Mary Ann Crandell
ROSEDALE - Mary Ann Crandell, 79, of Wingate passed away on Friday, Oct. 15, 2004 at her son's home in Rosedale. She was born on Dec. 9, 1924 in Wingate and was the daughter of the late Thomas and Archie Jones Powley.
Mrs. Crandell attended school in Wingate. On July 20, 1941 she married James M. Crandell Sr. who passed away on Jan. 29, 1994. She had worked for Baltimore City as a microfilm tech, American Oil Company as a clerk and as a beautician.
Mrs. Crandell is survived by two sons, Wayne P. Crandell and his wife Irene of Essex, and James M. Crandell Jr. and his wife Ann of Rosedale; five grandsons, Vincent J. Crandell, Bruce W.E. Crandell, Brian K. Crandell, James M. Crandell III and Mark D. Crandell; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Roberta Jones and Ruby Bloodsworth both of Cambridge; a brother, Reginald Powley of Wingate; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery near Hurlock with the Rev. C. Bruce Revel officiating. A visitation will be today from 6-8 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge. Memorial contributions can be made to Lakes & Straits Volunteer Fire Company, 2103 Farm Creek Road, Wingate, MD 21675.
Mary S. Ewell
CAMBRIDGE - Mary Standing Ewell, 95, who owned Mary Ewell's Town and Country Clothes in downtown Cambridge for 31 years, died at Chesapeake Woods Center on Saturday Oct. 16, 2004 with family members present, after failing health.
Mrs. Ewell was born Dec. 22, 1908 in Norfolk, Va., the daughter of the late James John Standing and Marie Strobel Standing.
Mrs. Ewell, a native of Norfolk, attended Saint Mary's Catholic School. She also spent her summers in Cape Henry Va. In 1924, Mrs. Ewell moved to New York City were she worked as a hostess in Schraff's Restaurant and later managed the Cafe in Bloomingdale's before opening her own restaurant in Manhattan.
On Sept. 7, 1937, she married Thomas Jefferson Ewell of Dorchester County. They lived in New York City. The couple also lived in St. Augustine, Fla., Coconut Grove, Fla. and Cleveland, Ohio before moving to Church Creek in 1946.
Upon moving to Dorchester County, Mrs. Ewell worked at Carton's Department Store prior to opening Mary Ewell's Town and Country Clothes on Gay Street. As the owner, Mrs. Ewell traveled to New York City to bring the latest fashions to Cambridge, often selecting outfits with a particular customer in mind. Many Cambridge residents fondly remember a trip to Mary's shop to select a dress for a special occasion.
She was a communicant of Saint Mary's Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church in Cambridge.
Mrs. Ewell was a member of The Cambridge Yacht Club, The Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, The Dorchester Historical Society, The Eastern Shore Hospital Center Auxiliary, The Grace Church Foundation, The Dorchester County Arts Society and The Spocott Windmill Foundation.
Survivors include her grandchildren, William F. Hubbard III and his wife Susan Ritchie of Amber, Pa., Jefferson Ewell Hubbard and his wife Debbie of Cambridge, Lisa A. Hubbard and her husband Donald Hresko of Bowie, Laurie Taylor Clark and her husband Stephen Clark of Wilmington, Del.; great-grandchildren Matthew W. Hubbard, Donald W. Hresko, Carly M. Hresko, Brian M. Hresko, Tyler G. Clark and Melanie E. Clark.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jefferson Ewell on Dec. 4, 1984, her brother James J. Standing and her daughters Dorothy Ewell (Jinx) Hubbard and Mary Elizabeth (Nikki Ewell) Taylor.
There will be a Mass of Christian burial held at Saint Mary's Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church, 1515 Glasgow St., Cambridge on Wednesday at noon. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Mass at church. Burial will follow at Old Trinity Church in Church Creek.

Arthur E. Sanger
CENTREVILLE - Arthur E. Sanger, of Cambridge, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004 at Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville. He was the husband of the late Blanche L. Warfield Sanger, who died in 1999.
