PAUL M. MURPHY
LONG STRETCH, Garrett County - Paul M. Murphy, 92, formerly of Long Stretch, Garrett County, died Sept. 2, 1999, in Shelby Township, Mich.
He was the son of the late C. Arthur and Corlista (Groghan) Murphy.
Survivors include one son, Donald Murphy, Rochester Hills, Mich.; one brother, George Murphy and wife, Naomi, Zihlman, and Sarah Shanholtz, Cumberland.
A memorial service will be held at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, on Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Broome, Jr., officiating.
Inurnment will be in Mt. Zion United Methodist Cemetery.
Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., Frostburg, is in charge of arrangements.
ANNE M. NIES
CUMBERLAND - Anne Margaret Nies, 89, of Cumberland Arms Apartments, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Cumberland.
Born July 17, 1909, in Mount Pleasant, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John Melago and Elizabeth Melago.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Sodality of the church.
She is survived by one brother, William Melago of Latrobe, Pa.; one sister, Beth Melago of Latrobe; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home, 230 Baltimore Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
ALLEN C. MURRAY
OAKLAND - Allen C. Murray, 71, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born June 10, 1928, in Altoona, Pa., he was the son of the late Cloyd C. Murray and Hilda (Kaltsmith) Murray.
Mr. Murray was retired from Fikes Dairy where he worked for many years as a procurement manager and dairy sanitarian. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, and was retired from the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department with 28 years of service, and served as Chief for 8 years. He was a member and past president of the Oakland Rotary Club, past Mayor of Mt. Lake Park and a member of Proctor Kildow, Post #71 American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Joan (McSorley) Murray; five sons, James M. Murray, Thomas P. Murray, Stephen A. Murray, Dennis D. Murray, and Allen (A.J.) Murray, all of Oakland; one son-in-kind, Thomas Stark, Oakland; four brothers, Paul Murray, Garland, Tex., Robert Murray, Galen Murray, and Lowell Murray, all of Altoona, Pa.; four sisters, Virginia Laws, Marilyn Hainley, Joyce Westover, and Darlene Schoch, all of Altoona; and 12 grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Oakland Volunteer Fire Department will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at Saint Peter's Catholic Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Martin Field and the Rev. David Moon officiating.
Interment will be in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
Military rites will be accorded at graveside by members of local veterans' organizations.
Family requests that flowers be omitted and contributions in Allen's memory be made to the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department for the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad.
RUSSELL METCALFE JR.
WESTERNPORT - Russell Jesse Metcalfe Jr., 61, of 212 Vine St., Westernport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at his residence.
Born June 3, 1937, at Beryl, W.Va., he was a son of Elizabeth (Riley) Metcalfe, Piedmont, W.Va., and the late Russell Jesse Metcalfe Sr. He was also preceded in death by a nephew, Steve Fox.
Mr. Metcalf was retired from Westvaco Corporation as a foreman in the 6 & 7 Machine Room. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Westernport, where he was a Eucharistic Minister, usher and greeter. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman, and he enjoyed woodworking.
In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife, Margaret (Frankland) Metcalfe; two sons, Russell Jesse Metcalfe III and wife, Cindy, Finksburg, and Christopher Lee Metcalfe and wife, Karen, Swanton; one brother, Ronnie Metcalfe and wife, Priscilla, Piedmont, W.Va.; two sisters, Elaine Smith and husband, Clay, Parsons, W.Va., and Debbie Kuhn and husband, Steve, Burlington, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Ashley Marie Metcalfe, Hunter Lee Metcalfe, Amy Nicole Metcalfe and Russell Jesse Metcalfe IV; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Monday, Feb. 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. with Father James Hannon as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Western Maryland Hospice Home Care of Cumberland, to Tri-Towns Rescue Squad, or to St. Peter's Church. Memorial cards can be picked up at the funeral home.
HARRIET STANTON POWELL
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Harriet Stanton Powell, 99, of Alexandria, formerly of Grantsville, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, in her home.
Born in Grantsville on Feb. 2, 1900, she was the daughter of the late James U. and Annie Stanton.
She was the widow of Major General William H. Powell Jr., U.S. Air Force, who preceded her in death in 1987.
She and General Powell had lived in various locations in the U.S. and abroad, including N.A.T.O. headquarters in Europe. Since 1953 they had lived in Alexandria.
Harriet was a member of Grace Reformed Church, Washington, D.C., where she served several years on the consistory of that church.
She is survived by a brother, Markle Stanton, Cumberland, Md.; a niece, Joyce Stanton, Catonsville, Md.; and a nephew, James Stanton, Trenton, N.J.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery.
The family requests memorials be made to Grace Reformed Church, 1405 15th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20005.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, Alexandria.
ANNA G. MURRAY
KENSINGTON - Anna Gertrude Murray, 91, of Circle Manor Nursing Home, Kensington, formerly of Cumberland, our very loving and caring mother, joined her husband, Dr. F.A.G. Murray, to be in the hands of the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999.
Born March 9, 1908, she enjoyed a very long life.
The highlights of her life, after her marriage to Dr. Murray were the birth of two daughters, Nancy A. (Murray) Tase, Virginia Beach, Va., and Elizabeth A. (Murray) Lickle, Sparks, Md.; four grandchildren, Stephen, Albert, and Cherie Tase and Nancy Lickle; and the joy of seeing her two great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Cassandra.
Mrs. Murray enjoyed an exceedingly proud moment when First Lady Barbara Bush personally visited her at length while she was living in the Circle Manor Nursing Home in Kensington. Circle Manor residents and staff alike considered Anna to be the "Queen of the Home" because of her impeccable dress habits, her constant smile and her pleasing personality. She also was one of the home's best Bingo players. She will be sincerely missed by her family and her many nursing home friends.
Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens by the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, LaVale, on Monday, Nov. 15.
Viewing and burial will be private.
