VIRGINIA H. MECHEM
CUMBERLAND - Virginia Hazel Mechem, 85, formerly of 517 Williams St., Cumberland, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at the Allegany County Nursing Home.
Born June 28, 1913, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Irvin and Amanda (Payne) Henry. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward Glenn Mechem, in 1973.
Mrs. Mechem attended Grace Baptist Church. She was a member of Berkeley Springs Chapter #77, Order of the Eastern Star and the Mount Herman Homemakers.
Survivors include three daughters, Arlene Foreback and husband, Harry, Cumberland, Shirley Platt and husband, Earl, and Kathy Wolfsteller and husband, Keith, all of Minnesota; two sons, Glenn "Jim" Mechem and wife, Nancy, Cumberland, and Clyde "Pete" Mechem and wife, Charlene, LaVale; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Doug White officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

MARY L. MELLON
CUMBERLAND - Mary Lucille Mellon, 69, of Bedford Road, Cumberland, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at the Devlin Manor Nursing Home.
Born June 15, 1929, in Rivesville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Evelyn Williams Eddy.
Mary had worked as a sales person at Sears for 20 years, and was a home health aid for 15 years. She had been a bowling league bowler for many years, enjoyed bingo, and raised exotic birds.
Surviving are a daughter, Jenna Tresch of Erial, N.J., and her father, James E. Mellon of LaVale; a grandson, Vincent Scarpelli of Erial, N.J.; a sister, Sandra Henderson of West Virginia; and a brother, Wayne Eddy of West Virginia.
At Mrs. Mellon's request, there will be no public visitation. Her body will be cremated.
Memorial services will be conducted at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Saturday, March 20, 1999, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr. officiating.
ROBERT E. MERCER
CUMBERLAND - Robert E. Mercer, 55, of Cumberland, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born March 11, 1944, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Robert Paul Mercer and the late Delphine (Myers) Mercer Welsh.
Mr. Mercer was a U.S. Army veteran having served from 1961 to 1964. He was of the Protestant faith.
Surviving are four sisters, Eleanor D. Reitmeier and husband, John, Cumberland, Leslie D. Stafford, Cumberland, Diane Imgham and husband, Jerry, Lancaster, Pa., Sharon L. Shields and husband, John, Lancaster; one brother, C. Michael Welsh, Lancaster; eight nieces; three nephews; two great-nephews; one great-niece; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
There will be no visitation.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
The family requests contributions be made to the Archway Station, 408 N. Centre St., Cumberland, MD 21502.

MARY J. MERICA
RAWLINGS - Mary J. Merica, 93, of Rawlings, formerly of Little Orleans, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born in Green Ridge on June 19, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Ida Bell (Snyder) Keefer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lester William Merica, who died in 1962; one brother, Harry Thomas; three sisters, Rose Marie Keefer, Katherine Edwards and Annabelle Hartell. She was also preceded in death by one great-grandson; and one great-great-grandson.
A homemaker, she is survived by two daughters, Hilda B. Walker, McCoole, and Margaret Peck, Rawlings; one son, Ronnel Frank Merica and wife, Carolyn, Newark, Ohio; three sisters, Melissa Hartell and Emma Warner, both of Cumberland, and Genevieve Keefer, Rawlings; nine grandchildren, Robert Walker and wife, Susie, Marie Liller, all of Newark, Marvin L. Peck and wife, Sharon, Linda M. Shipway and husband, Edward, Hilda L. Whorton and husband, John, Brenda Kay Roberson and husband, Gary, all of Flintstone, McLinda S. Barger, Clearville, Pa., Lori Ann Ridgeley and husband, Leonard, Hagerstown, and Carol A. Noice and husband, Ryan, Newark; 19 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Parker officiating.
Interment will be in Martins Cemetery, Little Orleans.
EUGENE C. PARK
CUMBERLAND - Eugene C. Park, 74, of Cumberland, formerly of Ridgeley, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at his residence.
Born Jan. 5, 1925, in Augusta, W.Va., he was the son of the late Dennis and Bessie (McBride) Park. He also was preceded in death by three sisters, Georgia Peer, Margaret Powell Feight, and Betty Jane Knippenberg.
Mr. Park was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II at North Solomon, Southern Philippines 182nd Infantry-Medical Detachment, where he received the Asiatic-Pacific theater ribbon with two Bronze stars, the Good Conduct ribbon, the Philippine Liberation ribbon with one bronze star, the Purple Heart medal, the Bronze Star medal, the Bronze Arrowhead, and the World War II Victory. He was a First Class Engineer for Kelly-Springfield Tire Company where he received early retirement after 34 years of service. He was a member of the Graceland Baptist Church, Short Gap, W.Va., Bible Baptist Church, New Port Richey, Fla., Davis Lodge #51 A.F. & A.M., Keyser, W.Va., past member of Ali Ghan Shrine Club, and past president of the Engineer's Club.
Surviving are his wife, Esta (McDonald) Park; one daughter, Sheila Joy and husband Terry, Ridgeley, W.Va.; two stepdaughters, Sonja M. Rapson, Rawlings, and Tammy F. Wilkinson, Glendale, Ga.; one stepson, Pastor Charles "Chuck" E. Park, Mainsburg, Pa.; five grandsons; three granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
At Mr. Park's request, his body will be cremated.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Frederick Street, on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m. with Pastor David Hattenfield officiating.

LORETTA M. MERRBACH
CUMBERLAND - Loretta Madeline Geary Merrbach, 77, of 11521 Bank Ave., S.W., died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born in Cumberland on June 23, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Elmer C. Furlow Sr. and Tiny Loretta (O'Baker) Furlow.
Mrs. Merrbach was a Jehovah's Witness for 50 years. She took great pleasure in helping other people to learn about the Bible.
Surviving are a husband, Wilbert J. Merrbach; two daughters, Nancy V. Santos and husband Daniel, Grafton, W.Va., and Sylvia M. Robison and husband Ronald, LaVale; one son, Gene Geary and friend Mary Turner, Cumberland; one brother, Lester A Furlow and wife Velma, Mount Savage; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and seven stepchildren.
Mrs. Merrbach was cremated at the Cumberland Crematory. A memorial service will be conducted at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, Cherry Lane, Frostburg, on Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at 6:30 p.m. with speaker Mr. Shaun Palmateer officiating.
The inurnment of ashes will take place on Friday, Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap.
The Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, was in charge of arrangements.
PAUL J. MERRILL
OAKLAND - Paul Joseph Merrill, age 76, of 80 River Hill Road, Oakland, died Saturday at his home.
He was born March 12, 1922, in Salisbury, Pa., and was a son of the late James O. Merrill and Drucilla (Hummell) Merrill.
Mr. Merrill was a retired meat cutter, having been employed by Brownings Foodland for many years. He was also a member of the Full Gospel Businessmen's Association.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Elizabeth (Shaffer) Merrill; two daughters, Paula M. Shortridge, Manassas, Va., and Pamela Georg, Accident; three grandchildren, Melissa Shiflett, Brittany Georg, and Justin Georg.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Harman officiating.
Interment will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
