BEATRICE M. DAVIS
BRADENTON, Fla. - Beatrice M. Davis, 98, recently of Golden Pond Retirement Residence in Bradenton, died on Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at the Blake Medical Center in Bradenton.
Born in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, she was the daughter of the late William Dennis and Mary Anne White Dennis.
Her husband, Arthur S. Davis Sr., and son, Dr. Thomas E. Davis, preceded her in death.
She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Bradenton, and was previously a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church, Hagerstown, Md., and the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Cumberland, Md., where she served as secretary for a number of years.
She is survived by one son,, Arthur S. Davis Jr., Bradenton; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. Dr. Victor Zuck will officiate.
There will be no viewing.
Arrangements are being handled by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.
HOMER J. FRIEND
MCHENRY - Homer J. Friend, 76, of 50 Kate's Mountain Road, McHenry, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born Jan. 22, 1923, in Palmer, Pa., he was a son of the late Wesley and Maude (Friend) Friend.
Mr. Friend was a retired engineer for the B&O; Railroad and was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Division 50. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Among his decorations are the Bronze Star, American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and Distinguished Unit Badge. He was a former member of the VFW and attended the Open Door Chapel, Sang Run.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Fern (Slonecker) Friend, Connellsville, Pa.; two sons, Larry J. Friend, Connellsville, Daniel R. Friend, Scottdale, Pa.; three daughters, Sandra L. Friend, McHenry, Marianne Smiley and Dorothy K. McKinney, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Arnold Friend, McHenry, and Glen Friend, Oakland; a sister, Ruth Spiker, McHenry; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., McHenry, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Sang Run Christian Center on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Joseph Spiker officiating.
Interment will be in the Sang Run Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by area veterans service organizations.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the Hospice of Garrett County.
ELIZABETH S. DAVIS
CUMBERLAND - Elizabeth S. Davis, 89, of Bel Air, Cumberland, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999 at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born June 18, 1910 in Albuquerque, N.M., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Katherine (Odor) Schuller, of El Paso, Texas.
She also was preceded in death by her husband, Major Francis A. Davis, and her son, Geoffery Davis, of Houston; one brother, Fred J. Schuller, of Fabens, Texas; and one sister, Louise Pap, of Denver.
Mrs. Davis was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, where she belonged to the Ladies Club; Catholic Daughters of America; Women's Civic Club of Cumberland, Women's Sport Club; long time volunteer at Sacred Heart Hospital and member of the Auxiliary Board; Cresaptown Senior Citizens; AARP and AARP Bowling League.
Survivors include one sister, Kathryn A. Brown, with whom she resided; one brother, Harry Schuller, Sun City, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church cemetery Monday, Aug. 16, 1999 with the Rev. Reginald Russo, OFM, Cap, officiating.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
FRANCIS X. FARRELL
MCLEAN, Va. - Francis X. Farrell, formerly of Mount Savage, Md., and Cumberland, Md., succumbed on Friday, May 7, 1999, after a sudden massive heart attack at the age of 79.
The son of the late Rosella and John D. Farrell of Mount Savage, Mr. Farrell resided in McLean in Northern Virginia for most of his life, working for the federal government after discharge from the 78th Army Infantry Division after World War II.
The husband of Trieste V. Bibbiani of Chester, Conn., who died in 1978, Mr. Farrell is survived by his four children, Judith Ann Bechtol, John Andrew Farrell, Kathleen Marie Hershner and James Gregory Farrell; brother of James Farrell, Midland, Md., and Jeanette Kirby, Port Republic, Md. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; as well as 35 nephews and nieces, mainly from the Cumberland area.
Mr. Farrell was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
Friends may call at the Murphy Funeral Home of Arlington, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Va., on Tuesday, May 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where the Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John's Catholic Church, 6420 Linway Terrace, McLean, Va., on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
Interment will follow at Columbia Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Parkinson Association, 20202 Hamaker Court, Fairfax, VA 22031.
MARGARET G. GROVE
WESTERNPORT - Margaret Gertrude (Thomas) Grove, 76, of 26108 Grovemiller Lane, Westernport, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Oct. 21, 1922, in Woodlawn, she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Isabella McCluckie (Ewing) Thomas. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Wheeler Grove, on March 15, 1990.
"Gertie" was a homemaker, a Girl Scout leader for many years, and a volunteer at Moran Manor Nursing Home. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, W.Va.
She is survived by one son, Thomas Dwain Grove and wife, Tina, Uncasville, Conn.; two daughters, Della May Raines and husband, Jim, Keyser, W.Va., and Nancy Wertz and husband, Rick, LaVale. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Jeff and Troy Raines, Tanner and Tara Grove, Matt and Kandi Wertz; and three great-grandchildren, Devin, Aaron and Karlee Raines. Also surviving are two brothers, Charles Henry Thomas, Smithville, Ohio, and Samuel John Thomas, Midland; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Monday, April 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, April 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted at Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, on Wednesday, April 21, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph Jarrett officiating.
Interment will follow at Philos Cemetery, Westernport.
ELIZABETH G. GLASS
ACCIDENT - Elizabeth Gertrude Glass, 92, of 101 Town View Drive, Accident, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Sept. 2, 1906, in Accident, she was a daughter of the late August Charles Georg and Catherine Anna (Schevel) Georg. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Henry R. Glass, on Oct. 11, 1984; and a son, Ray Glass, on Oct. 14, 1992.
Mrs. Glass was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church (ELCA), Cove, and the Ladies Aid of the church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Clarence Glass, Oakland; two daughters, Doris Roberts, Lake Wylie, S.C., Phyllis Smith, Chardon, Ohio; a sister, Freda Moser, Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Friday evening.
Services will be conducted at St. John's Lutheran Church (ELCA), Cove, Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Roland E. Nairn III officiating.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services.
Interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Accident.
