WILLIAM R. MAFFETT
William R. "Bill" Maffett, 71, Oakland, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Sept. 13, 1928, in Altoona, Pa., he was a son of the late Hugh D. and Sylvia R. (Fink) Maffett. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Alan Lee Maffett, in 1959.
He was a former member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Mtn. Lake Park, and also attended the Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church.
For nearly 20 years, he and his brother were partners in a dairy and poultry farm. He was also a master welder and metal worker who rebuilt and designed new farm equipment and implements.
He was also involved in the mining industry. He was a member UMWA District 31, Local 1289, and was first employed at North Branch Mine in Bayard, W.Va. He was also a member of the mine rescue team, earned special recognition for his attendance record, and was recognized for his involvement in UMWA-BCOA loabor contracts. He later drove tractor-trailer rigs for both Wagner Trucking and Peters Fuel.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Phyllis A. (Barncord) Maffett; three sons, Nevin Ray Maffett, Westminster, Neil Roy Maffett, Lynchburg, Va., and Mark Steven Maffett, Oakland; one daughter, Linda Susan Eisentrout, Augusta, W.Va.; one sister, Gloria J. Lewis, Jonesboro, Tenn.; one brother, Hugh F. "Jay" Maffett, Oakland; and eight grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday. A service will be conducted at the Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church on Saturday, May 7, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dennis Leatherman officiating. Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.
EDWARD W. KIFER
Edward William Kifer, 68, Aurora, W.Va., died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Jan. 26, 1932, in Barnum, W.Va., he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jesse J. Kifer, and an adopted son of the late Daniel F. and Virginia H. Kifer. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, William "Scoutch," James, and David Kifer.
He was retired from International Paper Company.
Survivors include one brother, Melvin E. Kifer, Wisconsin, and numerous nieces and nephews, several of whom live in the Aurora and Oakland areas.
Friends were received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, where a service was conducted Tuesday, June 20, with the Rev. Stanley Waybright officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
ALTA J. FRIEND
Alta Josephine Friend, 84, Friendsville, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Memorial Hospital Hospice, Cumberland.
Born Feb. 22, 1916, in Accident, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Andrew and Catherine (Schroyer) Fazenbaker. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James George Friend, on March 26, 1992.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Accident, and was a homemaker.
Surviving are two sons, Garry Richard Friend, Friendsville, and James Rickey Friend, Cumberland; one daughter, Shirley Audrey Metheny, Friendsville; two brothers, Jonas "Ranzy" Fazenbaker, Accident, and Belvin Fazenbaker, Deer Park; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville. A service was conducted at the Grace Lutheran Church, Friendsville, on Tuesday, June 20, with the Rev. Ross Glotfelty officiating. Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery.

