ARDIS NUTTER
OAKLAND - Ardis Nutter, age 82, formerly of Pittsburgh, died on Monday, June 7, 1999, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home in Grantsville.
She was born July 20, 1916, in Wallace, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Clarence W. Nutter and Stella (Hawker) Nutter.
Miss Nutter was a veteran of World War II and was a retired administrative clerk, having worked for the Navy Finance Center in Washington, D.C.
She is survived by her nephew, Tom Bittinger, Oakland; two nieces, Nancy Willoughby, Louisville, Ky., and Betty Evans, Cockeysville; also by her brother-in-law, Harold "Ben" Bittinger, Oakland.
A service will be conducted at the Durst Funeral Home in Oakland on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Watkins officiating.
Graveside services and interment will be in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery, Shinnston, W.Va., on Friday at 1 p.m.
CATHERINE E. NYCUM
CUMBERLAND - Catherine Elizabeth Nycum, 64, of Cumberland, died Wednesday at Memorial Hospital.
Born July 29, 1934, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Theodore and Catherine (Kemp) Gray. She was preceded in death by one son, Howard Wayne Jefferson; and nine brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Nycum was a homemaker. She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and the 700 Club.
Surviving are her former husband, George Nycum; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Oates and husband, Marshall, Debra Mulligan; one son, Howard Jefferson and wife, Jeanna; three sisters, Jeannette Stitcher, Dorothy Gray, Rita Cook; five grandchildren, Tammy Kitzmiller, Marshall Warren Oates, all of Cumberland, Donald Lee Izzett Jr., Theresa Jefferson and Gerald Jefferson, both of Cumberland; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted on Thursday at 8:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church on Friday at 9:30 a.m. with Fr. Vernon Busch, O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant.
Interment will be in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Marshall Oates Sr., Marshall Warren Oates, John Barnett, Bill Hare, Bill Dorsey and Tim Savercool.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society Brain Tumor Research.
MARY K. PHILLIPS
ELKTON - Mary Katherine Miller Phillips, 69, of Elkton, died Jan. 6, 1999, of heart failure.
Mrs. Phillips was born Nov. 12, 1929, in Grantsville.
She was a certified teacher and had accepted several teaching positions in Cecil and Worcester counties. Mrs. Phillips was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Worcester Chapter 102 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Snow Hill. She was active in school functions as well as in Boy and Girl Scout activities.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by a daughter, Kathy P. Faries, son-in-law, Gary Faries, Elkton; son, Mark B. Phillips, Bear, Del.; granddaughters, Meredith Faries, Elkton, and Carley Phillips, Watertown, Conn; grandson, John Faries II, Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers, W. Dale Miller, Short Gap, W.Va., and J. Richard Miller, Frostburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold G. Phillips; and her parents, Ruth Edna and Nevin J. Miller.
A private service was held on Jan. 9 at the Gee Funeral Home, Elkton.

CARL T. NORRIS
HANCOCK - Carl T. Norris, 58, of West High Street, Hancock, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at his home.
Born Oct. 8, 1940, in Cumberland, he is the son of S. Beatrice (Bowman) Norris of Little Orleans, Md., and the late Donald M. Norris. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Marvin "Buddy" Norris.
Mr. Norris was the owner of the Norris Building, Inc., in Hancock. He was very active in Community Affairs in the Hancock and Little Orleans areas. He was a 1959 graduate of Flintstone High School.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Phyllis E. (Seavolt) Norris of Little Orleans; one daughter, Valerie Swain and husband Denny, of Hancock; two sons, Gregory Norris and wife Pam of Little Orleans; Patrick Norris and wife Becky of Little Orleans; his companion, Barbara "Bobbi" Smith of Hancock; and her children, Jackie Younker of Mercersburg, Pa.; Adeline Smith of Hancock; and Kim Smith of Hagerstown; one sister, Norma Jean VonLevenberger of Tampa, FL; six grandchildren, Ashley and Todd Norris; Beth and Deidre Swain; Andy and Rachel Norris; and Adam and Kyle Younker. Also a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church one prior to the service on Friday. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open from 11 to 9 p.m. on Thursday.
Services will be held Friday September 3 at the Piney Plains United Methodist Church, Little Orleans, with the Rev. W. Scott Summers officiating.
Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

DORIS V. MARTIN
CUMBERLAND - Doris Virginia Martin, 77, of 235 Paca St., Queen City Towers, Cumberland, and of the Lions Manor Nursing Home for the past three months, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at the nursing home.
Born June 16, 1922, in Ellerslie, she was the daughter of the late James E. See and the late Helen (Griffey) See. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Oscar Martin; and a sister, Polly Hawkins.
Mrs. Martin was a former van driver for Meals on Wheels in the Mount Savage area, and was a seamstress.
Surviving are a son, James E. Martin, Lancaster, Pa.; a granddaughter, Heather Carter, California; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Riggleman, Ellerslie.
Mrs. Martin's wishes were that she be cremated at the Cumberland Crematory.
A gathering of friends will be held at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 7 to 8 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Rebecca Vardiman, pastor of the Ellerslie United Methodist Church, officiating.
ALICE D. MARTIN
CUMBERLAND - Alice D. Martin, 84, of Cumberland, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice Unit.
Born Jan. 10, 1915, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late J. Roy and Ellen (Morgan) Martin.
Miss Martin was retired from Potomac Edison, Cumberland. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland, and the church Sodality. She was a 1934 graduate of Girls Central High School.
Surviving are one aunt, Julia Pariser and husband, Rodney, Cumberland; two cousins, Thomas E. Martin and wife, Alice, Hagerstown, and Carole M. Abbott and husband, John, Akron, Ohio; and her best friend of almost 50 years, Patricia C. Helmstetter, LaVale, and her children and their families, J. Dennis Helmstetter, Pittsburgh, Pa., Eileen Luttrell, Smithsburg, Kevin J. Helmstetter, Cumberland, and her Goddaughter, Ellen M. Helmstetter, Frederick. They will forever mourn her loss.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Rosary will be recited Friday at 8:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Saturday at 11 a.m. with Father John J. Carney officiating.
Interment will be in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
The family requests contributions be made to the Hospice Unit at Sacred Heart Hospital, 900 Seton Drive, Cumberland, MD 21502.
