HERMAN W. WINTERS
MIDLOTHIAN - Herman William Winters, 80, of 20318 Pond Circle Road, Midlothian, died May 13, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born March 24, 1919, in Midlothian, he was the son of the late William H. and E. Luceile (Barnes) Winters. He also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ann Elizabeth Winters.

Mr. Winters was a retired owner-operator of the Win-Mar Mining and Construction Co., and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in Northern France and Central Europe. He was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Ribbon.

He was a member of the Trinity Assembly of God Church, Midlothian; a lifetime member of Farrady Post #24 American Legion, and served as reunion chaplain for his Army unit, Battery B, 567th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. His hobbies included vegetable gardening, wood and stone work, tinkering with automobiles, and staying busy playing horseshoes, hunting and fishing. He had been traveling to his home in Cocoa, Fla., for the past 20 years, where he spent the winter months.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Goldie M. (Skidmore) Winters; a daughter, Nellie M. Fisher and husband Larry, a son, Herman H. Winters and wife Lori A., four grandsons, Dennis L. Fisher, Richie L. Fisher, Nathan A. Winters and Andrew W. Winters, and a sister, Jane Elizabeth Werner, all of Midlothian; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, PA, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at Trinity Assembly of God Church on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jimmie Blair officiating. The body will be taken to the church at noon and will lie in state until services begin.

Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Farrady Post #24 Honor Guard.

JOHN P. THAYER
OAKLAND - John Phillips "Pip" Thayer, 81, of Palmetto, Fla., also of Morgantown, W.Va., formerly of Oakland, died Monday at his home in Morgantown.
Born in Oakland, on May 20, 1918, he was a son of the late Arthur Gorman Thayer and Esther (Hinebaugh) Thayer.

Mr. Thayer owned and operated Thayer's Barn on Deep Creek Lake for many years.

He was a former member of the Optimist Club, a former member of the Lion's Club, past president of the Oakland Golf Club, and was a charter member of Elks Lodge 2481.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline (Howell) Thayer; one son, James G. Thayer, and wife Sharon, of Morgantown; one daughter, Joyce Cornish, and husband Paul, of Rochester, N.Y.; one step-daughter, Jeannie Long, and husband Bud, also of Morgantown; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, in Oakland, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John A. Grant officiating

Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Family requests memorials take the form of contributions to the Morgantown Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

ERNEST T. SHOCKEY
LONACONING - Ernest Theodore Shockey, 61, of 805 Elsemere, Commerce Township, Mich., formerly of Lonaconing, died March 18, 1999, at Huron Valley Hospital, Commerce, Mich.
Born Dec. 21, 1937, in Lonaconing, he was a son of Agnes (Rankin) Shockey, Lonaconing, and the late John Henry Shockey.

Mr. Shockey was a graduate of Valley High School, Lonaconing. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #4156, White Lake Township, Mich., and a lifetime member of the Eagles, Waterford Township, Mich. Mr. Shockey was employed by General Motors. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Irma (Getson) Shockey; three brothers, James Shockey, Lonaconing, Paul Shockey, LaVale, Kenneth Shockey, Lorenza, Texas; and one sister, Sandra Livengood, Frostburg.

Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, on Monday, March 22, 1999, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Mortimore officiating.

Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.

Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard of the Cumberland area.

WILLARD J. ZIRK
CUMBERLAND - Willard J. Zirk, 80, of Bel Air, Cumberland, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at his residence.
Born Jan. 31, 1919, in Glebe, W.Va., he was the son of the late Seymour A. and Della L. (Whetzel) Zirk. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Walter Zirk, Garrett Zirk, Richard (Sloan) Zirk, Seymour Lee Zirk; and four sisters, Annie Merlin, Dicken, Virginia Evans, Fanny Pearl Swick, Ruth Mae Swick. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Zirk was a retired construction laborer and worked for the Western Maryland Railway. He was a Methodist by faith. He loved fishing and hunting. He was an honorary life member of Ridgeley Post #6452 V.F.W. and Ridgeley American Legion Post #136. He was a member of Cumberland Eagles Aerie #245, the Republican Club, Cumberland, and the Cresaptown Eagles.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Louise G. (Ganoe) Zirk; four daughters, Patricia J. Shaffer and husband, William, Cumberland, Peggy J. Glover and husband, James, Cumberland, Carol L. Tipton and husband, Joseph, Wiley Ford, W.Va., Sherry A. (Skidmore) Cook and husband, William, formerly of Cumberland, now residing in Ocean City; 10 grandchildren, Brian A. Shaffer, William C. Shaffer, Randall K. Shaffer, Kimberly R. Llewelyn and husband, David, Stephanie L. Dicken and husband, William, Liane R. Tipton, Tracy L. Tipton, Rhonda J. Ryan and husband, Carl, all of Cumberland, Lisa M. Martin and husband, Dave, Frederick, Angela C. Flanagan and husand, Vincent, Short Gap; seven great-grandchildren, Aaron, Ashley, Hunter, William, Bethanie, Brian and David; five sisters-in-law, Elva Shawlinsky, Cumberland, Audrey Zirk, Watertown, N.Y., Betty Zirk, Romney, W.Va., Susan Zirk, Ridgeley, Mildred Zirk, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cresaptown, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Mark C. Dill officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Western Maryland Health Care Team, 900 Seton Drive, Cumberland, MD 21502.

GLADYS P. SHOEMAKER
CUMBERLAND - Mary Gladys (Shaw) Platt Shoemaker, 95, formerly of the Cumberland Arms Apartments, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at the Lions Manor Nursing Home.

Born Feb. 24, 1904, at Irons Mountain, Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Eleanor (Robertson) Shaw. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Platt; her second husband, Peter Shoemaker; one son, Richard C. Platt; and five brothers.

Mrs. Shoemaker was a member of the Central Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include two sons, Everett Platt and wife Carrie, Cumberland, and Robert Platt and wife Gloria, Mount Savage; one brother, Henry Shaw and wife Mary, Oldtown; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Douglas Seaman officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

ERNEST L. SHREVE
CUMBERLAND - Ernest Lee Shreve, 67, of JFK Apartments, 135 N. Mechanic St., Cumberland, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 6, 1931, in Dawson, he was the son of the late Arley Bevry Shreve and the late Hazel Viola (Lewis) Shreve. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Selina Thelma (Thomas) Shreve.

Mr. Shreve was a retired laborer for a construction union. He was a member of Centre Street United Methodist Church, and V.F.W. Henry Hart Post #1411. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Surviving are his stepdaughter, Patricia Reed, Albany, N.Y.; two brothers, James Shreve, Cumberland, and Donald "Pete" Shreve, McCoole; two sisters, Marion Mathais, Augusta, W.Va., and Sandra Kay "Peachie" Dolly, Keyser, W.Va.; two step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Lloyd B. McCanna officiating.

Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
