JAMES J. MURRAY
CUMBERLAND - James J. "Jim" Murray, 70, of Bel Air, Cumberland, beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, faithful brother, and friend to all, died Friday, Sept.10, 1999, after an extended illness.

Born on March 12, 1929, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late James M. and Alice (Winner) Murray.

Mr. Murray retired from the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company in 1985 after 38 years of service, having served the last 22 years of employment as Production Foreman for the company. He graduated from St. Joseph's Elementary School, Midland, Beall High School, and attended Frostburg State University.

While at Beall High, he was active in sports. He served as quarterback on the first football team and scored the school's first touchdown. He also played basketball, track, and threes of varsity baseball. As a senior of Beall High, he qualified for a membership in the National Star Athletic Society (N.S.A.S.) of Berkeley, Calif. He was selected for his outstanding ability, excellence of character, leadership and industry. He received a gold key and certificate at graduation from N.S.A.S. and also awarded the Beall High Sports Award and academic diploma.

Being an excellent fielder and base runner, he spent some time at the Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball Camp at Cambridge, Md. While stationed at Camp Rucker, Ala., he played for the Army's baseball team. Jim loved baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. He played with the BI-State League; startled Frostburg's Junior League, Hot Stove, High School Rec. League; served as commissioner, and was on the Executive Board of the Hot Stove, High School Rec. League; served as commissioner, and was on the Executive Board of the Hot Stove League.

He loved his family, enjoyed sports, fellowship, country music, reading and was a good Christian.

From 1947-1991 he worked with youth of the community. He had an opportunity to give back to the youth what others had given him during his younger years in Midland. He was the recipient of the 10th Annual Youth Activities Award of Lodge 63 B.P.O. Elks 1976-1977 in recognition of his outstanding contribution as an Elk to all youth throughout the community.

He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown, Frostburg Elks 470, Farrady Post 24 American Legion, Frostburg Alumni Football Club Inc. and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security, etc.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Robertine "Bobbie" Murray; one son, Michael Murray and wife Kathy; two grandsons, Brandon Michael and Austin Patrick; his pride and joy; one brother, William "Bilo" Murray and wife Connie, Mansfield, Ohio; two sisters, Noreen Murray and Patricia Kauffman and husband Jack, all of Cumberland; many nieces, nephews and special friends.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted at the funeral home at 8:45 p.m.

Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Fr. Vernon Busch, O.F.M., Cap., as celebrant.

Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Mt. Savage. Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Farrady Post 24 American Legion.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Walsh Middle/High School.

OSCAR "WAYNE" MURRAY
CUMBERLAND - Oscar "Wayne" Murray, 61, of Lexington Park, formerly of Cumberland, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, in Sinai Hospital of Baltimore.

Born Nov. 9, 1937, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late William Oscar and Iva D. Robertson Murray. He was the beloved husband of Sharon Diane Herring Murray whom he married on July 16, 1983, in Cumberland. He was the devoted father of Kathrine L. Mortensen of Lusby; Kelly Dison and Kristy Williams both of Tyler, Texas, and Sherry Hobbs of Great Mills. He was the brother of James W. Murray, Charles S. Murray, Pearl Logue, all of Baltimore; Frank Murray of Delta, Ky.; Jeanne Metz of North Carolina; Delores Harned of Annapolis and the late G. Marcella Squires and Betty Slider. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jack and Tyler Dison; Zach, Sarah and Clayton Mortensen; Caroline Williams and Katlyn and Adam Hobbs.

Mr. Murray graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1954. He retired from the U.S. Airforce in 1976 after 20 years of service. He later was a correctional officer for the Southern Maryland Pre-release unit. In 1984, Mr. Murray moved to St. Mary's County from Cumberland.

