Jasen Sedunov
Jasen Steven Sedunov, 30, of Annapolis, died Aug. 21, 2002 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after a short battle with lung cancer.
Born in Greensburg, Pa., Mr. Sedunov attended Holy Cross Elementary School in Youngwood, Pa., and graduated in 1987 from Hempfield Area High School in Westmoreland County, Pa. He attended St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.
He interned as a researcher at the CNN Washington, D.C., news bureau and at other television and radio stations. In 1997 he started an independent political consultant and media production business.
He was a talented trumpet player.
Surviving are his wife, Heather Fleming Sedunov, formerly of Uniontown, Pa.; his parents, Steven and Marsha Zazac Sedunov of Indiana, Pa.; and one brother, Joshua E. Sedunov of Glen Burnie. He was the brother of the late Nicole Sedunov.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 31 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Youngwood. Arrangements are by the Marvin V. Williams Funeral Service in Chestertown.
Lawrence H. Dunn
Lawrence H. Dunn, 86, a resident of Annapolis for 10 months, died Sept. 25, 2002 at his Heritage Harbor home.
Mr. Dunn was born in Niles, Ohio, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 1936 where he eventually rose to the rank of 1st lieutenant, despite only having a high school education.
He served on the battleship USS Colorado and served in the 1st Marine Division in the South Pacific during World War II as an assault combat tank platoon leader, executive officer of an assault combat tank company and a battalion intelligence officer.
He survived the Battle of Peleliu and was medically retired from the Marine Corps Dec. 1, 1946.
Following his Marine Corps service, Mr. Dunn earned a political science degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and also studied at the University of Seville, Spain. He belonged to Pi Sigma Alpha, an honorary political science fraternity and also to the National Rifle Association.
Following former President Nixon's 1968 campaign, during which he worked in the New York campaign headquarters, Mr. Dunn was appointed assistant secretary for administration for the Department of the Interior. He was also a deputy special assistant to Mr. Nixon. From 1973 to his retirement in 1977, Mr. Dunn was the personal representative of the secretary of transportation in the western states and was based in San Francisco, Calif.
Mr. Dunn is survived by his longtime companion, Marie Zunic of Annapolis.
Mr. Dunn will be buried with full military honors at 3 p.m. Oct. 8 at Arlington National Cemetery.
Joseph Samuel Carton
Joseph Samuel Carton, 82, a resident of Annapolis for 50 years, died Sept. 27, 2002 at his home at Vantage House, Columbia.
Mr. Carton was born in Philadelphia on Aug. 4, 1915. He and his wife, Selma, owned the Leader Dress Shops on Main Street and Parole Plaza. The Cartons were married
for 60 years.
Mr. Carton was an avid reader and bridge enthusiast.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Michael Brazzel of Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Leslie Carton of Columbia; sister, Faye Weisblatt of Silver Spring; brother Sidney Carton of Baltimore; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will take place at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Kneseth Israel Cemetery, Annapolis. The family will receive friends after the service at Steve Carton's home.
Paul Bolyard
Paul David Bolyard Sr., 79, of Denton and formerly of Chester, a retired Montgomery County school teacher and coach, died Sept. 20, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Easton.
Mr. Bolyard was born in Erwin, W.Va., on April 29, 1923, the son of the late George Henry and Bess Shanks Bolyard. He graduated from Kingwood, W.Va., High School in 1941 and was a torpedoman first class in the Navy during World War II, serving in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
He attended Potomac State College in Keyser, W.Va., and Fairmont, W.Va., State College, receiving a bachelor of science degree. He later received a master's degree from West Virginia University and continued his studies at the University of Maryland.
He taught school and coached at Aurora, W.Va., High School and at Kingwood High School. In 1959 he moved to Montgomery County where he taught, coached and served as acting athletic director at Northwood High School.
After retiring in 1982 he moved to Chester and in 1997 to Denton. He was a member of the Kingwood Masonic Lodge and the American Legion in Denton. An avid golfer, he was a player's assistant at Queenstown Harbor Golf Links and a member of Caroline Country Club.
On Nov. 21, 1951, he married
the former Margaret Stemple of Chester.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Paul David Bolyard Jr. of Ingleside in Queen Anne's County; one daughter, Janet Bolyard Treichel of Easton; one brother, John Wesley Bolyard of Panama City, Fla.; and two grandchildren. He was the brother of the late George S. Bolyard.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Fellows Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Main Street, Preston, where memorial services will follow at 11 a.m.
Josephine Foley
Josephine E. Strippy Foley, 85, of Centreville, died at Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville on Sept. 29, 2002.
Born April 15, 1917, in Brunswick, Mrs. Foley was the daughter of the late Russell and Elizabeth Powers Strippy. She grew up in the Washington, D.C., area. She had a career with the U.S. Department of Commerce as a contract officer. Following her retirement she moved to Florida and had resided there for the last 30 years.
Her husband, Frank Foley, died on May 28, 2002.
Surviving are a son, William Martin of Grasonville; a brother, James Strippy of St. George, Fla; a sister, Lavenia Buffaloe; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends and family may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, from 10 to 11 a.m. tomorrow. Graveside services will be follow at noon Fort Lincoln cemetery in Brentwood.
Eileen Koontz
Eileen Margaret Koontz, 85, a resident of Davidsonville for 36 years and previously of Washington, D.C., died of natural causes Sept. 26, 2002 at her home.
Mrs. Koontz was born May 25, 1917, in Washington, D.C., where she graduated from the former Wilson Teacher's College. She taught at Hine Junior High School and Chamberlain Vocational High School in Washington.
She was a founding member of the Harbor Hills Book Club and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, the West River Yacht Club's Buoy Bells and the Southern Comforter's Quilting Club in Bowie.
She loved the South River, hard shell crabs, quilting and family.
In 1937 she was married
to John Donovan Koontz.
Also surviving are her son, John Donovan Koontz of Bowie; one daughter, Dr. Theresa Noland of Boulder, Colo.; one sister, Catherine Robinson of Davidsonville; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 3 p.m. Sunday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403.
Donald Miller
Donald A. Miller, 79, of Severna Park, died of cancer Sept. 29, 2002 at North Arundel Hospital after a three-year illness.
Born July 30, 1923, and raised in Baltimore, Mr. Miller lived in the Severna Park area the last 15 years.
During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps and was a prisoner of war in Germany for two years.
He worked as a local insurance executive with various insurance companies.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia N. Miller; his son, Glenn Miller of Severna Park; two daughters, Donna Miller Streagle of Ellicott City and Julie Miller Overturf of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his sister, Ruth Volz of Pasadena; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 607 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville.
