George Donaldson Jr.
George Edgar "Bill" Donaldson Jr., 86, of Edgewater and formerly of Rustberg, Va., died of heart disease Aug. 20, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mr. Donaldson was born June 10, 1916, in Washington, D.C., where he graduated in 1933 from Central High School. He served in the Army during World War II as a private first class.
He retired as a benchman for Connecticut Optical Co. in Washington.
His interests included woodworking, gardening and working on cars.
On Nov. 26, 1949, he married
Henrietta Donaldson.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, George E. Donaldson III of Edgewater; one sister, Mary Campbell of Landham-Seabrook; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Arthur, Ernest and Dorothy Donaldson.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Kalas Funeral Home Chapel, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.
Ruth Etzel
Ruth Anne Etzel, 71, died of multiple sclerosis Aug. 20, 2002 at her home in Severna Park after a 12-year illness.
Mrs. Etzel was born July 30, 1931, and raised in Baltimore, where she graduated from St. Paul's Commercial School.
She worked for her father, who owned the Joseph G. Mannion Insurance Co. where she was vice-president.
In 1951, she married
George Eugene "Gene" Etzel and three years later they moved to Severna Park.
Mrs. Etzel was a member of the Sodality at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She enjoyed fishing and spending time at her home in Ocean City.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Mark E. Etzel of Severna Park; one daughter, Mary Rose Hoffman of Arnold; and two granddaughters.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Ritchie Highway at Cypress Creek Road in Severna Park. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, 6020 Ritchie Highway, Brooklyn Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church Building Fund, Ritchie Highway at Cypress Creek Road, Severna Park, MD 21146, or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 8338 Veterans HIghway, Suite 102B, Millersville, MD 21108.
Thomas Garland IV
A memorial service for Thomas A. Garland IV, 30, of Glen Burnie, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at 1227 Collins Ave. in Odenton.
Mr. Garland died Aug. 17, 2002 at the scene of a motorcycle accident at Route 10 and I-695 in Glen Burnie.
Born June 5, 1972, in Silver Spring and raised in Cheverly, he attended Crofton Elementary School, Crofton Junior High School and Arundel High School. He also previously lived in Columbus, Ohio.
Mr. Garland worked for Espuit Performance in Landover.
He enjoyed attending motorcycle events all over the country and being with his family.
Surviving are his wife of nine years, Angela M. Mathias; four daughters, Mia LaQuel, Alexandra Marie, Thomi Ann and Savannah Renee Garland, all of Glen Burnie; his father, Thomas Alexander Garland III of Odenton; his mother, Gloria Broadus Garland of Glen Burnie; one sister, Maiysha Lakelle Nelson of Tucker, Ga.; one brother, Andre L. Garland of Glen Burnie; two grandmothers, Colista V. Garland of Cheverly and Clarissa B. Thomas of Leesburg, Va.; and his great-grandmother, Mary Murray of Brentwood.
Kathleen Gilligan
A Mass of Christian burial for Kathleen Victoria Riley Gilligan, 85, a 42-year resident of Glen Burnie and previously of Boston, Mass., was said this morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Petersville.
Mrs. Gilligan died of natural causes Aug. 15, 2002 at her son's residence in Burkittsville after a lengthy illness.
The daughter of the late Edward John and Mary Elizabeth Burns Riley, she was born in Cambridge, Mass., on March 17, 1917.
A homemaker, she was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church for 40 years. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed antiquing and needlepoint.
Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Francis Michael Gilligan; four sons, Michael Gilligan of Pasadena, Paul Gilligan of Burkittsville, Brian Gilligan of Severna Park and Joseph Gilligan of Glen Burnie; one daughter, Mary Zukowski of Cape Cod, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
She was the sister of the late Robert "Buddy" and Frances Riley, Mary "Babe" Davis, Ann Tobin and Margaret "Peggy" Boyle.
Arrangements were by William's Funeral Home of Brunswick.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memorial Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Leona Lieberman
Leona "Lee" Katherine Lieberman, 94, a resident of Glen Burnie for 21 years and previously of Rock Hall, died of natural causes Aug. 18, 2002 at the Severna Park Center, Genesis ElderCare Network.
Mrs. Lieberman was born in Baltimore on May 17, 1908. She completed eighth grade and worked as a shoe salesman for the former Robinson's Department Store in Glen Burnie.
She enjoyed crochet work, reading, dancing and playing cards and was known for cultivating award-winning dahlias.
Her husband of 58 years, Charles M. Lieberman, died Dec. 21, 1985.
She is survived by one daughter, L. Lorraine Willis of Arnold; one sister, Drusilla Kellum of Greenwood, Del.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at McCully and Polyniak Funeral Home, 3204 Mountain Road in Pasadena, where services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow in Glen Haven cemetery in Glen Burnie.
William Thompson
William Edward "Mike" Thompson, 95, of Seaford, Del., and formerly of Grasonville, died Aug. 19, 2002 at the Methodist Manor House in Seaford.
Born Sept. 28, 1906, in Grasonville, Mr. Thompson was the son of the late Edward S. and Mary Elizabeth Tarr Thompson. He graduated from Stevensville High School.
During World War II, he served in the Navy. He resumed his career with the Railway Postal Service until 1968. He also was a mason with Phillips and Thompson and with Orem A. Thompson.
From 1970 to 1972, he was the zoning administrator for Queen Anne's County and had been on the county Planning and Zoning Commission.
He was a charter member of the Grasonville Volunteer Fire Department and past president of the Kent and Queen Anne's Fireman's Association.
On June 25, 1938, he married
the former Ruth Mildred Lyon, who died in 1969.
Surviving are two sons, Byron E. Thompson of Lancaster, Calif., and Bruce E. Thompson of Chester; two daughters, Hila Baker and Florence Simmons, both of Centreville; a sister, Evelyn "Sis" Morris of Grasonville; a brother, Donald Thompson of Chester; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Herman S. Thompson Sr. and Walton, Orem and Richard E. "Peck" Thompson.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Woodlawn cemetery in Easton. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home in Centreville.
