DOROTHY F. JOHNSON
FROSTBURG - Dorothy Fay Johnson, 86, of the St. Vincent dePaul Nursing Center, Frostburg, formerly of Front Royal, Va., died Monday, July 12, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Dennis Michael officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap.
Serving as pallbearers will be Chad Ricker, Jason Ricker, Paul Lin, Robert Phelps, Danny Bierer and Richard Zupsic.
MARY E. JOHNSON
CUMBERLAND - Mary Edith Johnson, 86, of the Allegany County Nursing Home, formerly of Valley Road, Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Sept. 14, 1912, in Jordan Run, Maysville, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Berg and Lelia (Turner) Berg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dorsey ``Duke'' Johnson; three brothers, Rodney, Clarence and Hershel Berg; and three sisters, Delphia M. Berg, Naomi E. Nesselrodt and Stella B. Hanlin. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a member of the Cumberland Church of God.
Surviving are one son, Dorsey Johnson Jr. and wife, Carolyn, Westminster; three daughters, Bonnie M. Twigg, Cumberland, Maysel R. Clites and husband, Ronald, Beans Cove, Pa., Katherine J. Nesbitt, Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Stephen R. Twigg and wife, Donna, Cheryl L. VanHorn, Kimberly S. Wainscott, Cumberland, Brian R. Nesbitt and wife, Laura, Denver, Colo., Erik R. Johnson and wife, Cindy, Baltimore, Shawn C. Twigg, Cumberland, and Michele R. Ankney and husband, Tyler, Berlin, Pa.; five great-grandchildren, Kevin Twigg, Nathan VanHorn, Rachael Baier, Andrew Twigg and Jardon Twigg; four step-great-grandchildren, Derrick Clites, Codey Clites, Autumn Clites and Austin Turbin; one sister-in-law, Myrtle Berg; and two special nieces, Leona Nesselrodt and Norma Carr.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Price officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Twigg, Brian Nesbitt, Erik Johnson, Shawn Twigg, Kevin Twigg or Nathan VanHorn and Lonnie Nesselrodt.
ELIZABETH "LIZ" LAVIN
HOFFMAN - Elizabeth E. "Liz" Lavin, 58, formerly of Hoffman, died at her home in Lanham, Md.
Born June 1, 1940, in Hoffman, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Marie (Brode) Croston. She was also predeceased by her husband, James A. Lavin Jr.
Mrs. Lavin was a member of St. Matthias Apostle Church where she was also the secretary.
Surviving are one son, Michael Lavin and wife, J'Anne, Lanham; one daughter, Traci Lavin, Lanham; one granddaughter, Rebecca Lavin; one brother, Gerald Croston and wife, Kitty, Rawlings; and her mother-in-law, Margaret Lavin, Frostburg.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. with Father Paul A. Byrnes as celebrant.
Interment will be in Eckhart Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
RALPH J. "R.J." HIGHT
OAKLAND - Ralph J. "R.J." Hight, age 71, of Oakland, died on Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at his home.
He was born Aug. 27, 1927, in Monterville, W.Va., and was a son of the late Benjamin F. Hight and Lettie (Heavner) Hight.
He retired from the U.S. Army at the rank of Staff Sergeant, was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was a member of Randolph Lodge #55 A.F. & A.M., Beverly, W.Va., the Osiris Shrine Temple, the Osiris Hillbilly Clan #154, Post #10077 V.F.W. where he served as Vice-Commander, and the Deer Park Sportsmen's Club.
He is survived by his wife, Jarlath Fitzwater-Hight; one daughter, Linda Shigeta, Lihue, Hawaii; two stepsons, Brian Fitzwater, Stuttgart, Germany, and Wayne Fitzwater, Swanton; two brothers, Denver Hight, Mount Storm, W.Va., and Benjamin Hight, Marion, Ohio; two sisters, Mildred Currence, Port Hope, Mich., and Edna Mull, Lexington, Va.; one grandchild; and five step-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Oakland, on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Donald Parsons officiating.
Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
Military honors will be accorded at graveside by local veterans organizations.
Arrangements are being handled by the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland.
CALVIN W. ``SHORTY'' HINKLE
LONACONING - Calvin W. ``Shorty'' Hinkle, age 92, of the Egle Nursing Home, formerly of 1026 Kent Ave., Cumberland, died Dec. 29, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Due to the inclement weather on Jan. 2, 1999, his funeral was canceled. A memorial service will be held at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Mortimore of the First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing, officiating.
Interment was held in the Frostburg Memorial Park, Frostburg.
Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home following the service by Farrady Post #24 American Legion Honor Guard.
CHARLES B. HISE
CUMBERLAND - Charles Brookland Hise, 82, of Egle Nursing Home, Lonaconing, formerly of Cumberland, died at the nursing home Monday, April 19, 1999.
Born Jan. 17, 1917, in Fort Ashby, W.Va., he was the son of the late Jacob and Mary (Barnes) Hise.
Mr. Hise was a farmer by trade and a Protestant by faith.
Surviving are a niece, Irene Chaney, Moorefield, W.Va.; a great-niece, Christina Kerns; and a great-nephew, Robert Shaffer.
Private entombment was held at Restlawn Memorial Gardens on April 21, 1999.
The Upchurch Funeral Home Inc., Fort Ashby, was in charge of the arrangements.
HAROLD P. HITE
CUMBERLAND - Harold P. Hite, age 69, of 14300 Old Lake Drive, Cumberland, died May 3, 1999.
Born and raised in Centerville, Pa., he was the son of the late William P. Hite and Lola (Boor) Hite. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue; and two sisters, Leah Hite and Thelma (Hite) Gillum.
Mr. Hite retired as Executive Vice President of Carl Belt Inc. He began his career working as a laborer with the John I. Vandegrift Company. He became General Superintendent with the same company supervising the construction of industrial, commercial and institutional buildings. In 1962 he joined Carl O. Belt Sr. in forming the Carl Belt Construction Company, and served as Executive Vice-President. He served as President of the Harbel Inc. Construction Company at its inception.
He served in the Korean War in the Combat & Construction Engineers and earned the rank of Sergeant. A likeness of him as a soldier is displayed on the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C. He was a former member of the Board of Directors, LaVale Lions Club, and was a former member of the Allegany County Sanitary Commission. He also was a former member of the Engineers Club of Cumberland, a member of Maplehurst Country Club, and he served on the Club's Board of Directors. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #470, Frostburg, and the American Legion Post #113, Bedford, Pa. He was bestowed with life memberships in the Frostburg State University Bobcat Club and a life membership in the VFW Post at Mount Savage.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason, having been raised in Franklin Lodge #7, Buckhannon, W.Va., and he joined the Scottish Rite in Cumberland. He was a member of the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple and a charter member of Ali Ghan Legion of Honor. He was a member of the Ali Ghan Jesters, Court #117, and a member of Ali Ghan Motor Corp, and a charter member of Ali Ghan Campers Club. He was also a graduate of UHK of Alderson-Broaddus College.
Mr. Hite is survived by his wife, Marilyn Jean (Day) Hite; one daughter, Patricia A. Liller, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; one son, Kevin S. Hite, Fort Ashby; and two grandsons, Joshua and Zachary; one sister, Velda Smith, Cumberland; and two brothers, Veryl Hite and wife, Phyllis, Bedford, Pa., and Ken Hite and wife, Dorothy, Marion, S.C.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday, May 6, 1999, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, May 7, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in the Bethel Cemetery, Bedford Valley, Pa.
Ohr Lodge #131, A.F. & A.M., will hold services Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m.
In memory of Harold, donations can be made to the Ali Ghan Endowment Fund or to the charity of one's choice.
Pallbearers will be Dick Heavner, Ray Lapp, Fred Kriglein, Ray Long, Bill Delaney and Rick Walbert.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Belt Jr., Jim Hoyman, Frankie Smith, Jim Twigg, Paul Scott and Ronnie Leister.
