Howard Norton
Howard W. "Bubby" Norton, 57, of Huntingtown and formerly of Churchton, died of hepatic failure Oct. 9, 2002 at Washington Hospital Center.
Born May 14, 1945, in Washington, D.C., Mr. Norton was raised in Bradbury Heights and graduated from Suitland High School in 1964. He married
Cynthia M. "Cindy" Buckley in 1966 and they lived in Suitland until moving to Churchton in 1969. They moved to Huntingtown in 1979.
He was employed as a cable splicer for the former C&P; and Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. and by Verizon, retiring in 2001 after a career of 35 years.
He was a charter member of the Deale Elks Lodge 2528 and had transferred his membership to the Calvert Lodge 2620 in Prince Frederick. He was considered an avid fisherman and he enjoyed telling stories and jokes.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Michelle M. Hill and Jennifer L. Sodero, both of Lusby; three grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Koch of Annapolis and Nancy Deakins of Riverdale; and two brothers, David Norton of Huntingtown and Jerry Norton of Chesapeake Beach.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. tomorrow at Rausch Funeral Home, 8325 Mount Harmony Lane, Owings, where a memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. Burial will be private.

Syble Freeman
Syble Heard Freeman, 70, of Tifton, Ga., died Oct. 11, 2002 at Beverly Health Care of Tifton. The cause of death was not available.
She was born July 24, 1932, the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Bessie Walls Heard, in Irwin County, Ga.
Mrs. Heard was a homemaker and lived in Georgia most of her life.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Heard; one brother, Dock Heard; and one sister, Grace Ellison.
Surviving are three daughters, Karen Wood of Moultrie, Ga., Patricia Hayden of Deale and Gail Marquart of Douglasville, Ga.; three sisters, Ruby Boyer of Chula, Ga., Jimmie Miller of Tifton and Nancy Brady of Greenville, Fla.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Family and friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Home, Tiftarea Chapel, 1020 Tift Ave., Tifton, Ga. Funeral services will be held there tomorrow at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Waterloo Baptist Church Cemetery, Irwin County, Ga. Family may be contacted at the home of Jimmie Miller.
Charles Hufnagel
Charles T. Hufnagel, 88, a longtime resident of Annapolis, died Oct. 11, 2002 at Genesis Elder Care Spa Creek. The cause of death was not available.
Mr. Hufnagel was born Jan. 29, 1914, in Pittsburgh. He received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Tech (now known as Carnegie Mellon).
From 1936 to 1941 he was a marine engineer for the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers before embarking on a lengthy career with the Navy. He came to the Annapolis area in 1941 and was employed by the Naval Experimental Station. He became an active duty engineer officer at the outbreak of WWII and served in the Pacific from 1941 to 1946. After the war, he resumed his work for the Navy as a civilian and reserve officer. He worked at the Boston Naval Shipyard before becoming the director of utilities for the Naval Ordinance Station in Indian Head. He served in that capacity from 1956 until his retirement in 1981. He had previously retired from the Naval Reserves as a commander in 1974.
A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, he enjoyed dancing, working with his hands and walking.
He is predeceased by three sisters, Dorothea, Ethel and Martha Hufnagel.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mania E. Hufnagel of Annapolis; two sons, Charles T. Hufnagel Jr. of Annapolis and Paul Hufnagel of New Orleans; three daughters, Mary Ann Keicher and Susie Tom, both of Annapolis, and Sharon Brandl of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother, Harold Hufnagel of Irwin, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.
Family and friends may call tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., Annapolis. A memorial mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis. Interment will be private at St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery.

Hubert Kernan Jr.
A memorial service for Hubert Dolbeare Kernan Jr., a 45-year resident of Warwick, R.I., and currently of Westford, Mass., was held Oct. 7, 2002 in Westford. He died Sept. 29 at his home after a struggle with cancer.
Born Aug. 7, 1914, in Utica, N.Y., Mr. Kernan was the son of Elizabeth Constable and Hubert D. Kernan and the oldest of seven children. He attended Utica Country Day and Harvard University. During WWII he served in the Navy as an air combat intelligence officer, mostly in the Pacific.
On Aug. 13, 1951, he married
Patricia O'Connell of Chicago, who died in May 1979. They lived in Utica until moving to Rhode Island in 1957. He worked for Lessona Corp., traveling the country and Europe, selling textile machinery. He retired in the mid-1970s.
An avid athlete and sportsman, he enjoyed skiing and body surfing and was a member of various ski clubs, the Dunes Club in Narragansett, R.I., and the Harvard University Class of 1936 lunch bunch. He was a founding member of St. Gregory the Great Church in Warwick.
His interests included reading, travel, cooking, gardening, storytelling of family lore, the Boston Red Sox and carving canes from small trees he collected during his travels.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Kernan Salsich of Annapolis and Margaret Kernan Webb of Westford; his sisters, Isabelle Farley Livermore of Lincoln, Mass., Betty Dore of Seattle and Kate Farley of Clinton, N.Y.; his brother, James C. Kernan of Utica; and six grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 8 at Historic Old St. John's Church, 240 Bleecker St., Utica. Arrangements are by Healy Funeral Home in Westford.

Howard McCutcheon
Howard "George" McCutcheon, 60, of Mayo and previously Riverdale, died Oct. 10, 2002, of cancer at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mr. McCutcheon was born June 27, 1942, in Pittsburgh. He was a 1960 graduate of Penn Hills Senior High School. In 1964, he received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University and in 1968 he received his master's of science in mathematics from George Washington University.
Since 1964 he worked as a mathematician for the National Security Agency.
His hobbies and interests were the theory of mathematics and statistics.
He is survived by one sister, Sue Ann M. Bachman of New Kensington, Pa.
Memorial services will be held at a place and time to be announced. Burial will be private at Mt. Hope cemetery in Penn Hills, Pa. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home, Annapolis.

Velpoe Smith
Andrew Velpoe Smith Sr., 94, a 32-year resident of Edgewater and previously of Annapolis, died of natural causes Oct. 8, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Smith was born June 9, 1908, in Birmingham, Ala. He graduated from Auburn University, formerly Alabama Polytechnic Institute, in 1930 with a degree in civil engineering. He was self-employed and built many of the highway overpasses on Route 50 and I-70 as well as emergency air fields during WWII.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Tau Beti Pi honors fraternity and Lambda Chi fraternity. He also was a longtime member of the Annapolis Yacht Club. He enjoyed gardening and following Auburn football.
Mr. Smith was an early aviator with the Alabama Air National Guard and later the Army Air Corps.
In 1963, he received an award for saving several children's lives during an escalator accident at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium.
He married
Elizabeth P. Smith, who died July 3, 1998.
He was the father of Bryant T. Smith, who died in 1993, and the brother of the late Sumpter, Hester M. and Victor Smith, Joseph D. Smith Jr., Edward S. Smith Sr., Sarah Rigney, Elizabeth Burton, Elsie Hill and Mary Jo Patton.
Surviving are two sons, Andrew V. Smith Jr. of Cape St. Claire and John P. Smith of Edgewater; one daughter, Mettie M. Smith of Annapolis; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., and at 1 p.m. tomorrow at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 4 Wallace Manor Road in Edgewater, where the funeral will follow at 1:30 p.m.
