ARNOLD L. SMITH
FAIRFAX, Va. - Arnold Lewis Smith, 62, of Fairfax, formerly of Flintstone, died on Aug. 20, 1999, after a battle with cancer.
He was the beloved husband of Patricia Smith; loving father of Gregory Kimmel Smith; son of Bernard Kimmel Smith; brother of Vianna Fletcher and Vernon Smith; and grandfather of Katherine Francis Smith and Evelyn Patricia Smith.
Visitation was held at Murphy's Falls Church Funeral Home, 1102 W. Broad St. Fairfax, Route 7, on Tuesday from noon until time of service at 2 p.m.
Interment was private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Northern Virginia.
BERNARD SMITH JR.
ECKHART - Bernard Smith Jr., 73, of 17006 cemetery Road, S.W., Eckhart, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 28, 1926, in Zihlman, he was the son of the late Barney and Ethel (Williams) Smith. His wife, Andree (Bendel) Smith, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Smith was retired from the Purolator armored carrier service. He also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He was a Lifetime Member and Past Commander of Farrady Post #24 American Legion, Frostburg, a member of V.F.W. Old Rail Post #6025, Mount Savage, the James P. Dickel Chapter of Korean War Veterans, Mount Savage, and a former member and trustee of the Frostburg Elks Lodge #470.
Surviving are two daughters, Kay Phillips, Little Orleans, and Barbara Werner, Rock Hill, S.C.; three sons, Bernard F. Smith, Richmond, Ohio, Tom Smith, Potomac Park, and Michael Smith, Yardley, Pa.; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Greg Smith and Bruce Smith, both of Frostburg; two sisters, JoAnn Powell, Mount Savage, and Phyllis Hawn, Rawlings; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 8 p.m. by members of the Korean War Veterans.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. George Harpold officiating. Members of the American Legion and V.F.W. Honor Guards will accord Military Honors at the funeral home following the service.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap on Monday.
CLARENCE H. "BUD" SMITH SR.
CUMBERLAND - Clarence H. "Bud" Smith Sr., 76, of 816 Greene St., Cumberland, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born June 11, 1922, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Clarence Monique Smith and the late Flora (Cook) Smith. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Smith Sr. was employed by the Western Maryland Railway for 20 years, and retired from the Cumberland Police Department. He was a member of Pentecostal Holiness Church and Fulton Post #153 American Legion. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Francena L. (Carter) Smith, Cumberland; five sons, Clarence Henry Smith Jr. and wife, Rebecca, Winchester, Va., Patrick Smith, Anthony Smith, Danny Smith and Mark Smith, all of Cumberland; four daughters, Freida Spriggs and husband, Raymond, Cumberland, Rebecca Ellis and husband, Richard, Johnstown, Pa., Ann Ruiz and husband, Joe, Chicago, Ill., and Deanna Spaulding and husband, Paul, Winchester; 33 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Rodney Casteel officiating.
Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
ELEANOR R. SMITH
CUMBERLAND - Eleanor R. Smith, 88, of Cumberland, passed from this Earth to join our Heavenly Father on Feb. 20, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born March 29, 1910, in Dunbar, Pa., she was the daughter of the late James and Minerva (Bodkin) Minerd. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her brothers, George, James and David Minerd; and her only sister, Edith Yutzy.
Mrs. Smith was a loving Mother, Grandmother, friend and helper to her family. Those who remain, who will treasure her memory, are her two sons, James F. Smith and wife, Ramona, Fort Ashby, W.Va., Richard H. Smith, Winchester, Va.; two daughters, Elaine S. Hawkins and husband, Richard, Jarrettsville, and Nadine S. Reinhart and husband, Robert, LaVale. She was affectionately known as Na Na to her 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Smith attended Dunbar High School and worked for 30 years as a Laboratory Technician at Memorial Hospital, where she had wonderful, caring and loving friends who always remembered her in her golden years. She worked for many years as a Red Cross volunteer phlebotomist, and she was the recipient of the Sarah Bennaman Award, given annually to an American Red Cross volunteeer. She was a member of Emmanuel-Bethel United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's Society, and the Mizpah Bible Class at the church.
For those who desire, donations may be made in Mrs. Smith's memory to the Emmanuel-Bethel United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Emmanuel-Bethel United Methodist Church, 24 Humbird St., on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Millie Martin officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
JENETTA M. WILSON
CUMBERLAND - Jenetta M. Wilson, 62, of Cumberland, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 17, 1937, in Farmington, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late David F. and Emma (Bray) Markley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Wilson Jr., in 1995; and four brothers, George, Charles, David and Jesse Markley; and one sister, Freda Coffman.
Mrs. Wilson was a 1955 graduate of Fort Hill High School. She worked at Chicken Jubilee and Hafer's Restaurant. She moved to Florida and worked at Shoney's where she retired. She returned to Cumberland in December 1998. Mrs. Wilson belonged to the Golden Agers and the Twilight Bowling Leagues at White Oaks.
Surviving are one son, Joseph Wilson III, Nebraska; two daughters, Tracy Wilson, Cumberland, Valerie Wilson, Lakeland, Fla.; six grandchildren, Tonya, Massachusetts, Ian, Sammy, both of Cumberland, Austin, Brittany and Aaron, all of Florida; and one great-grandson, Daryun, Massachusetts; two brothers, Delbert and James Markley, both of Cumberland; two sisters, Loretta Siebel, Cumberland, Ada Welch, Ellicott City.
At Mrs. Wilson's request she was cremated.
Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., is handling the arrangements.
There will be a memorial service at a later date.
FREDERICK J. SMITH SR.
WILLINGBORO, N.J. - Frederick J. Smith Sr., 54, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at his home with his family after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Elkins, W.Va., he was a 1963 graduate of Ridgeley High School, Ridgeley, W.Va. He resided in Willingboro, N.J., with his family for 25 years and worked proudly at AFG Industries of Cinnaminson, N.J., as a glass production scheduler. He was a devoted husband, caring father and loving grandfather.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Jolie K. (nee Crass); and his mother, Phyllis Simmons and stepfather William Simmons, Elkins, W.Va. He will be sadly missed by his son, Frederick Jr. and his wife Kimberly, Burlington Township, N.J.; son, Christopher, Willingboro, N.J., son, Patrick and his wife Lisa, Delran, N.J.; brother, John Smith, Westminster, Md.; sisters, Marlene Snyder, Harmon, W.Va., and Carloyn Steinmetz, Cumberland, Md.; and grandchildren, Toby, Pumpkin and Peanut. He also is survived by his extended family at AFG Industries, Cinnaminson, N.J., and Kingsport, Tenn.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Father Reginald Russo, OFM, Cap., officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, Md.
ANNA M. WINN
LONACONING - Anna Maybelle (Robertson) Winn, 90, of 16 E. Railroad St., died June 23, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born June 12, 1909, in Frostburg, she was a daughter of the late James M. Robertson and Mary Elizabeth (Tranum) Robertson. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Earl Wilson, Thomas Steele, and Joseph A. Winn; and one son, Thomas Earl Wilson.
She was a member of American Legion Victory Post #155 Auxiliary, Westernport, the Senior Citizens of Lonaconing, and the Retirement Club of Cumberland.
Surviving are two brothers, Don R. Robertson, Shaft, Emerson Robertson and wife, Evelyn, Mount Savage; and two sisters, Josephine Peebles and Dorothy Stewart, both of Lonaconing; two grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, Thursday, June 24, 1999, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home Friday, June 25, 1999, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Mortimore officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
