FRANCES B. SLUSS
FROSTBURG - Frances (Bauer) Sluss, age 83, formerly of Frostburg, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Jan. 15, 1916, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late William Henry Bauer and Frances (Goodwin) Bauer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Sluss, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Sluss was the retired owner and operator of Sluss' Store, West Main Street, Frostburg. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, and along with her husband was an avid volunteer at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home, having volunteered over 8,000 hours.
Surviving are two daughters, Lois DiRito and fiancee, Jack Twist, Baltimore, and Kay Feigley and husband, Richard, Grantsville; one son, William Sluss III and wife, Maureen; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Sluss's body was donated to the Anatomical Board of Maryland.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Paul Byrnes as celebrant.
The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Michael's Catholic Church.
NANCY L. WHITACRE
CUMBERLAND - Nancy Lee Whitacre, 56, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 26, 1942, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John and Susie (Fishel) Whitacre. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Calvin, William, and Joseph Diehl Whitacre; and three nieces, Linda Woods, Kathy Raynor and Tammy DeMoss.
She was a member of the Friends Aware Work Development Center, and a member of the Full Gospel Pentecostal Church on Eastern Avenue.
Surviving are a sister, Eleanor Woods, with whom she resided; five nieces, Millie McLaughlin, Betty Conner, Ginny Carr, Carol Morgret and Susie Miller; three nephews, Chuck Woods, Tom Whitacre and William Whitacre Jr.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James Peters officiating.
Interment will be in the Davis Memorial Cemetery.
LEO M. WALIZER
CORRIGANVILLE - Leo Melvin Walizer, 87, of 11615 Mount Savage Road, NW, Corriganville, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Center, Frostburg.
Born, June 3, 1912, in Hagerstown, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel (Lepley) Walizer.
Mr. Walizer was a retired employee of the Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are two sons, Royce W. Walizer, Fort Ashby, W.Va., and Frank A. Walizer and wife Eileen, Laurel; and four grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, PA, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ken L. Korns officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

KAYLA M. WIDDOWS
CUMBERLAND - Kayla Marie Widdows, 2 months, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at her home in Washington County.
Born June 25, 1999, at Washington County Hospital, she was the daughter of Brooke N. Widdows, Michael D. Sweeney and stepfather, Curtis R. Lemons.
Kayla was a very special princess who was loved by everyone who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Charles E. Widdows Jr.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Brenda and Wade Rippeon, Hagerstown, Doug and Judy Widdows, Cumberland, Billy Shrader and Melinda Sweeney, Hagerstown; great-grandparents, Bobby and Gloria Finlayson, Va., and Shirley Widdows, Cumberland; three aunts, Tonya Clay, Kiera Widdows and Heather Sweeney, all of Hagerstown; one uncle, Douglas Widdows Jr., Cumberland; and two cousins, Brandon Widdows and Karley Sweeney, both of Hagerstown; and numerous great-aunts and great-uncles.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Douglas Widdows and Wade Rippeon.

PHILOMENA V. SMALL
WESTERNPORT - Philomena Virginia (Burns) Small, of 407 Maryland Ave., Westernport, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland. She would have been 88 years of age on her next birthday, and was the youngest and last surviving member of her immediate family.
Born Feb. 12, 1912, in Piedmont, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William F. Burns and Elizabeth C. (Studd) Burns. She was married
to James T. Small Sr., on Dec. 16, 1936, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, and was preceded in death by him on April 8, 1979. She also was preceded in death by a son, Robert D. Small on April 8, 1949; three sisters, Viola and Leonora Burns, and Frances Hannon; a brother, Robert Burns; and a step-brother, Norman F. Burns.
Mrs. Small is survived by one son, James T. Small Jr., M.D., of Waukesha, Wisc.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth A. Polacheck, M.D., and husband Lee, of Waukesha, and Brian R. Small, of Cincinnati; two great-grandchildren, Kaitiln and Claire Polacheck; two nieces, Rosemary and Frances Ann Hannon, of McLean, Va., and a niece-in-law, Margaret L. Hannon McCutcheon, of Cumberland.
A member of St. Peter's Church, Mrs. Small was a 1930 alumna of St. Peter's High School, and a member of it's Alumni Association. A Registered Nurse, she graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Baltimore, and was the nurse at Westvaco's Luke plant for 25 years. She was also a member of Court Sancta Maria, Catholic Daughters 485, Piedmont.
At the request of the deceased, her body will be cremated. There will be no visitation or funeral, and a memorial Mass will be offered at St. Peter's Church, at a later date.
If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice, the Tri-Towns Rescue Squad, or the Bereavement Committee of St. Peter's Church.