Viewing was held at the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, P.A., 41590 Fenwick Street, Leonardtown, MD, on Thursday, Aug. 19. Services were held Friday, Aug. 20, at 9 a.m. in the Mattingly-Gardiner Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Elliot Robertson officiating. Interment followed at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD. Contributions may be made to the Ridge Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 456, Ridge, MD 20680 and/or the American Diabetes Association, Washington, D.C. Area Affiliate, Inc., 1211 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Suite 501, Washington, D.C. 20036.

EVELYN B. MYERLY
LAVALE - Evelyn B. Myerly, 92, of 1213 W. Braddock Road, LaVale, formerly of Green Spring, W.Va., died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Born Aug. 13, 1906, in Shippensburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George Barrager and the late Clara (Luteman) Barrager. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Garland Myerly.

Mrs. Myerly was a former employee of Rosenbaum's Department Store for 18 years in the drapery department. She also was employed for many years at Jeannine's Boutique. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Cumberland.

Surviving are two daughters, Jeannine Clark and husband Marvin, LaVale, and Janet M. McCauley and husband Larry, Romney, W.Va.; two grandsons, L. Lynn McCauley, Winchester, Va., and Dr. Chris S. McCauley, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and two great-grandsons, Ryan S. McCauley and Ian W. McCauley.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. O. Morton Harris Jr. officiating.

Interment will be in the Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney.

GRACE E. POWERS
LONACONING - Grace E. (Leake) Powers, 81, formerly of Knapps Meadow, Lonaconing, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital. She had been a resident at Egle Nursing Home, Lonaconing, from May 1998 until her death.

Born Sept. 30, 1918, in Gilmore, she was the daughter of the late John Sidney and Maude (Winters) Leake. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Powers; three brothers, Sidney Leake, Bob Leake and John E. Leake; and two sisters, Bertha Steele and Clara Steele.

Grace was a member of the Grace Baptist Church, Cumberland. She was formerly employed at the Celanese Corporation, and also was a homemaker.

Surviving are three sisters, Maude E. Wilson, Ruth Wattenschaidt, both of Midland, and Marie Lauder and husband Allan, Glen Burnie; a very special niece, Alicia Miller and husband Marvin, Lonaconing; and numerous other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Grace had no children of her own, but all of her family was very special to her.

At her request, Grace was an anatomical donor.

A memorial service will be held at the Bethel Holiness Church, Lonaconing, on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. George R. Loar officiating.

Memorials may be made in her memory to the Egle Nursing Home, or to the Bethel Holiness Church, Lonaconing.

Final arrangements were entrusted to the Boal Funeral Home, Lonaconing.

ANNA E. MYERS
FROSTBURG - Anna E. Myers, 91, formerly of 80 Washington St., Frostburg, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital. She had been a resident of Frostburg Village Nursing Home for 11 months.

Born April 24, 1907, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Anna (Kroll) Everline. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Myers; one brother, Harman Everline; three sisters, Margaret Shank, Emma Hodel and Martha Williams; two nephews, Howard Everline and John Everline; and a special friend, Preston Nebil.

Mrs. Myers was employed by Berkowitz Shirt Factory and Myers Store. She was an active member of Salem United Church of Christ and the Mizpah Sunday School Class. She was a former member of Eastern Star, Mountain Chapter 15.

Surviving are one niece, Joanne Clise and husband William, Frostburg; four nephews, Robert F. Williams and wife Judy, Norfolk, Va., Karl Shank and wife Helen, Canton, Ohio, J. Arlan Shank and wife Lois, Louisville, Ohio, and Robert Everline and wife Margaret, Westernport; and her sister-in-law, Ruth, New Castle, Pa.

Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Lawrence A. Neumark officiating.

Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Salem United Church of Christ.

MARY S. NEVY
CUMBERLAND - Mary Suzanne Nevy, 85, of the Cumberland Nursing Home, formerly of Wempe Drive, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the nursing home.

She was born March 31, 1913, in Newburg, W.Va. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are her husband, Edward C. Nevy; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and interment services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the donor's charity of choice.

The Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, is in charge of arrangements.
