ANNA K. JEFFRIES
ROANOKE, Va. - Anna K. Jeffries, 93, of Roanoke, formerly of Frostburg, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999.
Born Oct. 12, 1905, in Zihlman, Md., she was the daughter of the late John J. and Laura I. (Stevens) Koontz. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James Jeffries in 1972.
Mrs. Jeffries was a former Allegany County teacher. She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ.
Surviving are two daughters, Kay Brandenburg and husband Robert, Hagerstown, Md., and Jean Toggweiler and husband Richard, Roanoke; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Jeffries has been cremated.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, Md., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A memorial service will be held there on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lawrence A. Neumark officiating.
Inurnment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
RUTH M. LEWIS
CUMBERLAND - Ruth Mae (Howdershell) Lewis, 89, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 17, 1999, at her residence in the presence of her family.
Born June 17, 1910, in Moorefield, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James Robert and Nora (Wolfe) Howdershell. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Gerald Lewis; three sons, Andrew Jackson Lewis, Harold Edwin Lewis and Ronald Carroll Lewis; and two brothers, Harold Marvin Howdershell and Dalvin Howdershell.
Mrs. Lewis was a member of Winifred Road Church of Christ, exemplified Christian love and character, and will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are three sons, James Franklin Lewis and wife Barbara, Bowling Green, Thomas Gerald Lewis and wife Elise, Humble, Texas, and Herbert Otis Lewis and wife Noreen, Madison, Tenn.; four daughters, Geraldine Taylor, Cumberland, Madore Duncan, Shaft, Jenny Lewis, Nashville, Tenn., and Patricia McTaggart, Cumberland; one sister, Ina Ludwig, Baltimore; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granchild.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John R. Herbst and the Rev. Joe Penick officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Fred Lewis, Donnie Lewis, Clarence "Pooch" Lewis, Johnny Ludwig, Kenneth Buckalew and Donald Taylor.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Western Maryland Hospice Unit.
The family extends a heartfelt appreciation to Carol McKenzie and all the staff at the Western Maryland Hospice and Home Healthcare for the tender care that was given to her.
ARNETT D. HERNDON
OLDTOWN - Friends for Arnett D. Herndon will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in the Oldtown Veterans Cemetery, Oldtown. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
MONA C. HERSHBERGER
KITZMILLER - Mona Caroline Hershberger, age 56, of Kitzmiller, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at her residence.
Born Jan. 22, 1943, in Vindex, she was a daughter of Helen (Tasker) Burrell and the late Woodrow Harvey. She was also preceded in death by her step father, Jimmy Burrell; and one sister, Irene Love.
In addition to her mother she is survived by one brother, Gordie Harvey and wife, Karen, Baltimore; and one sister, Margie Rhodes and husband, Harold, Keyser, W.Va.
Friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Donald Nelson officiating.
Interment will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery, Mount Zion.
RUTH H. HIGGINS
FROSTBURG - Ruth Hughes Higgins, 76, of Frostburg, died Oct. 13, 1999, at the Calvert County Nursing Center in Prince Frederick, where she was a resident since July. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Higgins, formerly of Frostburg, and one brother, Benjamin Hughes, Frostburg.
Born June 10, 1923, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Hughes Sr. and Mary (Walker) Hughes.
Mrs. Higgins was a graduate of Beall High School class of 1941. She was employed by the G.C. Murphy Company until her retirement. She and her husband Andy moved to Melbourne, Fla., in 1987, and she returned to Frostburg in May, 1996.
Mrs. Higgins was a member of the Beall High School Alumni Association, the Frostburg Women of the Moose Lodge, Chapter 221, and was a life-long member of Saint John's Episcopal Church.
Surviving are one daughter Connie Blank Sullivan and husband Ronald Sullivan, Huntingtown; one son Andrew Higgins and wife Adrienne, Point of Rocks; one sister-in-law Rebecca Hughes, Frostburg; five grandchildren, Stephen Sullivan and wife Jenna Gallion, Cumberland, Katherine, Andrew Brady, Elizabeth Higgins, Centreville, Va., and Devan Fennesy, Point of Rocks; two nieces, Lynn Tudor, Glen Allen, Va., and Nancy Hughes, Columbia; and two grandnieces, Rebecca Wheless, Pawleys Island, N.C., and Jennifer Hammond, Raleigh, N.C.
At Mrs. Higgins' request, her body was cremated.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at Saint John's Episcopal Church, 58 Broadway, Frostburg, Saturday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. with Father Thomas Staupp officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the mass.
Inurnment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.
Memorial gifts may be made in Mrs. Higgins' memory to the Saint John's Episcopal Church Building Fund.
The Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., Frostburg, is in charge of arrangements.
SHIRLEY J. KRAUSE (VAN METER)
CUMBERLAND - Shirley Jean Krause, 63, of 13603 Yuma St., SW, Potomac Park, Cumberland, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born March 23, 1936, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Norman Ray Van Meter and Belva (Krothers) Van Meter. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Wanda Lee Zembower and Geraldine Herrera.
Mrs. Krause was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, Ronald Darrell Krause; one son, Ronald D. Krause Jr., Cumberland; three brothers, Milton L. Van Meter, James B. Van Meter Sr. and William R. Van Meter, all of Cumberland; and three sisters, Mary L. Houdersheldt, Wiley Ford, W.Va., Joan L. Weatherholt and Linda K. Meanyhan, both of Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m.
