Peggy Timko
Peggy Lee Timko, 57, of Odenton, died Aug. 18, 2002 of heart failure on a hiking trail in Sedona, Ariz.
Mrs. Timko was born March 17, 1945, in Burlington, N.C., and was raised in Mebane, N.C. She graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., with a bachelor of science degree in 1967. She came to Severna Park in the late 1960s and moved to Odenton three years ago.
Mrs. Timko taught business and special education at Severna Park High School from 1967 to 1995.
She was a member of the Ark and Dove Presbyterian Church in Odenton.
Her husband, Edward Andrew Timko, died in 1984.
Surviving are three daughters, Leigh Ann Matejek of Waldorf, Julie Anne Bowlby of Glen Burnie and Andrea Gayle Timko of Odenton; one sister, Wanda Newlin of Mebane; and her mother, Sadie Wood of Mebane; and four grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ark and Dove Presbyterian Church, 8424 Piney Orchard Parkway, Odenton. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville.
Stella Deal
The date of birth was incorrect in the obituary for Stella J. Deale, 78, of Edgewater on Aug. 18, 2002.
Mrs. Deale, who died Aug. 15, was born May 28, 1924, in Warsaw, Poland.
Ernest Bell
Ernest R. Bell, 58, of Upper Marlboro, died Aug. 19, 2002 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. The cause of death was unavailable.
Mr. Bell was born Sept. 13, 1943, in Lothian and was employed by the Prince George's County Board of Education.
He is survived by one daughter, Angela Bell; his mother, Mary A. Bell; two brothers, Calvin Bell and Wayne Neal, both of Forestville; and two sisters, Agnes Johnson of Lothian and Virginia Freeland of Owings.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday with a Christian wake at 10 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, 41 Ark Road, Lothian. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
Max Carpenter
Max Hamer Carpenter, 81, of Crownsville, died Aug. 16, 2002 at his home from injuries sustained in a household accident.
Mr. Carpenter was born April 16, 1921, in Seattle, Wash., and was educated at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University and the University of Montana. He held a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He lived in Severna Park before moving to Crownsville 15 years ago.
Mr. Carpenter was the co-owner and director of Simulation Projects for NAV-SIM Associates. He was past executive director and special projects director for the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies.
He also worked as a program manager for Singer Link, was a manager of Maritime Services for Kelvin & Hughes and marketed various weapon systems and components to the Navy when he worked for ITT in Washington, D.C.
He also published many articles about maritime simulation and radar use in addition to two books through the Cornell Maritime Press.
Mr. Carpenter served in the Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1945.
He was a founding member and past president of the International Omega Association. He also served as chairman for the Institute of Navigation and was a member of the Society for Computer Simulation, the Propeller Club and the International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation.
Mr. Carpenter enjoyed traveling, boating, electronics and family get-togethers.
He was the widower of Evelyn Carpenter.
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Youngbar and Janet Steele of Roanoke, Va., and Judy Schiltz of Birmingham, Ala.; one stepson, Frank Welch of Annapolis; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and his companion, Pauline Niemeyer of Crownsville.
No formal services are planned.
Ruth Etzel
Ruth Anne Etzel, 71, died of multiple sclerosis Aug. 20, 2002 at her home in Severna Park.
Mrs. Etzel was born July 30, 1931, and raised in Baltimore, where she graduated from St. Paul's Commercial School.
She worked for her father, who owned the Joseph G. Mannion Insurance Co. where she was vice-president.
In 1951, she married
George Eugene "Gene" Etzel and three years later moved to Severna Park.
Mrs. Etzel was a member of the Sodality at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She enjoyed fishing and spending time at her home in Ocean City.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Mark E. Etzel of Severna Park; one sister, Mary Rose Hoffman of Arnold; and two granddaughters.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Ritchie Highway at Cypress Creek Road in Severna Park. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, 6020 Ritchie Highway, Brooklyn Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church Building Fund, Ritchie Highway at Cypress Creek Road, Severna Park, MD 21146, or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 8338 Veterans HIghway, Suite 102B, Millersville, MD 21108.
Rita Krause
Rita Freeman Krause, 76, a resident of Annapolis for more than 30 years, died of heart failure Aug. 20, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mrs. Krause was born in Bangor, Maine, on Aug. 10, 1926, and received her bachelor's of science degree in nursing from the University of Maine. She formerly lived in Springfield, Va.
She was a Navy nurse, serving from 1948 to 1955 and retiring as a lieutenant. She was known as "mom" to hundreds of Naval Academy midshipmen from 1968 to 1997.
Mrs. Krause was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Naval Academy Catholic Chapel community.
On Aug. 27, 1955, she was married
to Stephen R. Krause.
Also surviving are one son, Navy Capt. Stephen R. "Skip" Krause Jr. of Daphne, Ala.; one daughter, Eleanor F. Krause of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Eleanor F. Freeman of Clearwater, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Naval Academy Chapel. Inurnment will be in the Naval Academy Columbarium.
Those attending the service should meet at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium parking lot at 9 a.m. to take the shuttle to the academy. The last shuttle will leave at 9:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Archdiocese for the Military Services -- Seminarians Fund, P.O. Box 4469, Washington, DC 20017.
Robert A. Mark
A Mass of Christian burial for Robert A. "Bobby" Mark, 43, of Edgewater, will be said at 9 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater.
Mr. Mark died Aug. 21, 2002 after being struck by a motor vehicle on Route 50 near Route 424 near Davidsonville.
He was born in Annapolis on April 19, 1959, and graduated from St. Mary's High School.
He was a self-employed landscape contractor.
In 1972, when he was 13, he received the Annapolis City Hero Award for saving a man from drowning in the South River.
Mr. Mark was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, an outdoor and boating enthusiast, an expert swimmer, a Bay fisherman and investor.
He is survived by his parents, Albert and Norma Mark of Edgewater; two brothers, Frank Mark of Annapolis and Albert Mark of Baltimore; and four sisters, Sharon Poulette of Laurel, Mary Amarl of Potomac, Arleen Stull of Biloxi, Miss., and Elizabeth Goloski of Annapolis.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Burial arrangements are incomplete.
