CUMBERLAND - Grace M. Snider, 87, formerly of Glen Ridge, N.J., died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at the Cumberland Nursing Center.
Born July 29, 1912, in New Brunswick, N.J., she was the daughter of the late George and Margaret McLaughlin. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Snider Sr.; and one sister, Nancy McElroy.
Surviving are one daughter, Margaret (Brooks) Foristall and husband Lynn, Chatham, N.J.; two sons, Dr. Richard L. Snider Jr. and wife Margy, Cumberland, and George Snider and wife Jean, Cedar Grove, N.J.; 10 grandchildren, Bob Brooks and wife Nancy, Betsy (Brooks) and husband Paul, Beth Ann (Snider) and husband Paul, Tracy Snider and husband Barney, Greg Snider, Stacey (Snider) and husband Steve, and George Snider; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Carole Manville and husband Keith, Beaumont, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are being made by the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland.
Services will be held at the Shook Cedar Grove Funeral Home, Cedar Grove, N.J.
MARY H. ROWE
CUMBERLAND - Mary Henrietta Rowe, 83, of 12809 Mason Road, N.E., Cumberland, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 13, 1915, in Belle Grove, she was the daughter of the late James T. Trail and the late Amanda Elizabeth (Swain) Trail. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Rowe, in 1987; seven brothers; and one sister.
Mrs. Rowe was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, the church choir, and the Union Grove Homemakers Club.
Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Haines and husband, John L., Flintstone; a son, James Thomas Rowe and wife, Linda, R.F.D. #1, Ridgeley, W.Va.; a sister, Evelyn "Kit" Heavner, Flintstone; five grandchildren, John L. Haines Jr., Centreville, Md., Brenda Hager and husband, Terry, Flintstone, Kenneth B. Haines and wife, Karen, Flintstone, James Rowe and wife, Jennifer, Cumberland, and Mark Rowe and wife, Heather, Ridgeley; six great-grandchildren, Jennifer Haines, John Haines III, Travis Rowe, Jordan Rowe, Kendra Haines and Katherine Haines; two step-grandchildren, Scott Hager and Heather Hager; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Ray Rogers officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Terry L. Hager, John L. Haines Jr., Kenneth B. Haines, James O. Rowe, Mark T. Rowe and John L. Haines III.
VIRGINIA L. STEELE
CATONSVILLE - Virginia Lee Steele, 69, formerly of Lonaconing and Baltimore, died Nov. 6, 1999, at Holmes Regional Medical Center, Palm Bay, Fla.
Surviving are one son, Gary Teeter, Catonsville; a daughter, Barbara Abrams, Austin, Texas; a sister, Alma Vollmerhausen, Cumberland; two brothers, James Steele, Willard, Mont., and Ronald Steele, Cumberland; three granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Catonsville, on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 12:30 p.m.
Arrangements are by the Sterling-Ashton-Schwab Funeral Home, Catonsville.

CORAM, Long Island, N.Y. - Thomas H. Smith Jr., 59, of Coram, formerly of Cumberland, Md., died suddenly Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in Coram.
Mr. Smith was the son of Thomas H. Smith Sr., Rochester, and Alpharetta Smith, Cumberland.
Services will be held at the Arbordale Funeral Home, 71 Beach Lane, Coram, Thursday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart Fund of Cumberland, Md., or Coram, N.Y.
CHARLES F. YATES, SR.
CUMBERLAND - Charles Franklin "Hawk" Yates, Sr., 80, of 219 Carroll St., Cumberland, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 15, 1919, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Jesse James Yates and Emmaline (Smith) Yates.
Mr. Yates, Sr., was a retired employee of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. He was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Fulton Myers Post 153 American Legion, Aubrey and Robert Stewart Post 5957 VFW, Piedmont, W.Va., and was an Army/Air Force veteran of World War II.
Surviving are a wife, Ethel L. (Rhodes) Yates, Cumberland; three sons, Charles F. Yates, Jr., Fla., John J. (Perkey) Yates and wife, Sherry, Oldtown, Franklin C. Yates, Cumberland; one grandson, John J. "P.J." Yates, Jr., Cumberland; two granddaughters, Bridget Ritchie, Cumberland, and Kristal Yates, Silver Spring; two great-granddaughters, Maria Ritchie and Carrie Yates; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m.
Mr. Yates cremated remains will be interred in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
ROBERT P. RITZ
SWANTON - Robert P. Ritz, 51, of Savage River Road, Swanton, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Dec. 18, 1947, in Naples, Italy, he was the son of Anna (Fagula) Ritz and the late Patsy S. Ritz.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca (Phares) Ritz, Swanton; and daughter, Rachael N. Ritz Dolly, Ridgeley, W.Va.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 21 years and was a Vietnam veteran. He was credited with three Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, Congressional Medal of Honor, Vietnamese Gallantry Cross, National Defense Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member of the Black Hawk Tribe 131, Westernport, and loved the outdoors enjoying hunting and fishing.
Friends will be received at the Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, W.Va., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Pete Miller officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Creegan, James Minogue, Dale Eaton, Donald Moon, Robert Mullen and Ronald Cook.
Donations may be made to the hospice of the donor's choice.
ELIZABETH SMITH
CUMBERLAND - Elizabeth Rebecca Smith, 77, formerly of Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, in Garrett Memorial Hospital.
Born on Feb. 18, 1922, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late James Ed and Ella (Jackson) Smith. She was also preceded in death by three brothers.
Ms. Smith was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland, a graduate of Fort Hill High School, a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge 271, Cumberland, and member of the Sodality.
Survivors are sisters, Ida V. Cox, of Villa Rica, Ga., Theresa Thomas, of Nashville, Tenn., Frances D. Shaffer, of Cumberland, and Vernice Simmons, of Oakland; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted in the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, on Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Thomas R. Bevan, officiating.
Interment will follow.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale.
