RUTH E. PORTMESS
CUMBERLAND - Ruth Ellen Portmess, 70, of McMullen Highway, Cumberland, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 16, 1928, in Mexico Farms, Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Jerome Jochin and Blanche Pearl (Barney) Johnson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Woodrow Portmess, in November 1969; one son, Earl Lee Portmess, in March 1991; two brothers, Floyd and Harvey Johnson; and one sister, Helen Portmess.
Mrs. Portmess was a dedicated registered nurse at Memorial Hospital ICU and Memorial Home Care for 38 years. She was a 1946 graduate of Fort Hill High School and a 1952 graduate of Allegany School of Nursing at Sacred Heart Hospital. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cresaptown. She was a member of the Women of the Moose #271, Cumberland, and the Experimental Aircraft Association. She received her aircraft pilot license in 1947 and she flew solo an Aeronca plane at the age of 16. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.
Surviving are two sons, James L. Portmess, Cumberland, and Mark A. Portmess and wife Beverly, Cumberland; one brother, Donald Johnson and wife Mary Ellen, Mexico Farms; one grandson, Matt Portmess, Cresaptown; one granddaughter, Hollie Portmess, Frostburg; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
At Mrs. Portmess' request, her body was donated to medical science.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church Saturday at 11 a.m. with Father Reginald Russo, O.F.M., Cap., as celebrant. Friends will be received one hour prior to the mass at the church.
The family requests contributions be made to St. Ambrose Catholic Church, St. Mary's Catholic Church, or the American Heart Association.
The Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., is in charge of the arrangements.
ALBERT "MOSE" NEAL
FROSTBURG - Albert M. "Mose" Neal, 75, of the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville, and formerly of 161 Bowery St., Frostburg, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore.
Born May 2, 1923, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late James E. and Mary (Cook) Neal. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur D. Neal, John W. Neal and James A. Neal.
Mr. Neal was retired from the former Stoop's Restaurant, Frostburg, where he was the manager. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church. He also was a Life Member of the Frostburg B.P.O. Elks #470 and the Alvin C. Neat V.F.W. Post #5280, Lonaconing; a member of Mountain Lodge #99 A.F. & A.M., Frostburg, Ali Ghan Shrine Temple, Cumberland, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Bodies, Cumberland; a former member of the Frostburg Volunteer Fire Department; and a 20-year candidate of cancer research at the National Institute of Health.
Surviving are two sisters, Mary V. Neal, Baltimore, and Nancy L. Neal, Frostburg; a brother, Walter L. Neal, Cape Coral, Fla.; and four nephews, A. Donald Neal, Rockville, James O.H. Neal, Ocoee, Fla., John W. Neal Jr., Baltimore, and Ralph L. Neal, Baltimore.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Frostburg Elks will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Mountain Lodge #99 A.F. & A.M. will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. George A. Aist officiating.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park. Farrady Post #24 American Legion Honor Guard will accord military honors at graveside.
The family request memorials be directed to the Frostburg United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Fund.
YETTA MATZ
FROSTBURG - Yetta Matz, 96, of Frostburg, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born July 4, 1902, in Minsk, Russia, she was the daughter of the late Solomon and Minne (Seltzer) Motz. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Max Matz; and a son, Gerald Matz.
Mrs. Matz was a member of Pahoster Brothers, and a lifetime member of Hadassah.
Surviving are a son, Seymour Matz, Boca Raton, Fla,; two daughters, Roslyn Levin, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Frances Jablon, Frostburg; two brothers, Joseph Motz and Lloyd Motz, both of New York; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted in the Mount Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, N.Y., on Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at 1:30 p.m. with Rabbi Abraham Eckstein officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Matz to Hadassah.
MICHAEL L. MCKENZIE
MANCHESTER - Michael Lee McKenzie, age 22, of Manchester, died suddenly on Feb. 20, 1999, at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma.
Born May 10, 1976, in Cumberland, he was the son of William Paul and Rosemary Arnone McKenzie Jr., Manchester. He was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James Arnone, Frostburg, and Mrs. Anne V. McKenzie, Cumberland, and the late William P. McKenzie Sr.
He was a graduate of North Carroll High School, Class of 1994. He was a warehouse worker for Carroll County Foods. He was a past member of the board of directors of G.B.B.A., and was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Westminster.
Surviving in addition to his parents and grandparents are his sister, Rebecca Lynne McKenzie, Manchester; and his brother, Kevin M. McKenzie, Manchester.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John's Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster, on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in Meadowbranch Cemetery, Westminster.
Friends may call at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

ETHEL C. MAUST
GRANTSVILLE - Ethel Catharine Maust, 95, formerly of Springs, Pa., died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999 at Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.
Born June 5, 1904, in Rawlings, she was a daughter of the late Christian A. and Mary Ann (Keim) Beachy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Maust; a grandson, Andrew Hillary Durst; a brother, Clyde Beachy; and a sister, Hester Margroff.
Mrs. Maust was a member of Maple Glen Church of the Brethren, Fort Hill, Pa., and was a retired school teacher for the Garrett County Board of Education. She established the weaving program at Penn Alps and was the weaving teacher.
Mrs. Maust was the last surviving member of the first graduating class of Grantsville High School in 1923.
She is survived by a daughter, Jean Durst, Grantsville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted Monday at noon at Maple Glen Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Daniel J. Whitacre officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the Ethel Maust Memorial Weaving Scholarship in care of the family.
FRANK E. POLAND
WESTERNPORT - Frank Edward Poland, 82, of 204 Kelley Ave., Westernport, died on Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, W.Va.
Born May 6, 1916, in Piedmont, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry S. and Anna M. (Spiker) Poland. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Frederick 'Jerry' Junior Poland, Robert 'Bus' G. Poland, Charles 'Bill' B. Poland, and James G. Poland; and his sister, Jesse P. Wilson.
Mr. Poland was a retired principal of the Chestnut Hills Elementary School, Beltsville, Md.; a graduate of Piedmont High School and Frostburg State College; a member of the Maryland Retired Teachers Association; a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont; a 50-year-plus member of the Davis Lodge No. 51 AF & AM, Keyser, Ali Ghan Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite Cumberland Consistory, Order of Eastern Star No. 29, Odenton, Md., El Fidel Club, and Mill Creek Country Club; a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; and member of Kelley Mansfield Post No. 52 American Legion, Piedmont.
Surviving are his wife, Helene (Neville) Poland; his brother, Thomas H. Poland, Keyser; his sister, Anna V. 'Nuddie' Smith, Westernport; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Paul J. and Joanne C. Welsh.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Friday, April 30, 1999, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, May 1, 1999, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph D. Jarrett officiating.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