Surviving are four children, Debbie Sanger, Jessie Sanger and Bobby Sanger all of Delaware and Chucky Sanger of Cambridge; a step-daughter, Rena Tuttle and her husband John "Chip" of Centreville.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with The Rev. Dave Bringman officiating. Burial will follow at East New Market Cemetery.
Robert M. Dingle
EASTON - Robert M. Dingle of Cambridge died at Memorial Hospital in Easton on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004. He was 48.
Born in Baltimore on July 28, 1956, he was raised by his grandparents David and Queen Thacker in Louisa, Va. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church in East New Market.
Memorial services will be held at Mount Zion United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Nov. 7. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending memorial donations to DPIC, c/o Mt. Zion UMC, 4111 East New Market-Rhodesdale Road, East New Market, MD 21631.
Norma L. Atkins
MARDELA SPRINGS - Norma Lee Atkins of Mardela Springs passed away on Friday, Oct. 1, 2004. She was 57.
She was born on July 16, 1946, the daughter of the late William T. Mitchell and Laura Mildred Boston Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Lee Atkins.
She is survived by one aunt and several cousins.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Mardela Cemetery. Arrangements are by Framptom Funeral Home.
Arthur H. Mister
STUART, Fla. - Arthur H. Mister, 96 of Port St. Lucie, Fla., passed away on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004 at the Hospice House at Stuart, Fla. He was born in Wingate on Feb. 24, 1908 and was a son of the late William and Sadie Foxwell Mister.
He grew up and spent his youth in Crapo. He moved to Baltimore at an early age and graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. He furthered his education at Johns Hopkins University. He worked for the Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. for 10 years.
Mr. Mister worked as a civil engineer for the U.S. Army in Antigua and several other islands from 1942 until 1947. He married the former Margaret Price on Dec. 11, 1944.
She passed away on Sept. 23, 2003. Upon returning to the United States, Mr. Mister worked for the government at the United States Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C. at the Anacostia Naval Research Lab where he and his wife made their home.
After he retired, he and his wife became residents of Cambridge and traveled extensively. For a number of years, they spent their winters in Florida until becoming permanent residents there.
He was an active member of Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge, as well as the First United Methodist Church in Port St. Lucie. He was a member of Centennial Lodge 174 A.F.&A.M. in Upper Marlboro; Cambridge Lodge 66 A.F.&A.M., and the Scottish Rite in Washington, D.C.
Survivors include a sister, Maysie C. Mister Todd of Cambridge; two nephews, P. Wayne Todd and his wife Janet Todd of Cambridge, W. Arthur Todd and his wife Carolyn of Cambridge; two nieces, Phyllis C. Todd Cook and her husband Henry Cook of Hurlock and Barbara Stafford of Fredericksburg, Va.; a brother-in-law, Clarence Booze of Kent Island; and several great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Emmett Andrews; three sisters, Myrtle Andrews, Jesse A. Kennard and Elsie A. Booze; a niece, Dr. June Kennard, and two brothers-in-law, Ralph Price and Martin Kennard.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge, with the Rev. Kevin E. English and the Rev. John A. Irwin officiating. Members of Cambridge Lodge 66 A.F&A.M. will conduct a Masonic Memorial Service immediately preceding the service.
Burial will follow at Lorraine Cemetery in Baltimore. Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust St., Cambridge, MD 21613 or the Ebenezer United Methodist Church c/o Mrs. Lisa Morris, 2115 Linen Road, Church Creek, MD 21622.

William A. Armstrong
BALTIMORE - William Albert Armstrong (Pot Hooks) 87, died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on Friday, Oct. 8, 2004.
He was born on Taylors Island on March 10, 1917, the son of the late Hooper Armstrong and Maggie Cornish. He grew up on Taylors Island and attended the Taylors Island School.
On May 24, 1940, Mr. Armstrong married the late Hilda Marie Stanley. In 1941, they move to Baltimore to make their home. They had two daughters and a son.
The family soon expanded to include nephew Anthony who was raised as a son, and a foster daughter Gloria, who at the age of 15 became a permanent member of the family.
As a young man, Mr. Armstrong accepted Christ as his personal Savior at the Lanes Methodist Episcopal Church on Taylors Island. His Christian experience continued there until he and his wife moved to Baltimore.
