KIRKE W. DAVIS
FROSTBURG - Kirke Wagner Davis, 90, of Frostburg, joined his heavenly Father on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, after a long illness.
Born July 17, 1909, in Hong Kong, he was the son of the late Sarah and Frederick Davis, who were missionaries in China before resuming their ministry in the United States. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Gohn.
Surviving are his wife, Theresa Davis, Frostburg; two daughters, Gail Plitnik, Frostburg, and Gwendolyn Snyder, South Bend, Wash.; one sister, Helen Hobbs, Hampton, N. Hamp.; four grandchildren, Brian Plitnik and wife Desiree, Cumberland, David Plitnik, Japan, Ginger Banyai-Riepl and husband Chris, Naselle, Wash.; and Rebecca Strong and husband David, Naselle, Wash.; and one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Riepl.
Rev. Davis began his career as a professional musician, having graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. He had a music studio in Somerset, Pa., and played the violin throughout his life. He composed music in a variety of modes, including two symphonies.
He began his ministry in 1940, after graduating from Hartford Seminary. He was a minister of the gospel for 46 years until his retirement in 1986. He served in both the United Church of Christ and the Presbyterian Church, USA.
A memorial service, open to all, will be held at the Salem United Church of Christ, Frostburg, on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at 10 a.m. A light lunch will follow in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to the Salem United Church of Christ.
MARY E. DAVIS
CUMBERLAND - Mary Elizabeth Davis, 72, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 18, 1927, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Anderson, Sr., and Ollie May (Smith) Anderson. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Silvious and Betty Anderson; one brother, Jim Anderson; and one grandson, Jason Davis.
Mrs. Davis was a homemaker. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Cumberland, and the VFW Women's Auxiliary.
Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Boyd and husband, Duane, Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, Russell Davis and wife, Janet, Mt. Zion, Ill., and Sheldon "Pat" Davis and wife, Juanita, Cumberland; two brothers, Woody Anderson, Romney, W.Va., and Hugh Anderson, Jr., Purgitsville, W.Va.; four granddaughters, Michelle Morris, Cumberland, Samantha Brehm, Flintstone, Amber Boyd, Jacksonville, and Nicci Hayes, Mt. Zion; and two great-granddaughters, Raven and Lexy.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Saturday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home, Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with the Pastor Max Greenfield, officiating.
Interment will be in Old Pine Cemetery, Purgitsville, W.Va.
CECIL A. FAZENBAKER
LUKE - Cecil A. Fazenbaker, 89, of 325 Fairview St., Luke, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home, where he had been a resident.
Born Jan. 30, 1910, in Bloomington, Md., he was a son of the late Overton Ellsworth and Bertha Louise (Poling) Fazenbaker. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline I. (Kackley) Fazenbaker.
Mr. Fazenbaker was retired from the Westvaco Corp. with 46 1/2 years of service, where he was Tour Foreman of 4 and 5 Machine Room. He was a former member of the Tri-Towns Lions Club, and the Tri-Towns Senior Citizens. He was a member of the Piedmont Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Edna (North) Jennings Fazenbaker; a son, Cecil Holbert Fazenbaker, La Plata; two stepsons, Douglass Jennings, Keyser, W.Va., and Harold Jennings, Baltimore; a daughter, Caroline Sue Kasmier; a step-daughter, Margaret Ann Michael, LaVale; a brother, William T. Fazenbaker, Westernport; two sisters, Edna Biggs, Egle Nursing Home, Lonaconing, and Bertha Lease, Westernport; five grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Paul Smith.
Interment will be at Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
ADA BELLE FRENO
CUMBERLAND - Ada Belle Freno, 66, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on May 19, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital. She will be sadly missed by her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and loved her sisters and brothers dearly and they will always be treasured in her heart.
Born June 15, 1932, in Lake Gordon, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ira Ryan and the late Maude (Clites) Rising-Ryan. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Ryan and Douglas 'Buddy' Ryan; and a sister, Eva Louise Shanholtz.
Mrs. Freno was a dedicated homemaker. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #245, Ladies of the Moose #914, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fort Cumberland Post #13 American Legion.
Surviving are a loving daughter, Sherry Twigg and husband, James, Cresaptown, and their children, Misty and J.J. Twigg; a loving son, Joseph S. 'Joey' Freno, LaVale, and his children, Shana and T.J. Freno; also sadly missed by her former husband, Joseph Freno; four brothers, Leonard W. Rising, Avon Park, Fla., Daniel I. Ryan, Kentucky, Charles A. 'Butch' Ryan, Ridgeley, Royce R. Ryan, Ridgeley; three sisters, E. Madeline Price, Potomac Park, Gladys Faye White, Bowling Green, Cumberland, Shirley Yacenech, Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Reginald Russo O.F.M., CAP officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Mark Yacenech, Mike Yacenech, Lenny Glenn, Shane Jones, Bill Ryan, Roger Ryan and Larry Rice.
RICHARD J. DAVIS
RAWLINGS - Richard John Davis, 56, of Rawlings, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Sept. 23, 1942, in Pierce, W.Va., he was the son of Olive (Davis) Davis, Rawlings, and the late George Walter Davis.
Mr. Davis had served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era.
He was retired from CSX where he had been a machinist helper.
Mr. Davis attended the Rawlings United Methodist Church and was a member of Cresaptown Eagles, Aerie #2883.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Susan Lee (Schmidt) Davis; one son, Richard J. Davis Jr., and girlfriend, Melissa Mongold, Rawlings; two daughters, Jessica Sue Irene Comer and husband, Edward David Comer, and Tiffany Kay Davis, all of Rawlings; four sisters, Gail Grogg, McCoole, Jessie Johnson, Rawlings, Daisy Loar, Newburg, and Alma Kendall, Cresaptown; three brothers, Jack Davis, Rawlings, George Davis II, Cresaptown, and Arlie Davis, Cumberland; and five grandchildren, Zane Jones, Rawlings, Taylor Comer, Ridgeley, Mercedez Comer, Mackenzie Comer and Haley Portmess, all of Rawlings.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Members of Cresaptown Eagles, Aerie #2883, will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The funeral will be held on Monday, May 10, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Gary W. Trail officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
Military Honors will be accorded by the local Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
GENE L. DAWSON
WESTERNPORT - Gene L Dawson, 69, of 109 Green St., Westernport, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland.
Born in Westernport, on May 3, 1930, he was the son of the late William and May (Campbell) Dawson.
Mr. Dawson was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was retired from Westvaco Corp. with 43 years of service, having worked in the loaders.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Westernport. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed gardening.
Surviving are his wife Sheila (Fazenbaker) Dawson; two sons, Greg Dawson and wife Angie, and Scott Dawson, all of Westernport; two daughters, Nancy Shockney and husband Charles of Baltimore, and Shannon Dawson Westernport; two sisters, Donna Thomas of Barton and Jo Ann Kane of Keyser, W.Va.; and eight grandchildren, Justin Dawson, Jessie Dawson, Tyler Dawson, Micah Shockney, Johnathan Shockney, Jeremiah Dawson, Josiah Dawson and Annie Dawson. The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Eric Durden officiating.
Interment will be in the Philos Cemetery.
