cosner and Shauna Proud, both of Frostburg; and several nieces and nephews of the Krolls; one sister-in-law, Dorthea Timney; and two brothers-in-law, Lloyd Kroll and wife, Helen, and Olen Moody.
The family will receive friends at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, on Monday, March 22, 1999, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Jimmie Blair officiating.
Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lonaconing.
JAMES FRANKLIN "BUS" BROWN
OLDTOWN - James Franklin "Bus" Brown, 76, of Oldtown, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 12, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born July 20, 1922, in Springfield, W.Va., he was the son of the late Riley P. and Nancy (Iser) Brown. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Junior Brown.
Mr. Brown was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of the American Legion, Paw Paw, W.Va.
Surviving are his wife, Zella R. (Twigg) Brown; one daughter, Tina S. and husband, Ernie Lewis, Oldtown; one stepson, John R. Dean and wife, Mary, and their children, Rusty, Stacy and Jamie; three other children, Jim Brown, Florida, Bobby Brown, Cumberland, and Nancy Carder, Oldtown; one brother, Paul R. Brown and wife, Johanna, Oldtown; four grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Donna Twigg, Oldtown; and their children, Bobby and Jessie.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Merle Correll officiating.
Interment will be in Sulphur Springs Cemetery.
Military honors will be accorded by the Maryland Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
VIRGINIA D. CREEK
HANCOCK - Virginia Diane Creek, age 47, of West Main Street, Hancock, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at her home.
Born on Sept. 27, 1951, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of Edith Lucille Bishop Caldwell of Hancock; and the wife of Dr. Donald L. Creek, Hancock, whom she married
on Aug. 29, 1973, in Flintstone.
She assisted her husband in their chiropractic offices in Martinsburg, W.Va., and Hancock. She was a member of the Women's American Chiropractic Association, a trainer for the Shawnee Council of the Girl Scouts of America, Martinsburg, and a 1969 graduate of Hancock High School.
Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by one daughter, Heather Galeann Creek, Hagerstown; one sister, Christine Clark, Spartanburg, S.C.; and one brother, Stephen Eugene Caldwell Sr., Spartanburg.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, 2 E. High St., Hancock, with the Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt Jr. and Lay Associate Steven L. McCarty officiating.
The family will receive friends at St. Thomas' Parish Hall following the services on Saturday.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

HARRY 'PECKS' BEAN
FROSTBURG - Harry F. 'Pecks' Bean, 96, of Rest Assured Living Center, Meyersdale, Pa., and formerly of 66 Broadway, Frostburg, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at the residential living center.
Born Sept. 24, 1902, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Maurice and Nellie (Hershberger) Bean. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia 'Ginny' (Slingloff) Bean, in 1993.
Mr. Bean was a former department supervisor at the Celanese Fibers Corporation where he was employed for 24 years, and he was retired as a self-employed painter.
He was a member of the Frostburg Church of the Brethren, and the Big Savage Sportsman's Club.
Surviving are a daughter, Frances Benny and husband, Philip, Goldsboro, N.C.; a granddaughter, Bonita K. Davis and husband, Dale, San Antonio, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Camala Davis; and one great-grandson, Leland Davis; a brother, Charles 'Chick' Bean, Frostburg; a sister, Nellie Hawkins, Frostburg; a niece, Roxann Haupt, Frostburg; and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William Boyer officiating.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.
GARY L. APPEL SR.
CUMBERLAND - Gary Lamar Appel Sr., 60, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Devlin Manor Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 28, 1939, in Cumberland, he was the son of Leo F. and Georgie L. (McFarland) Appel, Cumberland.
He was preceded in death by a brother, George "Fred"Appel, in 1998.
Mr. Appel had driven tractor-trailers for North American Van Lines for 15 years. He was a former member of the Painters Local, was Project Superintendent for Bank Builders Inc., and more recently had been self-employed, doing home improvements.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Jean (Robertson) Appel; seven children, Nancy Plummer, Middletown, Pa., Gary L. Appel Jr., Canton, Ohio, Jeffrey Appel, Everett, Pa., Jennifer McCullough, Flourtown, Pa., Wendy Appel, Orange, Va., Lloyd Appel, Cumberland, and Cameron Appel, Canton; three brothers, John Appel, Cumberland, Harold Appel, Ridgeley, W.Va., and Leo Appel, Cumberland; four sisters, Ina Rae McGregor, Cumberland, Myrtle Gay, Jefferson, Ga., Carolyn Meagher, Cumberland, and Patricia Maddy, LaVale; and 12 grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John Divico officiating.
Interment will be in Prosperity United Methodist Church Cemetery.
RUTH V. ALDRIDGE
MOUNT SAVAGE - Ruth Virginia Aldridge 80, of Old School Road, Mount Savage, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at her residence.
Born March 22, 1919, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Anna (Wisner) Pitzer. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Howard C. "Howdy" Aldridge.
Mrs. Aldridge was a retired registered nurse having worked at Miner's Hospital, Frostburg.
Surviving are two sons, Richard L. Aldridge, Beltsville, and Gary R. Aldridge, Greenbelt; two daughters, Nancy L. Hedgelen, Clayton, Calif., and Jane E. Farrow, Richmond, Va.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Margaret "Peggy" Aldridge, Frostburg, and Dorothy Mastin, Erlanger, Ky.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted there at 9 p.m. following the visitation with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating. The body will then be cremated.
Private inurnment services will be held at a later date in the Saint George's Episcopal Cemetery, Mount Savage.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Mount Savage Volunteer Fire Company and Ambulance Rescue Squad.
