ODELL L. BEEMAN
MIDLAND - Odell Leo Beeman, 80, of 19714 O'Maras Ave., Midland, went to be with the Lord on his 80th birthday, April 28, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born April 28, 1919, at Swamp Road, Garrett County, he was a son of the late Albertus Beeman and Althea (Wiland) Beeman.
Mr. Beeman was a member of the Frostburg Church of the Brethren and the Midland Sportsmans Club, Midland.
Surviving are his wife, Viola Odessa (Layman) Beeman; five children, Patricia Ann Dixon and husband James, Frostburg, Thomas Odell Beeman and wife Mary, Midland, Richard Lee Beeman and wife Margaret, Grantsville, Carol Viola Small and husband Lewis, California, and Barbara Ellen Jenkins and husband James, Washington; 18 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Melva Reynolds, Ohio; one brother, Leroy Beeman, Lonaconing; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, Saturday, May 1, 1999, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday, May 2, 1999, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Rick Riley officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
HOWARD M. BENDER II
LAVALE - Howard Merle Bender II, age 64, of 10904 Bradour Ave., LaVale, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 1, 1935, in Flintstone, the son of the late Howard M. Bender I and Florence Diebert. He is also preceded in death by one son, Howard 'Pete' Bender; and one brother, Leonard Diebert.
Mr. Bender was Methodist by faith. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 33 years, where he retired. He was a member of Fort Cumberland Post #13 American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Police, Ohr Lodge #131, A.F. & A.M., and Scottish Rite Bodies.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Weicht) Bender; one son, William Bender, LaVale; one step-son, Larry Westfall, Cumberland; two daughters, Patricia 'Patty' Bible, Oldtown, Susie Sites, Flintstone; five step-daughters, Nancy Wolford, Frostburg, Karen Burton, Cumberland, Joyce Westfall, Frostburg, Cheryl Lindner, Cumberland, Vicky Westfall, Jenson Beach, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home, 230 Baltimore Ave., Cumberland.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Iser officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by the local Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Ohr Lodge #131 will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
EMMA F. BENNETT
FROSTBURG - Emma Filsinger Bennett, 83, of Frostburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at Memorial Hospital. She had been a resident of Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born on Jan. 12, 1916, in Eckhart Mines, she was the daughter of the late George and Estella (Porter) Filsinger. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Geatz and her second husband, Paul Bennett; and one sister, Margaret Holsinger.
Mrs. Bennett was a retired beautician. She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, Frostburg Women of the Moose, Chapter 221, Pythian Sisters of Gaithersburg, life member of American Legion Auxiliary, and the Ladies of the Elks.
Surviving are three sisters, Ruth Offutt, Frederick, Frances Filsinger Lewis, Eckhart, and Barbara Tomsic, Eckhart; one brother, George E. Filsinger, II, and wife, Joan, Lakeland, Fla.; 13 nieces and nephews, including Joey Stakem and Peggy Getty; 26 great-nieces and nephews; and 13 great-great-nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation. The body will be cremated.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Zion United Church of Christ, Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Diane Smith, officiating.
Inurnment will be in Eckhart Cemetery.

WILLIAM R. BENTON
WOODLAWN - William R. "Ray" Benton, 79, of Woodlawn, formerly of Baltimore and Cumberland, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at Maryland General Hospital.
Born Sept. 4, 1920, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles L. Benton and Lucy Pleasant (True) Benton. His family moved to Baltimore when he was a child.
Mr. Benton attended John Hopkins University in 1949 and received a B.S. in Astronomy and a B.S. in Engineering. He was employed by Martin-Marietta, Westinghouse Astronautics, Datronic Engineers, and Astro Studios as an astronomer and engineer. He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corp during World War II. In his career as a scientist, he served as an electromechanical design engineer and as a structural test engineer for the Martin-Marietta Company, as a lunar consultant for the Westinghouse Astronautics Institute, and as a geophysical consultant for Datronic Engineers. In 1960, he developed a scale model for the moon for Astro-Studios in Baltimore which received international recognition for being the most definitive model of the moon yet produced. He was an internationally known authority on selenography and selenology. His research was concerned with meteoroid and cometary studies. He taught Astronomy at Catonsville Community College. He also raised Shelties.
Mr. Benton was a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Astronautical Society, the International Lunar Society, the Maryland Academy of Sciences, and the Baltimore Astronomical Society.
Surviving are his friend, Frances Jean Kellenberger, Glen Burnie, and third cousin, the Rev. Michael Allen Mudge.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral Home, Glen Burnie, on Friday, October 22 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Allen Mudge officiating.
Interment will be at Glen Haven Memorial Park.
MARY L. BENNETT
CUMBERLAND - Mary L. Bennett, 69, of 101 E. Industrial Blvd., Cumberland, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born on June 23, 1930, at Burlington, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Arlington W. Kitzmiller and Sarah B. (Baker) Kitzmiller Leatherman. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Mae Oliver.
Mrs. Bennett was a retired waitress at the Carriage House in Washington, D.C., and Dowden's Restaurant in Furnace Acres, W.Va. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Ashby, W.Va. She also was a member of the Cumberland Eagles Club, the Cumberland Redmen Club, and the Good Fellowship Club.
Surviving are her close companion, Richard Breighner, Cumberland; two daughters, Pamela L. Wilt and husband Richard, Keyser, W.Va., and Linda G. Gilbert and fiance Kevin J. Beers Sr., and their family, Kevin and Kelsey Beers, all of Keyser; one sister, Laura J. Sions, Wiley Ford, W.Va.; and three grandchildren, Jason P. Wilt, Sabrina L. Wilt and Kevin W. Gilbert.
Friends will be received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Vernon E. Beachum officiating.
Interment will be in the Queen's Point Cemetery, Keyser.
ELLEN R. BERRY
CUMBERLAND - Ellen R. "Nellie" Berry, 96, of Cumberland Nursing Home, formerly of Fayette Street, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 3, 1902, in Rawlings, she was the daughter of the late James E. Berry Sr., and Miriam (Llewellyn) Berry. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, James E. Berry Jr., and George W. Berry; and three sisters, Phyllis Filler, Margaret Valentine and Miriam Berry.
Ms. Berry was a sales clerk for Cumberland Cloak and Suit Store. She joined Kingsley United Methodist Church on March 30, 1921. She was a 78-year member and the oldest member of the church. She was a member of the Faithful Workers Sunday School and the Kingsley United Methodist Women's Society.
Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Hilda Berry, Cumberland, and Vera Berry, Wheeling, W.Va.; nieces and nephews, Mary Lou Berry Powelson and husband Edwin, Hampstead, Frances Ann Berry Hare and husband Eugene, North Canton, Ohio, James Edward Berry III and wife Nancy, Cumberland, Michael Kenneth Berry, Hampstead, Miriam Lois Berry Heavner and husband Jeffery, McSherrystown, Penn., Deborah Marie Berry Reick and husband Charles, Baltimore, Margaret Ellen Filler Williams and husband Gary, Crystal River, Fla., George William Berry, Terre Haute, Ind., and Patricia Berry, Columbus, Ohio; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and three great-great-nieces.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at Kingsley United Methodist Church, Friday at 1:30 p.m. with the Pastor Richard H. Jewell officiating. Friends will also be received at the church one hour prior to the services.
Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery, Fort Ashby, W.Va.
The family requests donations be made to the Kingsley United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers will be James Edward Berry III, Michael Kenneth Berry, Edwin Powelson, Eugene Hare, Jeffery Heavner, Charles Reick, and Gary Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces.
