REV. WILLIAM R. "BILL" MERRIMAN
SANTA FE, Kan. - The Rev. William R. "Bill" Merriman, age 82, Santa Fe, formerly of Zihlman, Md., and later Barton, Md., died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at the Hays Medical Center, Hays.
He was born Feb. 25, 1916, in Zihlman, to Richard and Elizabeth (Hamilton) Merriman.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force with the 30th Bomb Group in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He graduated from Western Maryland College with a bachelor of arts degree in History, and received his master's degree in Divinity from Duke University.
He married
Neva J. Kleinhans on June 24, 1951, in Colby, Kan. He served as a Methodist minister for the Kansas East and West Conferences for 30 years, retiring in 1980 from the Ranson and Brownell Methodist Churches. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hays.
Survivors include his wife, Neva, of the home; four children, Joy Trollman, Cut Bank, Mont., Dick, Winfield, Kan., Ryan, Shawnee, Kan., and Sarah, Lawrence, Kan.; two sisters, Gladys Miller, Cumberland, Md., and Doris Lashbaugh, Hampstead, Md.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Merriman; and a half-sister, Hazel Angle.
Graveside services were held on Jan. 11 at Mount Allen cemetery in Hays with Dr. John Taulin officiating.
TRAVIS M. "BUBBY" POWELSON
OLDTOWN - Travis Michael "Bubby" Powelson, 2, of Oldtown, died Friday at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.
Born May 16, 1997, in Cumberland, he was the son of Maricay Renee (Hedrick) Powelson, Oldtown, and Robert Michael Powelson, Cumberland.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Jackie and Ronnie Graham, Cumberland; paternal grandparents, John Donald and Sarah Powelson, Fort Ashby, W.Va., and James Raymond Mundy, Oregon; maternal great-grandparents, Jack and Mary Jane Schade, Cumberland; paternal great-grandmother, Letha Powelson, Cumberland; six uncles, James Raymond Mundy III, Brian Richard Shipway, Brian Keith Netzer, Robby Hedrick and Hazel Mathews, Joe and Barb Hemmis, and Rusty Schade; five aunts, Donica Louise Evans, LeeAnn Michele Mundy, LaToya Jonielle Mundy, Autumn Rose Graham, and Arica Dawn Graham; 13 cousins, Shantelle Nicole Mundy, Natasha Ryan Evans, Natalie Ann Evans, Autumn Rayne Mundy, Cheyanne Nicole Mundy, Coulter Lakota Gawith, Cayleigh Michelle Mundy, Austin Hedrick, Dalton Hedrick, Casey Hemmis, Tania Hemmis, Jay Hemmis, Ty Hemmis; and special family friend James Welsh Jr. and family.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, with Betty Kennedy officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Serving as pallbearers will be William Welsh, Bruce Shaffer, Chuck O'Haver, Robby Hedrick and Casey Hemmis.
SARA A. MERRITT
CUMBERLAND - Sara Ann (Miller) Merritt, 59, of Center St., Cumberland, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999 at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore.
Born March 10, 1940 in Berlin, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Maylon M. and Belvia A. (Davis) Miller. Her husband also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Merritt is survived by one son, Paul W. Miller, Cumberland; one stepson, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Merritt; one daughter, Terri Jo Rice, Cresaptown; two brothers, Merle M. "Herk" Miller, Cumberland, and Mervin M. "Dub" Miller, Baltimore; two grandchildren, Josh and Jason Rice; two step-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Merritt, a homemaker, seamstress, and private sitter, and was a member of the Central Assembly of God, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, Pa., Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. David Diehl officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

ROBERT "BOB" MERTENS
CUMBERLAND - Robert "Bob" Mertens, 81, of 11718 Bedford Road, N.E., Cumberland, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 24, 1917, in Prosperity, he was the son of the late John F. Mertens and the late Elsie M. (Yeargan) Collins.
Mr. Mertens was the owner/operator of the Robert Mertens Plumbing and Heating Company. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer and bowler in area leagues. He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Navy.
