SYLVIA M. SHEARS
CUMBERLAND - Sylvia M. Shears, 76, Booth Towers Apartments, Somerville Ave., Cumberland, died Friday, May 14, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on March 3, 1923, at Cresaptown, she was the daughter of the late Cecil W. McKenzie and Olive F. (Findlay) McKenzie. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret J. Shears; and one sister, Helen L. Nave.
Mrs. Shears was a member of the Memorial Heights Baptist Church. She also was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the D.A.V., Fort Washington Chapter #2.
She is survived by her husband, Junior Clifton "Cliff" Shears; one son, Taylor C. Shears and wife, Bonnie, Cumberland; two sisters, Betty L. Yommer, Baltimore, Janet C. Nelson and husband, Gerald, Cumberland; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Dennis A. Michael officiating.
Interment will be at Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery.
MILDRED E. WHITACRE
CUMBERLAND - Mildred Elizabeth Whitacre, 90, of 12 South Lee St., Cumberland, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at the Lions Manor Nursing Home.
Born Dec. 11, 1908, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late James Athey and Rosena (Scholfield) Athey. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Whitacre.
Mrs. Whitacre was the former owner of Whitacre's Gift Shop in downtown Cumberland.
Surviving are two nieces, Sharon L. Koscinski, Ellicott City, and Debbie Reckley, Muskegon, Mich.; and one nephew, Galen P. Corr, Cheverly.
A memorial service will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church on Washington Street on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Morton Harris officiating.
Interment of the ashes will be in the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery.
Arrangements have been made through the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland.
EFFIE E. TASKER
WESTERNPORT - Effie E. Tasker, 87, of Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport, formerly of 133 Main St., Westernport, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born on May 1, 1912, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of the late Marvel and Martha (Smith) Duckworth. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Allen "Buck" Tasker, in 1985, and one granddaughter.
Mrs. Tasker was Protestant by faith and a homemaker.
She leaves behind one son, Franklin A. Tasker and wife, Nancy, of Atlanta, Ga.; four daughters, Vera Duckworth, of Swanton, Faye E. Gray, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Doris Yoder and husband, Tom, of Crofton, Lorena E. Byrd and husband, James, of Dallas, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Reverends Robert and Louise Nealis, officiating.
Interment will be in Tichnell Cemetery, Chestnut Grove.
KENNETH L. SHEETS
CUMBERLAND - Kenneth L. Sheets, 79, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Mount Airy.
Born May 29, 1920, in Clarksburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Haught Coulson and Ruth Clingan Coulson. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael A. Sheets; one brother, Bert Sheets; and one sister, Maxine Coulson Eakins.
Mr. Sheets, known by his friends as "the Silver Fox," was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Maplehurst Country Club, VFW, B.P.O.E. Elks #63, and a 32 Mason of the Scottish Rite. He was a retired electrician and a member of IBEW Local 307. Mr. Sheets served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant stationed in New Guinea, Philippines and Australia during World War II.
Surviving are one son, David H. Sheets and wife Sheila, Ann Arbor, Mich.; four daughters, Barbara J. Mulvey and husband Michael, Salisbury, JoAnna L. Dove and husband Randy, Laurel, Lisa A. Capps and husband Tom, Glenelg, and Colleen D. Shaffer, Winchester, Va.; one brother, John Coulson and wife Ivorine, Bridgeport, W.Va.; and six grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave. on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Electrical Workers Union will have a memorial service on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted there Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John J. Duffus officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation in memory of their Dad be made to the donor's charity of choice.
HARRY D. WEBER
CUMBERLAND - Harry Derek Weber, 64, of Bowling Street, Cumberland, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice.
Born May 1, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry Harold Weber and the late Marie Weber Roeback. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Joseph Roeback; and stepmother, Bernice Weber.
Mr. Weber was the owner/operator of Weber's Dance Emporium, Cumberland. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Cumberland Knights of Columbus.
Surviving are longtime friend and companion, Vincent Snyder; one daughter, Tara Weber Hopkins, Detroit, Mich.; two sons, Derek and Marc Weber, both of Detroit; one stepsister, Margaret Brooks, Philadelphia; and one brother, Edward Weber, New Jersey.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Rosary will be recited on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Fr. Vance Pastorius, O.F.M., Cap., as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice Unit.
Pallbearers will be John Frick IV, Timothy Frick, Robert Hunt and Joseph Beard.
FLOYD E. SHEPHERD
RAWLINGS - Floyd E. Shepherd, 84, of Rawlings, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at his home.
Born Jan. 30, 1915, in Rawlings, he was the son of the late George E. and Hazel M. (Sharp) Shepherd. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Frances (Miers) Shepherd; two brothers, Louis and Donald Shepherd; and one sister, Marguerite Sindy.
Mr. Shepherd was retired from the Celanese Corporation, Cumberland, after 46 years of service. He attended Danville Community Church and was a member of SCAMPS -- Senior Citizens are Maryland Pace Setters.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Donnalley and husband Mark, Potomac Park; one son, Ronald Lee Shepherd and wife Delores, Rawlings; three sisters, Edith Wilson and husband Carl, Bowling Green, Ramona Heller and husband William, Winchester, Va., and Delores Fletcher, Bowling Green; two brothers, Vernon Shepherd and wife Mary, Bowling Green, and Harvey Shepherd and wife Lorene, Kingsport, Tenn.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and devoted friend, Lorna Michaels.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
