LYLE W. BENDER
OLDTOWN - Lyle Ward Bender, 55, of 17410 Oldtown Rd., Oldtown, died suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in Tyrone, Pa.
Born Dec. 23, 1943, in Cumberland, he was the son of Ruth Estella (Nixon) Bender, of Oldtown, and the late Niel Ward Bender.
Mr. Bender was owner and operator of Lyle Bender trucking, hauling for Westvaco; and a co-owner and operator of Benders Family Restaurant.
Surviving in addition to his mother, are wife, Shirley R. (Gall) Bender; two sons, Bryan W. Bender and wife, Tammy, and Kevin S. Bender and wife, Michele, both of Oldtown; a granddaughter, Tabitha Lynn Bender; three sisters, Beverly Thomas, Cumberland, Sandra Smith, Oldtown, Karen Duckworth and husband, Bill, Spring Gap.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Henning, officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
FRANCES V. BITTNER
FROSTBURG - Frances V. Bittner, 84, of Frostburg, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 3, 1915, in Westernport, she was the daughter of the late William F. Twigg and Edith (Brinkman) Twigg. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Nevin D. Bittner; two sisters, Pauline Suder and Mary Louise Capel; and one brother, Howard Junior Twigg.
Mrs. Bittner was employed by the Celanese Corp. and the Michael Berkowitz Shirt Factory. She was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ.
Surviving are one son, Nevin C. Bittner and wife Marlene, Zihlman; one daughter, Donna Jean Bittner and husband Karl Bittner, Frostburg; six grandchildren, Nevin J. Bittner and wife Debbie, Zihlman, Janet Benish and husband John, Owings, Md., David E. Bittner, Zihlman, Mark A. Bittner and wife Debbie, LaVale, Dwayne K. Bittner and wife Pamela, Frostburg, and Lori A. Miller and husband James, Frostburg; 10 great-grandchildren, Nevin R. Bittner, Winchester, Va., Daniel L. Bittner, Zihlman, Julie Benish, John Benish and Jacob Benish of Owings, Md., Sarah M. Bittner, Jeremy W. Bittner, Tyler J. Miller, Kelsey Dawn Miller and Kendra Marie Miller, all of Frostburg; one brother, William O. Twigg, Frostburg; and two sisters, Arvella Cochran, Frostburg, and Marie Conrad, Huntsville, W.Va.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St. Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Lawrence A. Neumark officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mark Bittner, Dwayne Bittner, Nevin Bittner, David Bittner, Daniel Bittner and James Miller.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Salem United Church of Christ or Welsh Memorial Baptist Church.
DARIUS S. BITTINGER
GRANTSVILLE - Darius S. Bittinger, 90, of 2847 Foxtown Road, Grantsville, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at the home of his daughter in Grantsville.
Born Nov. 11, 1909, in Garrett County, he was the son of the late Silas and Mary Maude (Miller) Bittinger. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Frances (Merriner) Bittinger on Oct. 3, 1980; three brothers; and four sisters.
Mr. Bittinger was a member of the Laughlin Church of the Brethren, the Grantsville Senior Citizens, and was a retired foreman for Sam E. Barnett Metal Company, Akron, Ohio.
Surviving are five sons, David L. Bittinger, Uniontown, Ohio, Paul D. Bittinger and Leonard E. Bittinger, both of Akron, Ohio, Lloyd E. Bittinger, Mogadore, Ohio, and Stanley R. Bittinger, Cadiz, Ohio; four daughters, Mary Gemberling, Ravenna, Ohio, Lois Carter, Akron, Ohio, Grace Lopez, Deerfield, Ohio, and Sarah Broom, Grantsville; two brothers, Theodore Bittinger, Grantsville, and Sherman Bittinger, Akron; two sisters, Alma Clegg and Ellen Molnar, both of Barberton, Ohio; 31 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Monday at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Ross Glotfelty officiating.
Interment will be in the Grantsville Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to either the Hospice of Garrett County or the Northern Garrett County Rescue Squad.
During his last days, Darius told his daughter and granddaughter that his greatest wish is that there is love in the family and that "he wants to see every one of us in heaven." He loved his family very much and his wisdom, integrity and loving kindness will be remembered in the hearts of all who knew him, forever.
EDNA M. BITTINGER
OAKLAND - Edna M. (Friend) Bittinger, 90, of Garrett Highway, Oakland, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital.
Born May 5, 1908, in Swallow Falls, she was the daughter of the late Edmond and Catherine (Knox) Friend. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie J. Bittinger, in 1983; and one son, Melvin Bittinger. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Bittinger was a member of the Glendale Assembly of God Church and attended the Spring Glade Adult Day Care.
Surviving are two daughters, Alice Gaither, Oakland, and Genevieve Bittinger, Crellin; two sons, Selby Bittinger, Swanton, and Edmond Bittinger, Oakland; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Glendale Assembly of God Church on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Gail Hixon and the Rev. Ivan Ackerman officiating.
Interment will be in the Bittinger Cemetery.
ELLSWORTH A. BROADWATER
SWANTON - Ellsworth A. Broadwater, 83, of the Frostburg Village Nursing Home, formerly of Spring Lick Road, Swanton, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Feb. 6, 1915, at Grantsville, he was a son of the late Nelson E. and Ada (Chaney) Broadwater. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mamie H. Broadwater, on Oct. 24, 1998.
Mr. Broadwater was a farmer and retired from Wood Products, Oakland. He attended Dunkard Brethren Church, Broadwater Chapel, Savage River Road.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Sunday, Jan. 24, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted there on Monday, Jan. 25, at 1:30 p.m. by Elder Ray Stuber and Elder Merle Sweitzer.
Interment will be in the Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
MELVIN W. BITTINGER
HANCOCK - Melvin William Bittinger, age 62, of Baptist Road, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at his home.
Born Dec. 13, 1936, in Lonaconing, he is the son of Raymond W. Bittinger, Hancock, and the late Stella Marie Cutter Bittinger, who died in 1986. His wife, Donna Marie Ash Bittinger, died in 1985.
He retired in 1986 from the Western Maryland Regional Laboratory in Hancock as Assistant Regional Materials Engineer. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1483, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and a member of the Hancock Church of God, Hancock.
Besides his father he is survived by one daughter, Donna L. Powell, Berkeley Springs; one son, Melvin E. Bittinger, Deal Island, Md.; three brothers, Raymond W. Bittinger Jr., Cumberland, Md., John C. Bittinger and Paul D. Bittinger, both of Hancock; a number of nieces and nephews; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. Also surviving is one aunt, Lula Brown, Hancock. He was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Jessica Ann Powell, in 1996.
Services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock.
Burial will be in the Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, Md.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
