MICHAEL W. SOWERS
CUMBERLAND - Michael Whalen Sowers, 47, of Cumberland, died July 1, 1999, at his residence.
Born Nov. 4, 1951, in Cumberland, he was the son of V. Louise (Keistler) Sowers, Cumberland, and the late Charles F. Sowers.
He was a graduate of Allegany High School.
Mr. Sowers had been self employed in sales.
In addition to his mother, he is also survived by his brother, Charles F. Sowers Jr. and wife, Linda, Fairfax; an aunt, Carol Sowers, Monroeville, Pa.; and an uncle, James Raynolds, St. Paul, Minn.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Milton Hipsley as celebrant.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
GEORGE B. STATLER
CUMBERLAND - George B. Statler, 85, of Allegany County Nursing Home, Cumberland, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at the nursing home.
Born Dec. 16, 1913, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Bessie B. (Chaney) Statler. He was also preceded in death by four brothers.
Mr. Statler was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a 1934 graduate of Pennsylvania Avenue High School, a board member for the Allegany County Genealogical Society, and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Louise L. Statler; three stepdaughters, Shirley L. Hayden, Rochester, N.Y., Carole L. Pellegrino, Lake Mary, Fla., Helen E. Saville, Rock Hill, S.C.; one brother, Charles E. Statler, LaVale; ten step-grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren.
At Mr. Statler's request, his body was cremated.
A memorial service will be conducted at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Monday at 11 a.m. with the Pastor Bob Cook officiating. Friends will be received on hour prior to services at the funeral home. His cremains will be interred at Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
WILLIAM LEE STEPHENS
CUMBERLAND - William Lee Stephens, 60, of 9 N. Chase St., Cumberland, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 16, 1999.
Born Aug. 22, 1938, in Cumberland, he was the son of William H. Stephens and Helen (Gates) Stephens of Cumberland. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Elaine Stephens and Gary Eugene Stephens.
Bill lived a full and rich life. He served in the United States Army, was an avid reader, and was dedicated to the arts. Our community benefited from his many artistic talents through his mosaic picture creations, theatrical productions, and his famous catering business.
Bill was the first African-American to attend and graduate from LaSalle High School. He received his bachelors and masters degrees from the Frostburg State Teachers College. A devoted educator, he taught in Pittsburgh, Pa., Columbia, Md., and in Baltimore, Md., at Lake Clifton, the largest high school in the nation. Upon returning to Cumberland, he taught at Mount Savage, SS. Peter & Paul, and for 19 years at Fort Hill High School.
His family and friends cherished Bill and feel enriched for having known him.
Surviving besides his parents are a sister, Bette J. Stephens, Gaithersburg; his companion of 28 years, James Cumiskey, Cumberland. Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A Litany for the Departed will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. with Father Robert Powell officiating.
A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Father Robert Powell officiating.
Interment of his cremated remains will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
HAZEL M. ROBERTSON
FROSTBURG - Hazel Mae Robertson, 88, of 154 Wood St., Frostburg, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital. She was a wonderful, kind, and loving mother, wife, and grandmother.
Born Oct. 11, 1911, in Avilton, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Alice (Rhoda) Clay. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer Robertson; four brothers, Edgar, Oscar, Lawrence, and Paul Chaney; and four sisters, Violet Chaney, Marie Bennett, Ruth Crowe, and Vera Chaney.
Mrs. Robertson was formerly employed in the spinning dept. at the Celanese Fibers Corporation and was a former waitress of the Tally-Ho Restaurant, Frostburg. She was a member of the Frostburg Chapter 221Women of the Moose, Farrady Unit 24 American Legion Auxiliary, and a lifelong member of the Brethren Faith. She was a very active member of the Frostburg Church of the Brethren where she previously taught Sunday school, served in the choir, served as financial secretary and Sunday school secretary, and was a member of Women Fellowship.
Surviving are a son, Robert H. Robertson and wife, Misty, Bel Air; two grandsons, Aaron Labutka, Cumberland, and Adam Labutka, Bel Air; a brother, the Rev. Connell Chaney, Grantsville; a sister, Naomi Edsall, Frostburg; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rick Riley, officiating.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Dallas Chaney, Coy Chaney, Olin Wilhelm, Walter Sonnenberg, Adam Labutka, Aaron Labutka, Roy Diehl, and Steve Folk.

OLIVE R. ROBESON
FROSTBURG - Olive R. Robeson, 93, of Frostburg Heights Apartments, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Sept. 25, 1906, in Avilton, she was the daughter of the late Otho S. and Linnie (Weitzell) Fike. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis O. Robeson; one daughter, Anna Ruth Winfield; three grandchildren, David Robeson, Diana (Robeson) Rayman, and Robert "Rusty" Robeson; and one brother, Ray Fike.
Mrs. Robeson was a member of the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are six sons, James R. Robeson and wife Beatrice, Hockessin, Del., Robert O. Robeson and wife Elizabeth, Cumberland, John H. Robeson and wife Elsie, Finzel, Joseph W. Robeson and wife Lorraine, Hagerstown, Donald E. Robeson and wife Mary, Baltimore, and Richard E. Robeson and special friend Joan, Bel Air; two daughters, Ina Lee Donius and husband "Pete", Frostburg, and Rosemary J. Grimes, Frostburg; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Fike, Frostburg, and Harold Fike, Avilton; and two sisters, Mildred Bell, Somerset, Ohio, and Rose Wilhelm, Avilton.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating, assisted by Mrs. Robeson's son, Joseph W. Robeson.
Interment will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery, Long Stretch.
Pallbearers, all grandchildren, will be Dennis Robeson, Scott Robeson, Edward Winfield, Stephen Donius, Keith Robeson and Vincent Robeson. Honorary pallbearers, all grandchildren, will be Gary Donius, Rick Hopkins, Sally Donius, Wally Robeson, Tina Robeson, and Mike Robeson.

WILLIAM E. ROBEY
CUMBERLAND - William Edward Robey, 43, of 420 Winmer St., Cumberland, died suddenly at his home on Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999.
Born Dec. 25, 1955, in Cumberland, he was the son of August Victor Robey, Cumberland, and the late Dorothy Christine (Widdows) Robey, who died Aug. 10, 1995.
Mr. Robey was a retired machinist helper for the CSX Railroad.
Surviving in addition to his father are: a son, Todd Robey and fiancee, Michelle Barkley, Cresaptown; two grandchildren, Britney and Sean Robey; two brothers, Edward W. Robey and wife, Brenda, Cumberland, Robert L. Robey and wife, Berkeley, Cumberland; several nieces and nephews; a cousin, George Lippold and wife, Linda, Houston, Texas; and a special friend, Diane Melvin and family.
Mr. Robey's remains were cremated at The Cumberland Crematory.
A memorial service will be conducted at Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Wayne R. Turner officiating.
