JOHN G. BRINKER
John Gerard Brinker, chiropractor, died Thursday, May 13, at his home in Great Barrington, Mass.
Born March 12, 1920, a son of John Casper and Mary Adele (Foley) Brinker, he attended St. Mary's School and LaSalle Institute. He was a 1949 graduate of Logan Basic College of Chiropractic in Saint Louis, Mo.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 33 Infantry in the Asiatic-Pacific theater and was discharged in 1945.
He established a practice in Great Barrington in 1950. In 1955, he moved to Millerton, New York, where he practiced for 42 years before retiring in 1997.
He was charter president of the Great Barrington Lions Club, and past commander of the American Legion Post 179 of Millerton. He was a longtime member of the Millerton Planning Board and a noted amateur artist.
He is survived by his wife, Helene Fillipetti; a son, William M. Brinker of Great Barrington; a son, Richard Brinker of Boston, Mass.; a brother, Raymond R. Brinker, chiropractor of Houston, Texas; six sisters, Rita Brinker of Cumberland, Md., Eileen Steele of Frostburg, Md., Adele Whipple of New Brighton, Pa., Catherine Arenholz of Albuquerque, N.M., Dorothy Pacella of Bridgeville, Pa., and Sister Patricia Ann Brinker, Mission Helper of the Sacred Heart, Baltimore, Md.; four granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.
HELEN M. BYER
CUMBERLAND - Helen M. Byer died Jan. 27, 1999.
She was born May 4, 1917, at Durbin, W.Va., the daughter of the late Meade and Viola Wimer. Her husband, R. Stanton Byer, died in 1962.
Mrs. Byer was employed for many years at Rosenbaum Brothers. Later she worked for Eyerly's Bon Ton until retiring.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Ann (Byer) Hathaway, Las Vegas, Nev.; a grandson, Michael Stanton Lyden, Cumberland; a sister, Ruth Ann Hiner, Virginia; two great-grandsons, Joey and Joshua Lyden, Cresaptown; a niece, Rita Schoenadel, Cumberland.
One sister, Margaret Wiant, preceded her in death.
There will be no visitation or services. As she wished, her body was donated to the Anatomy Board of Research.
MARY M. COSGROVE
CUMBERLAND - Mary Marcellane Cosgrove, 80, of Booth Towers, formerly of Valley Road, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at her home.
Born Nov. 5, 1918, in Westernport, Md., she was the daughter of the late Patrick Fahey and the late Mayme Fahey. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Michael E. Cosgrove, in 1975; and a son, Michael Cosgrove.
Mrs. Cosgrove was formerly employed at Harvey's Jewelry Store and was a retired secretary from Sylvan Retreat. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and a member of LaSalle Mothers Club.
Surviving are two sons, James T. Cosgrove Sr. and wife Judy, Cumberland, Md., and Francis Joseph Cosgrove and wife Helen, Keyser, W.Va.; a daughter, Mary Ann Whaley and husband Barry, Waldorf, Md.; a brother, Thomas Fahey, Westernport, Md.; four grandchildren, Kenneth Whaley, Florida, Erin Whaley, Waldorf, Md., James T. Cosgrove Jr., D.V.M., and wife Brigette Cosgrove, D.V.M., Cumberland, and Michele Faye Cosgrove, Cumberland; and two great-grandchildren, James D. Cosgrove and Kylie Nicol Cosgrove.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Wake Service will be conducted Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. with Deacon Frank Werner officiating.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Wednesday at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Cumberland, Md.
THEODORE R. BUTTS
OAKLAND - Theodore R. 'John' Butts, 79, of Oakland, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born April 21, 1920, in Gorman, he was a son of the late Roy J. Butts and Daisy (Vann) Butts. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille (Lantz) Butts, in October 1998.
Mr. Butts was a 1937 graduate of Bayard High School. He was U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired coal miner.
Surviving are two brothers, Alden C. Butts, Madison, Ohio, and John T. Butts, Gormania, W.Va.; three sisters, Ada M. Boigegrain, Akron, Ohio, Viola B. Knotts, Gormania, and Frances L. Cosner, Bayard, W.Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William Anderson officiating.
Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be accorded at graveside by members of local veterans organizations.
EVELYN C. BUSINSKY
LONACONING - Evelyn C. "Mickie" Businsky, 88, of 15712 Rockville, St., Lonaconing, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Jan. 28, 1911, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late Jacob C. and Priscilla (Powell) Click. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John C. Businsky; and one brother, Jacob H. Click.
Mrs. Businsky was a member of the first United Methodist Church, Lonaconing, for 70 years. She was a 1929 graduate of Central High School, Lonaconing, and a 1931 graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, as a Registered Nurse. She was a life member of the University of Maryland Alumni Association.
Surviving are two sisters, Rosalie C. Shobe, Cumberland, Verna C. Howell, Lonaconing; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, Lonaconing, Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Mortimore, officiating.
Interment will be at Frostburg Memorial Park.
JOY E. BUSER
OAKLAND - Joy E. (Flora) Buser, 69, of Devlin Manor Nursing Home, formerly of Garrett County, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Oct. 13, 1929, she was the daughter of the late James Flora and Oda (Harper) Hughes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Hanson Buser, in 1988.
She graduated from Allegany High School in 1947, and was a homemaker. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Mountain Lake Park.
She is survived by two sons, William James Buser and wife, Brenda, Swanton, with whom she resided for four years, and Merle Franklin Buser and wife, Sally, Cumberland; one daughter, Christina Raines and husband, William, Pasadena; six grandchildren, Amy Buser, Aaron Buser, Megan Raines, Adam Raines, Brandon Buser and Garrett Buser; two great-grandchildren, Brady Donaldson and Will Fredlock V; and several nieces and nephews.
At her request her body was donated to the Anatomy Board of Maryland. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 10, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, Mountain Lake Park, with the Rev. Mark Hickman officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Southern Rescue Squad, Oakland, MD.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, W.Va.
PAUL M. CATHERMAN
HAGERSTOWN - Paul M. Catherman, 74, of Hagerstown, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at his home in Sebastian, Fla.
Born July 18, 1925, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Paul M. and Frances D. Shope Catherman. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gussie Miller and Alma Weller; three brothers, Clair Catherman, Merlin Catherman, and Lindy Catherman; and three grandchildren.
He was last employed by Dewberry and Davis Engineering Co., Washington, D.C., as a consultant engineer. Prior to that he had retired from Maryland State Highway Administration as a highway engineer 4. He was also a certified watchmaker, restoring old American watches.
He was retired from the Navy and Naval Reserve as a chief warrant officer after more than 42 years of service. He served in the Pacific during World War II, and in the Korean War.
He was a lifetime member of Church of Christ, in Cumberland and Hagerstown.
He was a genealogist for C/Katherman Reunion Association and had published two family genealogy books.
He is survived by his wife, Gean Steele Catherman; one daughter, Paulette Teich, of Bensalem, Pa.; two sons, Mark Catherman, of Hagerstown, and Tim Catherman, of Chesterfield, Va.; two sisters, Esther Kinsley and Beulah Jenkins, both of Frostburg; one brother, Floyd Catherman, of Frostburg; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation was held at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home, Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard McGough, officiating.
Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
