ALMA V. PRICE (WHITEMAN)
WESTERNPORT - Alma Vinora Whiteman Price died on Thursday, July 29, 1999, at Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Price was born on Oct. 17, 1918, in Piedmont, W.Va., to Nettie Combs Whiteman and Griffith H. Whiteman. She spent much of her younger life in the Tri-Towns and graduated from Bruce High School with the Class of 1936. During her retirement years in Westernport, she participated in many of the alumnae activities and was sorry not to have been able to attend this year's 100th Anniversary for Bruce.
Prior to marriage, Mrs. Price was one of the original "Rosie, The Riveters" with Fairchild Aircraft Factory in Hagerstown. Before that, she held several positions with Westvaco. In 1942, she married
her high school sweetheart, James Leon Price, who was with the U.S. Army Air Corps in those days, which became the U.S. Air Force in 1949. Mrs. Price followed her husband during all of his military travels and went everywhere with him except to Vietnam. The couple lived in Japan just after World War II where she played the organ for the Air Base Chapel since she was an accomplished musician. They were stationed in Alaska and Hawaii while both were still U.S. Territories. Trained by the Air Force to be a Nurse and Dental Hygienist, she worked in the base hospitals at several locations. Besides living and traveling all over the United States, they were based in Libya. While there, Mrs. Price journeyed extensively to the Holy Lands, Egypt, through Europe and around the Mediterranean Sea. Because of her husband's frequent flying as a pilot and his subsequent absence from home, Mrs. Price was a strong mother and best friend to her two children.
In 1971, the couple retired from the military after 29 1/2 years of service and returned to Westernport. Mrs. Price was again very active at Trinity United Methodist Church, the church of her youth. She played the piano for her Sunday School Classes for many years and was lauded for 50 years of service by the churchwomen.
Mrs. Price is survived by her sister, Polly Whiteman, also of Westernport, and her two children, James Griffith Price (LTC, U.S. Army, Fort Knox, Ky.) and Teri Lea Price of Gaithersburg, Md. Her three grandchildren are Nichi Price Brinkman, James Garreth Price and Ian Christopher Price.
Friends will be received at Boal's Funeral Home in Westernport from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, August 2nd. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Piedmont on Tuesday, August 3rd, with the Rev. M. Ball presiding. Burial will be at Arlington National cemetery in Virginia. As is the custom at military cemeteries, Mrs. Price will be buried on top of her husband who died in 1975. Her name will be added to his stone.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Tri-Towns Rescue Squad, Main Street, Westernport, MD 21562.