H. HOMER MELLOTT
H. Homer Mellott, 74, Oakland, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Oct. 8, 1925, in Oakland, he was the son of the late Zenas L. and Della (Beeghley) Mellott.
He was a farmer and a retired homebuilder.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalie (Strayer) Mellott; one son, Paul H. Mellott, Battlecreek, Mich.; one daughter, Elizabeth Hebb, Oakland; one sister, Beulah Ruth Snyder, Oakland; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted Monday, June 19, with the Rev. Gail Hixon and the Rev. Ross Glotfelty officiating. Interment was in the Sang Run Cemetery.
WILLIAM H. SPIKER
William H. Spiker, 85, Pompano Beach, Fla., formerly of Oakland, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at the North Broward Medical Center, Pompano Beach.
Born Oct. 24, 1914, in Oakland, he was the son of the late John G. D. and Mary C. (Tucker) Spiker. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Edna E. (Teets) Spiker.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was a member of Proctor Kildow Post 71 American Legion, Oakland; Terra Alta Lodge 1395, Loyal Order of the Moose; and a retired member of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are two sons, Wiliam D. Spiker, Fort Lauderdale, and John C. Spiker, Severn; three grand-children; and one great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, June 23, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Neil Parsons officiating. Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans organizations in southern Garrett County.
PAUL W. LEWIS
Paul W. Lewis, 81, Oakland, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born July 17, 1918, in West Virginia, he was a son of the late Bruce and Maggie (Sines) Lewis. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Pansy J. (Bell) Lewis, in 1998.
He was a former employee of Grimm Lumber Company and the town of Oakland's streets department. He was also a retired coal miner.
Survivors include three daughters, Janice M. Lewis and Velma M. Beckman, both of Mtn. Lake Park, and Violet L. Alexander, Corinth, W.Va.; one son, Paul J. Lewis, Oakland; three sisters, Ruby Moyer, Kingwood, W.Va., Lydia Atkinson, Terra Alta, W.Va., and Ruth Lloyd, Deer Park; one brother, Dailey Lewis, Ohio;12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted Monday, June 19, with the Rev. William Martin officiating. Interment was in the Ashby Cemetery.
MARGARET S. ALEXANDER
Margaret Susan Alexander, 98, Accident, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.
Born July 27, 1901, in Bittinger, she was a daughter of the late Willard and Catherine (Klotz) Frickey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl W. Alexander, and one son, Emerson Alexander.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Accident, and was a homemaker.
Surviving are one son, Richard Alexander, Accident; one daughter, Marie Baird, Pittsburgh; two sisters, Sara Alexander, Accident, and Rose Rahenhorst, Vero Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grand-children.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted Sunday, June 18, with the Rev. Roland E. Nairn III officiating. Interment was in the Addison (Pa.) Cemetery.

CHARLES I. SWAUGER
Charles Irvin "Bud" Swauger, 87, Grantsville, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Memorial Hospital Hospice, Cumberland.
Born April 2, 1913, at New Germany, near Grantsville, he was a son of the late Richard and Mary Catherine (Spiker) Swauger. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Walter; four sisters, Edna, Jane, Rella, and Virginia; and one granddaughter.
He was employed as a stone mason for Michael Masonry for 28 years, a member of Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren, Woodmen of the World, and Mt. Top Chapter of VFW, Oakland. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served for three years under General Patton. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Genevieve "Jenny" (Guthrie) Swauger; four daughters, Carol Tice, Betty Jo Wiley, and Marilyn Sue Warnick, all of Grantsville, and Delma Murray, Meyersdale, Pa.; one sister, Helena "Sue" Maust, Meyersdale; eight grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville. A memorial service was conducted earlier today, June 22, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Ketterman and the Rev. Ross Glotfelty officiating. Full military honors were accorded at the cemetery.

DARIUS R. FIKE
Darius Ruben "Buzz" Fike, 78, Accident, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Nov. 9, 1921, in Friendsville, he was a son of the late Wesley Austin and Irene Ruth (VanSickle) Fike. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lavonne Sharlene.
He was a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Accident, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Mt. Top Chapter 29, Disabled American Veterans, Oakland.
Survivors include his wife of 53, Ruth Iretha (Deal) Fike, whom he married Feb. 15, 1947; three brothers, Troy R. Fike, Friendsville, James Fike, Accident, and Ronald Fike, Florida; and two sisters, Amy Nedrow, Baltimore, and Glenna Reese, Friendsville.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, McHenry, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, June 23, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Roland E. Nairn III officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.

MARY L. THOMAS
Mary Louise Thomas, 92, Baltimore, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Baltimore.
She was born in Garrett County, was reared in Grafton, W.Va., and lived for many years in Roland Park.
She was a graduate of Grafton High School. She received her bachelor's degree from Fairmont (W.Va.) State College and her master's degree from West Virginia University. She did graduate work at the University of Maryland and Columbia, Duke, and Northwestern universities.
She retired in 1975 from the University of Baltimore, where she taught English. She also taught in Baltimore and Baltimore County public schools, and taught adult education programs in Howard and Baltimore counties.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the church's women's group. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Woman's Club of Roland Park.
A funeral service was conducted June 19 in Grafton.
