MILDRED L. MOONEY
CUMBERLAND - Mildred L. (Self) Mooney, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at her residence.
Born Jan. 28, 1932, in Flintstone, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Lula (Nelson) Self. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Michael Mooney, August 23, 1997; two brothers; and two sisters.
Mrs. Mooney was a homemaker. She was associated with Friendship Haven Chapel.
Surviving are five sons, Charles Mooney and wife, Donna, Trinidad, Calif., Michael Lawrence Mooney, Cumberland, Gary Mooney, Cumberland, Daniel Mooney, Cumberland, and Dale Mooney and wife, Belinda, Ridgeley; two daughters, Amy Ashbery and husband, Richard, Holly, N.Y., and Pamela Shanholtz and husband, Gary, Cumberland; one sister, Zernie VanMeter, Flintstone; four brothers, Alvin F. Self, Flintstone, Jona C. Self, Cumberland, Cleatus M. Self, Cumberland, and Earl F. Self, Flintstone; and 13 grandchildren.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Floyd Bender officiating.
Interment will be in Glendale Cemetery, Flintstone.
RUTH C. MONTGOMERY
HAGERSTOWN - Ruth Catherine Montgomery, 77, of 2377 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, died on Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at 1112 Sunnyside Drive, Hagerstown, at the home of her daughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Montgomery Jr., in 1980.
Born Feb. 28, 1922, in Riverton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lloyd B. Huffman and Kate Blizzard King.
She was of the Brethren faith.
She is survived by her two daughters, Jane Lee Powers and husband Michael, Sr., of Hagerstown, and Jean Coats and husband Charles of Damascus, Md.; one son, Clifford R. Montgomery and wife Betty of Rock Hill, S.C.; one sister, Reva Shirley of Keyser, W.Va.; one half brother, James King Edmonds of Washington; six grandchildren, Cliff Montgomery Jr. and Gary Montgomery, both of Rock Hill, S.C., David Coats of Germantown, Md., Carla Sanders and husband Loren and Michelle Binkley and husband Richard, both of Greencastle, Pa., and Michael Powers Jr. of Hagerstown; and four great-grandchildren, Amber Lee Conrad, Wyatt Binkley, Gabrielle Powers and Christopher Sanders.
The family will receive friends at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, one hour prior to the services.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer officiating.
Burial will be in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.
PAUL MONGOLD SR.
ODENTON - Paul Mongold Sr., 87, of Odenton, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg, W.Va., after an extended illness.
Mr. Mongold was one of 12 children. He loved baseball and enjoyed listening to and watching the Baltimore Orioles.
Originally from Petersburg, he moved his family to Odenton in 1958 after the closing of the Petersburg Tannery, where he had been employed. After moving to Odenton Mr. Mongold gained employment with Concrete Pipe and Products, Jessup, and worked there 18 years before retiring in 1976.
Mr. Mongold was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie (nee Shook) Mongold. He is the devoted father of Paul E. Jr., Baker, W.Va., Eloise A. Douglas, Clarksville, Texas, and Charlette Pokorny, Gambrills. He is the loving grandfather of nine, and great-grandfather of 14. His brothers, Delmar Mongold, Cresaptown, and Don Mongold, Petersburg; his sisters, Florence Borror and Virginia Cleaver, both of Cresaptown, Ruth Dawson, Boonsboro, survive him.
Visitors were received at the Singleton Funeral Home, P.A., 1 Second Ave., and S.W. (at Crain Highway), Glen Burnie, on Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m.; and will be received on Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Nichols Bethel United Methodist Church, Odenton, on Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at 2 p.m.
Interment will be in Nichols Bethel Church Cemetery.
NELLIE E. PAUL
CUMBERLAND - Nellie Elizabeth Paul, 95, formerly of Washington, D.C., died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born July 12, 1904, Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Henry Hampton Little and Rose (Rice) Little.
Mrs. Paul attended Catherman's Business School, Cumberland, and was formerly employed by the federal government and worked as an auditor, both with the General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C. and in Asheville, N.C. She later transferred to the audit section of the U.S. Civil Service Commission in Washington, D.C., with 22 years of federal service before retiring in 1963. She was a long-time member of National City Christian Church, Washington, D.C.
Surviving are a special niece Lettie Sue Clites; a lifelong friend Elizabeth E. Schwenninger and several nieces and a nephew.
Mrs. Paul's cremated remains will be interred at Hillcrest Burial Park.
Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, is in charge of arrangements.
MICHAEL A. MONAHAN
LEESBURG, Va. - Michael A. Monahan, 44, of Leesburg, formerly of Cumberland, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Born Aug. 4, 1954, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John Joseph Monahan Sr. and Irene (Kiraly) Monahan. He was also preceded in death by one brother, John Monahan Jr.
Mr. Monahan was a car salesman in Leesburg. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran having served from 1973 to 1974, and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland, St. John's Catholic Church, Leesburg, and the Army National Guard.
Surviving are one son, Brandon James Monahan, Cumberland; two sisters, Pamela R. Hardinger and husband, Glenn Jr., Ridgeley, W.Va., Diane Fairgrieve and husband, Gary, Leesburg; and one brother, Patrick F. Monahan and wife, Cindy, Columbia; one niece, Shannon Monahan; and five nephews, Sean Monahan, Jonathan and Scott Fairgrieve, Joshua and Jeremy Hardinger.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home Monday at 8:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Fr. Michael Taylor as celebrant, and concelebrated by Fr. Jerry Wooten.
Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Frostburg.
Pallbearers will be John McGeady, Mickey McGeady, Matthew Reader, John Klosterman, Craig Hardinger and Dave DeSoto.
EVELYN V. NELSON
FROSTBURG - Evelyn Virginia Nelson, 87, of 18 Standish St., died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Aug. 3, 1911, in Bertrand, Neb., she was the daughter of the late Carl Axel and Ellen (Carlson) Lilyhorn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice E. Nelson; her stepmother, Elmina (Pearson) Lilyhorn; and her brother, Donald E. Lilyhorn.
Mrs. Nelson attended school at Bertrand, Loomis and Kearney State Teachers College in Nebraska. She did secretarial work before her marriage. In 1941 she and her husband moved from Loomis, Neb., to Frostburg with their two small children. She worked for several years at The Gift Shop on Broadway in Frostburg and later at Truly's Candy Shop in the Searstown Shopping Center, LaVale.
She was an active member of Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, Frostburg, WELCA, Church Women United, and the Frostburg Hospital Auxiliary. She taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir for many years.
Surviving are one son, Kay Maurice Nelson and wife, Charren, Greensboro, N.C.; one daughter, Janet Ellen Harden and husband, Darrell, Frostburg; two granddaughters, Linda Lee Harden, Santa Cruz, Calif., and Jennifer Lynn Harden, Baltimore; four stepgrandchildren, Tracy Hall and wife, Karen, Severn, Lee Hall and wife, Noelle, Bel Air, Md., Virginia Meyers and husband, Kenneth, Abington, Matthew Hall and wife, Michelle, Bowling Green, Ky.; three sisters-in-law, Maurine Hofferber, McCook, Neb., Maria Moore, Holdrege, Neb., and Marie Lilyhorn, Dearborn, Mich.; six nieces; and four nephews.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Ellis Kretschmer officiating.
The body will be cremated. Inurnment will be in the Moses Hill Cemetery, Holdrege.