In Baltimore, he joined other family and became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He served as a church trustee under the leadership of the Rev. Allen and otherwise pitched in to help wherever he was needed.
Before his health started to fail, Mr. Armstrong was a member of the R.L. Ball Chorus and was often featured as the lead baritone on "Everlasting Life," one of his favorite hymns of praise.
He was an active, dedicated and faithful member of his church for more than 40 years. For Mr. Armstrong, his call to be a steward of the church and a participant in the ministry of music were a source of immense gratification.
During his lifetime, he worked at several occupations. He drove a taxicab shortly after arriving in Baltimore and following that, he worked at the Sparrows Point Ship Yard and Canton Railroad. His last employment was with the state of Maryland, from which he retired at the age of 62 with more than 20 years of service.
Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by his wife Hilda after more than 62 years of marriage. Following the death of his wife, his daughter Gertude cared for him.
Mr. Armstrong is survived by his children, Gertude Mortis, William A. Armstrong Jr. (Diane), Marlene Rhock (Hillary), Anthony L. Tilghman (Sylvia) and Gloria B. Washington (Raymond); two sisters, Julia Cornish (Irving) of Taylors Island and Ida Coakley of Neptune, N.J; grandchildren Raymond, Marlon (Barbette), Sharon (Gary), Arnell (Elaine), JoAnn, Rodney, LaShonda and Gary (Shaharra); 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Naomi Tilghman.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Lanes United Methodist Church on Taylors Island. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

James E. Roberts Sr.
THOMPSONTOWN - James Everett Roberts Sr., 66, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury.
Born April 8, 1938 in Salem, he was the son of the late William Henry and Flossie Jones Roberts Davis.
Mr. Roberts attended the East New Market Elementary School and the Mace's Lane High School in Cambridge.
His work experience of several jobs included the Johns Wright Cannery, Kerr McKee Chemical Corp., S.L. Webster and Sons, Inc. where he worked as a sandblaster and painter.
Jimmy, as he was called, was a member of the Lighthouse Church of God in East New Market. His servant ship included: Senior Deacon, President of the Men's Fellowship, Finance Committee, Environmental Specialist and President of the Usher Board.
Surviving besides his wife, Minister Shirley C. Roberts, to whom he was married on Jan. 4, 1959 is a sister, Virginia Peterson (Elder Alvin), Elwood; mother in-law, Frances C. Gilbert (Cambridge); daughters, Marcia Banks (Middleton, Del.), Patricia Roberts and Rosalynn R. Baker (Brian), all of Salisbury, the Rev. Lavone R. Chester (Rev. Lemuel), Cambridge; sons, James E. Roberts Jr. (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Timothy Roberts (Thompsontown); 14 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. He also helped to raise two of his nieces, Velma Jones Ross (Douglas), Geneva Jones Elliott (Harvey), all of Sharptown. Mr. Roberts is also survived by a special cousin, Doris Cain; two goddaughters, Tamara Keaton (Smyrna, Del.) and Tim'Myia Spence (Germany); his special "heart children," Gale Killette (Gwendolyn), Hurlock, Phillip Elliott (Hurlock), Antone Phillips (Seaford, Del.), Regina Mister and Christopher Mister (both of Cambridge); five sisters-in-law, Ruby Ann Roberts (Cambridge), Andrea Mister (Baltimore), Debra Estreet (Pikesville), Lenora Mister (Cambridge), and Sandara Moore (Frederick Jr.), both of Randallstown; two brothers-in-law, Ronald Mister and Sylvester Mister (Carleen), all of Baltimore; also a friend of the family, Michael R. Foster (Salisbury) and a former son in-law, Robert R. Banks (Harrington, Del.); many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents and early siblings, Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Roxann Roberts; a grandson, Antwine Smith; a sister, Inez Jones, and two brothers, Phillip and Clayton M. Roberts and a nephew he helped to raise the late Richard Jones (Seaford, Del.).
Homegoing services will held at noon on Saturday at Refuge Temple Church Of God with the the Rev. Calvin D. Abbott, officiating. Burial will follow in the Thompsontown Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6-9 p.m. at Lighthouse Church Of God in East New Market.
