CHARLES W. KNOTTS SR.
KITZMILLER - Charles William Knotts Sr., 70, of Kitzmiller, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at his residence.
Born May 23, 1929, in Ervin, W.Va., he was the son of the late John and Eula (Stemple) Knotts.
Mr. Knotts was a U.S. army veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a life member of the Deer Park VFW. He was the owner of a saw mill.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy (Miller) Knotts; two sons, Charles William Jr. and Kevin Knotts, both of Kitzmiller; two daughters, Kathy Knotts, Mountain Lake Park, and Leigh Huelskamp, Fort Payne, Ala.; one brother, Clifford Knotts, Elk Garden, W.Va.; three sisters, Rachel Monda and Viola Gentry, both of Glen Burnie, and Mildred Moreland, Elk Garden; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
At. Mr. Knott's request, his body was cremated.
Memorial service will be held in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Meredith Ball officiating.
Military services will be provided by the Combined Veterans organizations.
Arrangements are under the direction of the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller.
HAZEL E. LAWLER
CLIFTON FORGE, Va. - Hazel Elaine Lawler, 43, of Clifton Forge, formerly of Cumberland, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at her home.
Born March 7, 1956, in Grafton, W.Va., she was the daughter of Wilbert C. and Treva Pauline (Withers) Lawler, Taylor County, W.Va.
Ms. Lawler was a 1974 graduate of Fort Hill High School, Cum Laude graduate of University of Maryland School of Nursing, and was a graduate student in nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Clifton Forge.
Ms. Lawler was a program coordinator for the Alleghany Highlands Community Services Board from 1986-1998. She was a nurse in hospitals in Cumberland, Hagerstown and Charlotte, N.C., before moving to Virginia. She was Head Nurse of the Pediatric Unit at Memorial Hospital.
She was founder and coordinator of Project Impact, which was renamed the Hazel E. Lawler Children's Center in Alleghany Highlands. Ms. Lawler was recognized for the 12 years of distinguished service that she gave to benefit developmentally delayed children and their families through early intervention services that she created, beginning in 1986.
In addition to her parents, surviving are her husband, Gary L. Conway; three children, Jessica R. Simpson, Annandale, Va., Calum A. Conway and Atticus B. Conway, both at home; one brother, Ronald Lawler, Ridgeley, W.Va.; two sisters, Connie Valentine, LaVale, and Janet Lawler-Heavner, Denver, Colo.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Don Morris officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hazel Lawler Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o 205 Meadowdale Road, Clifton Forge, VA 24422. Donations will fund college scholarships for selected graduating seniors at Alleghany High School, Clifton Forge, to continue their education in the field of nursing.
JOHN L. LEE
SWANTON - John L. Lee, 67, of Swanton Road, Swanton, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born April 22, 1932, in Swanton, he was the son of the late John D. and Catherine E. (Wilt) Lee. He also was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Johnston; and one brother, Raymond Lee.
Mr. Lee worked on the B & O Railroad and later worked for Westvaco where he retired as a track foreman in 1985. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
Surviving are his wife, Freda J. (Hinebaugh) Lee; one daughter, Robin Park, Ga.; six sons, James Lee and wife Brenda, Ga., John R. Lee, Swanton, Ron Lee and wife Elaine, Ga., Carl Lee and wife Grace, Swanton, Randy Lee, Swanton, and Scott Hinebaugh, Ga.; one brother, Alvin Lee, Swanton; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Meredith Ball officiating.
Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Swanton.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.
SHIRLEY L. LONG
FLINTSTONE - Shirley Liah Long, 62, of Horseshoe Lane, Flintstone, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
Born Dec. 17, 1936, in Geneva, Ohio, she was the daughter of Effie Laurel (Hawes) Beck Dickson of Flintstone, and the late Fred Leroy Beck. She also was preceded by a brother, Harmon Beck.
Mrs. Long was a retired loan officer at First National Bank of Maryland and was currently employed at War Memorial Home Health, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. She was a member of the Women's Business Association of America.
Surviving in addition to her mother are two daughters, Theresa L. Gillaspie and husband Melvin E., Flintstone, and Donna L. Dolly and husband Dayton, Flintstone; a twin brother, Sydney C. Beck and wife Betty L., Masury, Ohio; three grandchildren, Brandie L. Dolly, Ladonna L. Dolly and Lucas M. Gillaspie, all of Flintstone; a former husband, Raymond O. Long, Stephen City, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Fred Iser officiating.
ROSE R. LUDDEKE
CUMBERLAND - Rose R. Luddeke, age 90, of 816 Roethe Ave., Cumberland, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 5, 1908, in Johnstown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Max Finkelson and Jennie (Coppersmith) Finkelson. Rose is also preceded in death by her husband, William Luddeke; and one sister, Maye Friedman.
She was a member of Ber Chayim Synagogue and a menber of the Cumberland Chapter of Hadassah.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the East View cemetery with Leonard Schwab officiating.
The family requests that those wishing to remember Rose's memory may do so with a memorial contribution to the Cumberland Chapter of Hadassah.
WILLIAM P. KNOTTS
GREENSBORO, N.C. - William Peter Knotts, 91, of Britthaven of Greensboro Nursing Center, formerly of Bowling Street, Cumberland, where he resided for 69 years, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the Nursing Center.
Born July 6, 1908, in Crellin, Md., he was the son of the late George Lawson Knotts and Daisy Margaret (Shaffer) Knotts. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Edna Lee Smith Knotts, April 1986, and one sister, Mildred K. Carskadon.
Mr. Knotts retired in 1973 after 47 years of service from the Western Maryland Railroad. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Cumberland; the choir; Administrative Board and Seper Fidelis Sunday school class. He was educated at Oakland High School, and Oakland and Catherman's Business School, Cumberland. His activities and hobbies included landscape oil painting, Woodmen of the World Lodge, Board of Directors, Chessie Federal Credit Union, and Men's Gospel Quartet.
Surviving are one son, Charles L. Knotts and wife Nancy, Greensboro, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Kristana L. Knotts, Westfield, Mass., and Stephanie M. Knotts, Greensboro.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted there on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
