ETHEL E. DAVIS
FREDERICK - Ethel Eleanor Davis, 85, of Frederick, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 6, 1914, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Virgil M. and Virginia Lee (Atwell) Rice. She was the wife of Gilbert Lorentz Davis, who died in May1990. She also was preceded in death by one brother Glenmore V. Rice; two sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.
Mrs. Davis was retired from Maryland School for the Deaf and was an active volunteer with the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Golden Circle Sunday school Class of Frederick.
She is survived by a daughter, Christine Lee Yinger and husband Richard of Frederick; three grandchildren, Belinda Lee Rhoads and husband Michael of Poolesville, Richard Allen Yinger and wife Tina of Walkerville, and Mary Virginia Yinger of Frederick; two great-grandchildren, Justin Allen and Cody Edward Yinger of Walkersville; one brother, Royce R. Rice and wife Phyllis of Frederick; one sister-in-law, Betty Bonner of Frederick. Also surviving is a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, where funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug 26. The Rev. Burnis Barrett will officiate.
Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

ALICE MARIE FRIEND
LAVALE - Alice Marie Friend, 78, of 934 Atlantic Ave., LaVale, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Nov. 18, 1920, in Sleepy Creek, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Sylvester Crone and the late Mary Susan (Rockwell) Crone. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Albert Lee Friend, on July 11, 1981.
Mrs. Friend was formerly employed by Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, Kelly-Springfield Tire Company, and Torch Steakhouse. She was a member of LaVale United Methodist Church and LaVale Century Club.
Surviving are a son, Jack William Friend, LaVale; a daughter, Janet Kay Friend, Cumberland; a brother, George Crone and wife, Doris, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; a grandson, Gregory Alan Cook and wife, Bobbie Kaye; and a great-granddaughter, Kelley Michelle Cook.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Monday at 1 p.m. at LaVale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bernadette M. Ross officiating.
Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
ALICE MARIE FRIEND
LAVALE - Alice Marie Friend, 78, of 934 Atlantic Ave., LaVale, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Friends will be received at the LaVale United Methodist Church on Monday from noon to 1 p.m., where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Bernadette M. Ross officiating.
Interment will be in the Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Russell Bucy, George Foster, Robert Foster, Wayne Foster, Lee Heavner and Paul David Crone.

EVA M. DAVIS
OAKLAND - Eva Mae Davis, 83, of Oakland, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Feb. 29, 1916, in Terra Alta, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late R. Earl Nordeck and Ada (Smith) Nordeck.
Mrs. Davis was a former employee of the First United Bank and Trust of Oakland; a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where she taught Wednesday Church School for many years, and was active in the Naomi Circle and the United Methodist Women.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Richard L. Davis; two daughters, Geraldine Lane, Sun City Center, Fla., and Brenda Teets, Jupiter, Fla.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Roger Harrison officiating.
Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the American Heart Association, the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad, or St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
JOHN L. GREEN
SYKESVILLE - John Lee "Tater" Green, 90, of Sykesville, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at Carroll County General Hospital, Westminster.
Born Jan. 6, 1909, in Barton, he was the son of the late John Adam and Alda (Broadwater) Green. He was the husband of Lucy H. Green of Sykesville.
He had been a coal miner for many years, and had been employed as a driver with Springfield Hospital Center.
Surviving in addition to his wife are sons John L. Green and Thomas L. Green, both of Sykesville; sister Dorothy Taylor, Moscow, Md.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was predeceased by his brother, Cecil Green.
Friends may call at the Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville.
VIRGINIA G. GRIGGS
CUMBERLAND - Virginia Gill Griggs, 83, of 628 Brookfield Ave., Cumberland, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born July 12, 1916, in Hampsted, Md., she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Chalk) Gill.
A graduate of Western Maryland College, she taught school briefly and was a devoted homemaker and mother. She was a long-time member of Saint Paul's Lutheran Church and its choir, a member of Laureate MU Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, the Cumberland Civic Club, Cumberland Garden Club, the Choral Society and the Cumberland Country Club.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, C. Harry Griggs, a resident of Devlin Manor Nursing Home; two daughters, Carol Heere and husband Doug, Gibsonia, Pa., and Ellen Miller and husband Gary, Beltsville; and four grandsons, Matthew and Steven Heere and Greg and Brent Miller.
A graveside service will be held at the Hillcrest cemetery on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Saint Paul's Lutheran Church Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. John J. Duffus officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Memorial Fund at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, Washington and Smallwood Streets, Cumberland, MD 21502.

FLORETTA M. DAVIS
WELLINGTON, Ohio - Floretta M. Davis, 86, of Diagonal Road, Wellington, formerly of Oakland, Md., died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at the Elyria Memorial Hospital, Elyria.
Born May 30, 1912, in Damascus, Va., she was the daughter of the late Harry F. and Vertie E. (Pike) Phillippi. She was also preceded in death by her husband, E. Gyle Davis; and one son, Charles E. Davis, both in 1983.
She was a member of the Pine Grove Church of the Brethren, Oakland.
She is survived by two daughters, Wilda K. Duncan, Baltimore, Md., and Mary F. Sines, Wellington; one sister, Muriel L. Sines, Oakland; one brother, Paul W. Phillippi, Oakland; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday.
Services will be held at the Pine Grove Church of the Brethren on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Matthews officiating.
Interment will be in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