Surviving are his wife, Jane (Stallings) Mertens, Cumberland; two sons, Dr. Robert L. Mertens and wife, Miriam, Columbus, Ohio, and James F. Mertens and wife, Millie, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a daughter, Barbara Diehl, Springfield, Va.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Paul Mertens and wife, Lora, Marietta, Ga., Elmer Mertens and wife, Mary, Lancaster, Ohio, Dr. Boyd Mertens and wife, Betty, Cumberland, and James Mertens and wife, Carolyn, Columbus, Ohio; and one sister, JoAnn Bainter, Lancaster, Ohio.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Edward Dickel officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
MAX PERLIS
CUMBERLAND - Max Perlis, 91, a resident of the Kensington-Algonquin, Cumberland, died Friday, July 30, 1999, in the Kensington-Algonquin.
He was born on Sept. 6, 1907, the son of the late David and Sara (Baum) Perlis.
Surviving is a sister, Bessie Perlis, New Orleans, La.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted by Leonard Schwab in Eastview cemetery on Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at 1 p.m.
Interment will follow in Eastview Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale.
HIRAM R. "TED" METCALFE
WESTERNPORT - Hiram R. "Ted" Metcalfe, 83, of 1425 Beacon St., Keyser, W.Va., formerly of 291 Pine Key Lane, Naples, Fla., died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport.
Born in Beryl, W.Va., he was the son of the late Otis M. and Sarah E. (Waxler) Metcalfe.
Mr. Metcalfe was a winter resident of Naples since 1982, coming from Swanton after retiring from Westvaco Corp., Luke, where he was employed for 41 years. At retirement, he was supervisor of the Print Shop.
He was a member of the Church of the Brethren, Westernport, where he served as a moderator and lifetime deacon. He served in the Educational Department as Superintendent of the Church School and taught juniors, youth and adults for approximately 50 years. He also served in the Music Department, Choir, and male and mixed quartets and was manager of the PV4 directed by Ralph E. Fike.
During the summer months, he attended the Swanton United Methodist Church, was assistant teacher of the Men's Bible Class and taught Vacation Bible School. While living at Swanton he was host for the annual Volunteer Bible Class, Church of the Brethren, the annual Ashby Reunion and the annual Metcalfe Reunion.
He was a member of the Swanton Community Senior Citizens' Center; a member of Hiram Lodge #103 AF & AM, Westernport, having served as Worshipful Master several times; a member of the Bethlehem Chapter #14 OES; a member of the Scottish Rite Freemasonry 32nd degree Mason, Cumberland; a member and Past President of the Piedmont Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He honored his wife, Helen, with a Paul Harris Fellow and represented this Club at the International Convention in Orlando, Fla. When the Piedmont Rotary Club terminated, he joined the Keyser Rotary Club. He had a continuing association with the Boy Scouts, having served as Cub Master, committee member, and he assisted in organizing the Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troops in McCoole.
With the assistance of the late Wayne Ritchie, Westernport, he organized the United Organizations of McCoole. He was past president of the McCoole PTA and was honored with a life membership. He served on the Board of Directors of WEPCO Federal Credit Union for 16 years, Supervisor Committee, V.P. and served as President when the new office building was constructed and dedicated in Bloomington. He was director and V.P. of the West Wind Est. Condo, Naples. He attended the East Naples United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir, men's club and assisted with the fund-raising dinners. He also worked with the men of the church when they worked for Habitat for Humanity.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Helen (Ashby) Metcalfe; and his son, Theodore L. "Ted" Metcalfe and wife, Judy; his granddaughter, Kimberly S. Sanders; his great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn E. Reeves; his great-grandson, Ashby J. "A.J." Reeves, all of Keyser; and his sister, Genevieve McAllister and husband, Harry, Las Vegas, Nev.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Church of the Brethren, Westernport, on Sunday, July 18, 1999, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ervin L. Huston, the Rev. William Shimer officiating, and Robert Shimer.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
A memorial service will be held by the Hiram Lodge #103, AF & AM at the Markwood Funeral Home on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
