Billy Melchor
Billy Conrad Melchor, 71, of Arnold and formerly of Pasadena, died of heart failure Oct. 18, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born Jan. 1, 1931, in North Carolina, Mr. Melchor had lived in Arnold for 25 years. He was a self-employed contractor.
His hobbies were fishing, camping, boating and working on motorcycles.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne Conrad Melchor of Pasadena and Brian Keith Melchor of Annapolis; one daughter, Linda Neighoff of Centreville; four brothers, Howard Melchor of Albuquerque, N. M., Jack Melchor of Los Altos, Calif., Dennis R. Melchor of Baldwin in Baltimore County and Douglas A. Melchor of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; three sisters, Frances Davis of Salisbury, N.C., Jean M. Buccheri of Pasadena and Sonya N. Dwyer of Taneytown; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was married
to the late Billie Jean Melchor. He was the father of the late Patsy Ann Melchor Hood and the brother of the late Herbert, Jimmy and Frank Melchor and Gloria McCarthy.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway where the funeral will be at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Meadowridge Memorial Park of Elkridge.

Connor Persons
Connor Sterling Jag Persons, 12, of Stevensville, died of pneumonia, which was related to his cancer, on Oct. 16, 2002 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Connor was born June 19, 1990, in Corpus Christi, Texas, the son of Deirdre Leary Persons and Marine Capt. Keith Allen Persons, who died in 1997.
Growing up in a military family, he lived in numerous places including Texas, Mississippi, California and Nevada, coming to Kent Island in 1997. He was a student at Stevensville Middle School and was active in youth football and soccer. He loved fishing and the outdoors.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, Chase L. Persons of the home; and his grandparents, Arthur and Judith Leary of Connecticut and Leah Persons of Colorado.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 tonight at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, where services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow. A graveside service at Stevensville cemetery will follow.

Lester Phipps
Lester Evans "Les" Phipps, 76, a 45-year resident of Edgewater, died of heart failure Oct. 18, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mr. Phipps was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Churchton and attended the former Southern High School in Lothian. He served as a fireman 1st class in the Navy from 1946 to 1948.
He worked for 38 years as an engineer at the Naval Academy until retiring in 1983. He then worked as an engineer at St. John's College in Annapolis, retiring again in 2001.
Mr. Phipps was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Bowie and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His interests were gardening and spending time with his family.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Phipps, whom he married
July 3, 1950; two daughters, Sandra Phipps Keyes of Onancock, Va., and Cheryl Phipps Yff of Annapolis; two sons, David Evans Phipps of Onley, Va., and Dr. Keith Edward Phipps of Ocala, Fla.; and a sister, Elizabeth Howes of Lusby; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Louise Vittone.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at All Saints Lutheran Church in Bowie. Burial will be private.

Knut Aarsand, franchise owner, dies
Knut Jardar Aarsand, revered as a successful, charitable businessman, died Oct. 19, 2002 at his home in Arnold. The cause of death was not available.
The 62-year-old Rugby Hall resident was born in Norway in January 1940, the son of the late Jardar and Gudrun Aarsand. When he was 7 months old the family moved to the United States, settling in Tenafly, N.J.
A graduate of Tenafly High School, he attended Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, W.Va., and Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va., graduating with a bachelor's degree in history and English in 1961.
In 1967, following service as a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps, he earned a law degree from George Washington University.
In 1966 he became the founder and chairman of Aarsand Management, a franchisee of KFC and Taco Bell Restaurants, and a member of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. In the early 1970s, he became an Anne Arundel County Real Estate broker and in 1982, he developed his first KFC restaurant franchise in Havre de Grace.
Since that time, the company has expanded to include Taco Bell and Pizza Hut franchises operating 56 restaurants in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
He was active throughout his life in civil and charitable affairs. In 1986 he founded the Chief Executive Officers Investment Club and was also a founding board member of the Second National Federal Savings Bank of Annapolis. He was also a member and former director of the Annapolis Rotary Club, a member of the Board of Visitors and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
"I will remember him as a charitable and giving person, " said Bill Hancock, business associate and friend. "He was completely committed to the communities where his restaurants are located, helping the Boys and Girls Clubs and Scouts, among others, receive over $100, 000 in grants, just in this past year alone."
In 1970, he became a member of the Annapolis Yacht Club and served as chairman of its membership committee.
In 1991 he was named chairman of the USS Annapolis Commissioning Committee, a two-year project culminating with the arrival of the nuclear powered submarine in Annapolis.
Earlier this month, his service to the Annapolis Yacht Club was recognized with the presentation of the Arnold C. Gay Award, conferred on the member who made an outstanding contribution to the club's success.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Clark of Rugby Hall, Arnold; one son, Kurt Aarsand; one daughter, Krista Aarsand Bedford; one brother, Torben Aarsand of Hagerstown; and two grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1120 Spa Road, Annapolis. A memorial service will be held at the Annapolis Yacht Club from 1 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 10.

Fred Malmrose
Fred Malmrose, 94, a resident of Cambridge and formerly of Annapolis, died Oct. 8 at his home.
Mr. Malmrose's parents, Gotthard and Anna Malmros, emigrated from Sweden in 1902 to New York City, where he was born at home on Leap Year's Day, Feb. 29, 1908.
He attended public schools in Southampton, N.Y., and graduated from Mount Hermon Academy in Massachusetts.
He had a varied and interesting career spanning several fields. The final highlight of his career was as account manager and project engineer for the Walworth Co., where he spent more than two years involved in the construction of the World Trade Center in New York City.
In 1992 he and his wife moved to Annapolis to be closer to their family. He was a lifelong boating enthusiast and fisherman.
Mr. Malmrose was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Alvina Jacobsen Malmrose.
Surviving are three daughters, Janice Tuner of Taylors Island in Dorchester County, Judith Kinne of Nashua, N.H., and Jacquelyn M."Jackie" Wolfle of Cambridge and formerly of Annapolis; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three siblings.
A memorial service will be held Oct. 29 in Seneca, S.C. Remembrances may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 214 Northampton Road, Seneca, SC 29672.
