JOHN J. STAKEM
FROSTBURG - John Joseph Stakem, 74, of 100 Honeysuckle Lane, Frostburg, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born March 4, 1925, in Midland, he was a son of the late John Joseph Stakem and Annie (Byrnes) Stakem. Also preceding him in death are a brother, Thomas P. Stakem; and a sister, Margaret Mills.
Mr. Stakem was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland, the Frostburg Moose Lodge #348, and Farrady Post #24 American Legion, Frostburg. He was retired from the Maryland State Highway Administration, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was the former owner of Jack & Ginny's Restaurant, Frostburg, until 1979.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Mae "Ginny" (Schramm) Stakem; a daughter, Julie Ann Stakem, and friend, Delbert Fraley, Frostburg; two stepsons, Roy C. Wilhelm and wife, Pam, and son, Brandon Grant, Savage River, and Craig F. Wilhelm, and fiancee Lisa Ritchie, and daughter, Autumn Ritchie, Frostburg; a sister, Pauline O'Brien, Frostburg Village Nursing Home, and husband, Daniel O'Brien; a brother-in-law, Charles Schramm, and wife, Velma, Rock Hill, S.C. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Paula James, Lawrence Mills, Krista Lee, Lisa Wilson; great-nieces and nephews, Maggie Mills, Colin Mills, Caitlin Mills, Kacie Lee, Kelsey Lee, Heather Wilson, Wade Wilson; four stepgrandchildren, Roy F. Wilhelm, Michelle Benedetto, Tonya Wilhelm and Tia Welhelm; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, Tuesday, April 27, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday, April 28, 1999, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, April 29, 1999, at 9 a.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland, with Father Ed Hendricks, Celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Midland.
A Christian Wake Service will be held Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at 7:30 p.m., with Sister Joan Maenner OSF, Pastoral Life Director.
Frostburg Moose Lodge #348 will hold a memorial service Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at 7:15 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Delbert Fraley, Dave Pennington, Larry Mills, James Ricker, Tom Gordon and Charles Schramm.
Memorial donations in Mr. Stakem's memory may be made to Johns Hopkins Hospital, Oncology Department, 600 N. Wolfe St., Baltimore, MD 21287, or to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Box 1, Midland, MD 21542.
ETHEL E. WINDLE
WESTERNPORT - Ethel E. Windle, 99, formerly of Luke, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Moran Manor Nursing Home.
Born June 11, 1900, at New Creek, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late David Mangold and Lena Maphis Mangold. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lee D. Windle, and a brother, Howard Mangold.
Mrs. Windle was a member of Piedmont Presbyterian Church and the Westernport Senior Citizens.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Betty Goodman and husband, Phillip, of Great Neck, N.Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Pansy McIntyre and husband, Milton, of Williamsport, and Verna Bonnett, San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren, William M. Goodman, Linda A. Goodman, Deborah L. Goodman, and Jenny L. Bowden, and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Fredlock Funeral Home, Pidmont, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harry Coleman, officiating.
Interment will follow in Philos Cemetery, Westernport.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 5 Public Square, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
NELSON THOMASSON III
MOUNTAIN LAKE PARK - Nelson Thomasson III, 86, of 106 H Street, Mountain Lake Park, died Friday at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born April 24, 1913, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of the late Nelson Thomasson Jr. and Indie (Gardiner) Thomasson.
Mr. Thomasson was a retired executive of the Scott Paper Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Cantrelle) Thomasson.
Surviving are two daughters, Indie G. Cather, Alexandria, Va.; Mary Lee Nelson, Chino Valley, Ariz.; one son, Nelson Thomasson IV, Mountain Lake Park; one brother, Norton Thomasson, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. Matthews Episcopal Church on Sunday with the Rev. Chip Lee officiating. Interment will be private.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland.
WALTER L. SCHNEIDER
HANCOCK - Walter Leon Schneider, 80, of Hancock, formerly of Little Orleans, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Mr. Schneider was born in Springfield, on Dec. 9, 1918. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dianne Vivian (Kindred) Schneider, Aug. 15, 1996.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his son, Jerry Schneider, Greenville, RI.; four step-sons, James Rutherford, Frankfort, Germany, Tom Rutherford, Gunnison, Colo., Don Rutherford, Seattle, WA., and Colin Rutherford, Reno, Nevada; two sisters, Ayleen Schrandt, San Diego, Calif., and Lillie Carusoe, Germantown; and one grandson, Jovin Schneider, Greenville, RI.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Monday from 1:30 to 2 p.m.
The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich, officiating.
Interment will be private.
ALICE F. RICHMOND
CUMBERLAND - Alice F. Richmond, 85, of Cumberland, formerly of Connellsville, Pa., died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born Dec. 11, 1913, in Glassport, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Phillip and Josephine (Perston) McCarthy. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Richmond, on June 22, 1998.
Surviving are a son, John C. Richmond Jr. and wife Yolanda, Cumberland; two grandchildren, Michael Richmond, Manassas, Va., and Leah Grove, Pittsburgh; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Anne Alexander, Connellsville, Pa.; and two half sisters, Beulah Freed, Connellsville, and Maude Phillips, Waynesburg, Pa.
At Mrs. Richmond's request, there will be no public visitation.
Memorial services will be conducted at a later date.
Interment will be in the LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, Pa.
The Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, LaVale, is in charge of arrangements.
MARY E. STEWART
CUMBERLAND - Mary Eleanor Stewart, 82, of Columbia Street, Cumberland, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 5, 1916, in Bedford Valley, Pa., the daughter of the late Charles Fisher and Olive (Zembower) Fisher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Stewart, who died Dec. 25, 1998.
Mrs. Stewart was a member of Elliott Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Charles R. Stewart, Cumberland; a daughter, Mary Jo Mooney and husband, Hugh, Perris, Calif.; two granddaughters; one grandson; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Fisher and wife, Maude, Baltimore; a sister, Dorothy Stewart and husband, James, Hazen Road, Cumberland.
Friends will be received on Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home, Cumberland.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Tom Landaker and the Rev. Lloyd B. McCanna officiating.
Interment will be in the Centenary Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Bernard Averback, Donald Robinson, Kenneth Wilmont, Dean Hancox and Richard College.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be William Morgan, Jamie Stewart, George Ott Jr., Lee Brotemarkle and Dorcil Kline.
