ERKLE J. SULKOWSKI
FROSTBURG - Erkle J. Sulkowski, 84, of the Frostburg Village Nursing Home, formerly of McMullen Highway, Rawlings, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at the nursing home.
Born March 30, 1915, in Hot Springs, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha Mae (Simmons) Birch. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Sulkowski, in August 1988; and one brother, Joseph Curtis.
Mrs. Sulkowski was a member of the Rivers of Life Christian Fellowship Church in McCoole.
Surviving are two sons, Jim Sulkowski and wife Diane, Rawlings, and Larry Sulkowski, Cumberland; one sister, Catherine Pilger, Patchouge, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Melissa; and beloved friend, Floyd Shepherd, Rawlings.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m. with Pastor Patrick Brett officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
JOHN V. RAFTER
CUMBERLAND - John Vernon Rafter, 73, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at his residence.
Born Nov. 18, 1925, in Warren, Ohio, he was the son of the late John "Jack" Van Rafter and Doris (Gough) Westfall. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Louise (Hammersmith) Rafter.
Mr. Rafter was a retired auditor for the former department of Health, Education and Welfare. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cumberland.
Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn L. Koudry and husband, Alex, Silver Spring; one son, John T. Rafter, Ashburn, Va.; one sister, Dixie R. Thompson, Cumberland; three grandchildren, John V. Rafter, Robert C. Rafter, both of Ashburn, and Jillian L. Koudry, Silver Spring.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Dr. O. Morton Harris Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
LELA ETHEL STAGGS
LAVALE - Lela Ethel (Alt) Staggs, 96, of LaVale, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in Devlin Manor Nursing Home.
She was born on Sept. 4, 1902, in Upper Tract, W.Va., the daughter of the late Charles and Rebecca Margaret (Judy) Harrison. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Dorothy Evan Niner, Myrtle Yokum, Goldie Simmons, Nellie Mason and Mayme Carskadon; and four brothers, Edgar Alt, Homer Alt, Fred Alt and Russell Alt.
Mrs. Staggs was a member of the LaVale Baptist Church. She served as a trustee of the church, and had worked out of her home as a self-employed seamstress.
Surviving are her daughter, Lela Virginia Jewell, Queen City Towers, Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Staggs was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Doug Strother officiating.
Interment will follow in the Mineral Baptist Church Cemetery.
COLLEEN F. YODER
STREET - Colleen Faye Yoder, 67, of Street, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at the St. Joseph Medical Center, Towson.
Born Jan. 1, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Hazel (Beachy) Yoder.
Mrs. Yoder was born of Amish and Mennonite heritage in Grantsville. She was a 1949 graduate of Allegany High School in Cumberland and had been a resident of Harford County for over 40 years. She began her employment at the Whiteford Pharmacy when they opened in 1962 and continued until her retirement in 1996. Mrs. Yoder was a member of the Emory United Methodist Church, Street. She enjoyed gardening, photography, spending time with her family, and collecting antiques and Amish artifacts.
Surviving are her husband, Edward D. Yoder. They observed their 49th wedding anniversary on Dec. 2, 1999. Also surviving are one daughter, Debra Yoder Harkins, Whiteford; one son-in-law, James M. Harkins, Harford County Executive; two granddaughters, Andrea R. Harkins and Stephanie N. Harkins, both of Whiteford; two brothers, Olin Yoder, Linthicum, and Gary Yoder, McHenry; and one sister, Mary Yoder O'Brien, Alexandria, Va.
Friends will be received at the Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main St., Delta, Pa., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Emory United Methodist Church, Route 543 and Emory Church Road, Street, on Monday at 11 a.m. with her pastor, the Rev. Michael P. Fauconnet officiating.
Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

THELMA R. WEED
CUMBERLAND - Thelma Rachael Weed, 83, of 1008 Frederick St., Cumberland, passed away at her home on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999.
Born in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., on April 8, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Dalton Lepley and the late Cora (McCoy) Lepley. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
She was a former employee of the Celanese Corporation and retired from I.R.C. Fibers in Painesville, Ohio. She was a Protestant by faith.
She is survived by her husband, Walter T. Weed; three sons, Thomas Valentine and wife, Jacklyn, Bedford, Pa., Walter Weed Jr. and wife, Dena, Painesville, Virgle Weed and wife, Debbie, Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Carol Valentine Showalter and husband, Dewey, Everett, Pa., Shirley Weed Hess, Fort Myers, Fla.; one brother, Lester Lepley, Cumberland; two sisters, Helen Beal and Ellen Keel, both of Geneva, Ohio; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Weed was cremated at the Cumberland Crematory.
Services will be scheduled at a later date.

EARLE W. RAILEY SR.
OAKLAND - Earle William Railey Sr., 83, of Oakland, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born May 2, 1916, in McHenry, he was a son of the late Charles M. Railey and Edith (Merrill) Railey. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Pauline (Friend) Railey, in 1998.
Mr. Railey was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of Proctor Kildow Post 71 American Legion and Lodge 2481 BPOE.
He is survived by two sons, Earle W. Railey Jr. and Douglas R. Railey, both of Oakland; two daughters, Paula J. Upole, Oakland, and Pamela R. Mallow, Fairmont, W.Va.; three brothers, James L. Railey and Robert E. Railey, both of Oakland, and Charles "Bud" Railey, Bridgeport, W.Va.; one sister, Marjorie R. Hamill, Oakland; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in the Sang Run Cemetery.
