DAVID M. MARPLE
David Minter Marple, 89, Deep Creek Lake, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Sept. 20, 1910, in Buckhannon, W.Va., he was a son of the late John M. and Daisy (Reese) Marple. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Marple.
He was retired from the C&A Gas Co., where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was a charter member of the Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Company; a charter member of the Deep Creek Lions Club; and a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. He was a past board member of the Deep Creek Garrett County Promotion Council, and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Grace L. Marple; one son, John D. Marple; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted on Monday, March 20, with the Rev. Ann Harrison officiating. Interment was in the Addison (Pa.) Cemetery.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department or the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad.
HAZEL N. WINTERS
Hazel N. Winters, 95, Mountain Lake Park, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born Sept. 20, 1904, in Accident, she was the daughter of the late John and Martha Fresh. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bliss Winters, in 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Louise Biser and Peggy Lou Haines, both of Oakland; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grand-children.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted at the Oak Park Church of the Brethren on Monday, March 20, with the Rev. Mel Menker officiating. Interment was in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad.
MELVIN JOHNSON
Melvin Johnson, 68, Keyser, W.Va., died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at his residence.
Born July 28, 1931, in Bloomington, he was a son of the late Dale S. and Agnes (Rae) Johnson. He also was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
He was retired from the Potomac Valley Transit, and also had been employed at the McIntyre's Bakery. He also sold insurance for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He was drafted as an airplane mechanic for the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Westernport Victory Post #155 American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Alfretta (Michaels) Johnson; one son, Jerry Wayne, of Titusville, Fla.; one daughter, Diane, of Keyser; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles L. Johnson, Grantsville.
Friends were received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, where a funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, March 22, with the Rev. Jerry Schole officiating. Interment was in Potomac Memorial Gardens. Military honors were accorded at the graveside by the combined veterans organizations.

SARAH P. SHANHOLTZ
Sarah Priscilla Shanholtz, 95, Cumberland, formerly of Bowling Green, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, in Cumberland.
She was born May 17, 1904, in Garrett County, on the family farm on Long Stretch. Her parents were the late C. Arthur and Corlista (Grogham) Murphy. She also was preceded in death by her husband, William Harrison Shanholtz; an infant daughter, Gyneth Ann Shanholtz; and seven of her brothers, William, Sam, John, Charlie, Paul, Seth and Clarence.
She studied bookkeeping and accounting at Catherman's Business School and later worked for the Celanese Corporation in the Physical Analysis Lab. She was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church for 59 years, where she taught Sunday school, the Faithful Workers Class, and the United Methodist Women. She was active in the Bowling Green Homemakers Club, serving as president for several terms. She also worked as an election judge at the Bowling Green voting precinct.
Surviving are one daughter, Janet Brennan, McLean, Va.; one granddaughter; and one brother, George Murphy, Zilhman.
Friends were received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, Cumberland. Services were conducted at the Kingsley United Methodist Church, Cumberland, on Wednesday, March 22, with the Rev. Richard Jewell officiating.
Interment was in the family plot in the Mount Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, Long Stretch.

ARNOLD D. SISLER
Arnold D. Sisler, 85, Oakland, died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born May 27, 1914, he was the son of the late John and Clara E. (Fike) Sisler. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Hazel M. (Rumer) Sisler.
He was a retired stonemason and electrician, working for the DelSignore Lumber Company. He was also a retired coal miner.
Surviving are four daughters, Edna Winstead and Catherine Teter, both of Oakland, Darla Moats, Aurora, W.Va., and Carolyn Sisler, Mt. Storm, W.Va.; two sons, Boyd R. Sisler, Oakland, and Gary D. Sisler, Mt. Storm; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grand-children.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 23, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, March 25, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. David Moon officiating. Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
DESSIE M. PATTISON
Dessie Moorehead Pattison, 89, Bloomington, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport, where she had been a resident.
Born April 24, 1910, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of the late David and Mary (Barnard) Bever. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Carroll Moorehead, in 1988; a grandson; and a brother, Lewis Bever.
She was a homemaker. She attended Bloomington United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Daughters of America, the Bloomington Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, and the Bloomington Senior Citizens.
Surviving are her husband, Charles "Bub" Pattison; a daughter, Janet Smith, of Biloxi, Miss.; a step-daughter, Sharon Pattison, Bloomington; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family received friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, where a service was conducted on Wednesday, March 15, with the Rev. Donald Nelson officiating. Interment was in Garrett Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
ETHELL L. WHETSELL
Ethell L. Whetsell, 90, Keyser, W.Va., died on Sunday, March 12, 2000, at her residence.
Born on Nov. 16, 1909, in Garrett County, Md., she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Abernathy) Wilt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Curtis A. Whetsell, on June 28, 1972, and two grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Keyser.
Surviving are two sons, Curtis F. Whetsell,Keyser, and Leroy C. Whetsell, Manassas, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Friends were received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, where a service was conducted on Wednesday, March 15, with the Rev. Samuel E. Starling Jr. officiating. Interment was in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
ARTIE M. GEORGE
Artie Marie George, 89, of Accident, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home in Grantsville.
Born Oct. 23, 1910, near Accident, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Lydia Ellen (Fresh) Bowser. She also was preceded in death by three husbands, Walter Burkhart, Elmer Burkhart, and Edward H. George.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the adult choir, the Ladies Aid and a Sunday school teacher for many years.
Surviving are one stepson, Edward George, Tampa, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Ruth Masengill, Murrysville, Pa., Mildred Glass, Frostburg, and Judy Ragan, Frills Corner, Pa.; one brother, Raymond Bowser, Accident, and several step-grand-children and step-great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, McHenry. A service was conducted at the Zion Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Wilfred Karsten officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

MARY SHALUTA
Mary Shaluta, 96, of Oakland, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas, W.Va.
Born Dec. 3, 1903, in Lithuania, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Povish and Pauline (Stolgitis) Povish. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Shaluta, in 1969; one daughter, Victoria Harsh; and one granddaughter.
Surviving are one son, Sam H. Shaluta, Red House; one daughter, Helen Wilson, Mannington, W.Va.; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where services were conducted on Monday, March 13, with the Rev. Father Lino Ebejer officiating. Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.

LULA B. BROWN
Lula Belle Brown, 87, Hancock, formerly of Grantsville, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Dec. 27, 1912, in Jennings, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth (Hoover) Bittinger. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur P. Brown.
She was a purchasing agent for Montgomery Ward, Baltimore. She was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ, Senior Citizens, the Grantsville Firemen's Auxiliary, and the Hancock Lioness Club.
Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted earlier today, March 16, with the Rev. George R. Loar officiating. Interment was in the Salisbury (Pa.) Cemetery.
RICHARD W. ROMESBURG
Richard W. "Bud" Romesburg, 74, Oakland, formerly of Baltimore, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born Dec. 3, 1925, he was a son of the late Ralph M. Romesburg Sr. and Grace M. (Bowman) Romesburg. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph M. Romesburg Jr. and Darvin Romesburg.
He was a retired boilermaker for the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Sparrow's Point.
Survivors include his wife, Betty E. (Johnson) Romesburg; one daughter, Gloria Jean Romesburg, Baltimore; one son, Ronald L. Romesburg, Oakland; three sisters, Betty Jean Reckart, Bruceton Mills, W.Va., Mildred Skipper, Deer Park, and Barbara A. Uphold, Oakland; and one granddaughter.
