Charles Britton
Charles "Charlie" Britton, 57, a resident of Mesa, Ariz., for 30 years and formerly of Annapolis, died of cancer Oct. 18 at home after a yearlong illness.
Born July 23, 1949, in Annapolis, Mr. Britton worked at the former Drug Fair in Eastport and was a manager at Frys Grocery Store in Arizona for 25 years. His interests included playing bingo, dancing and listening to music.
Surviving are his wife, Lorraine Britton, whom he married
Dec. 26, 1973; two daughters, Kim Britton of Mesa and Ann Britton of Oregon; three brothers, Jimmy Britton of Annapolis, Bobby Britton of Stevensville and Keith Britton of Belington, W.Va.; his twin sister, Sharon Grice of Arizona, and another sister, Linda Goehring of Cape St. Claire; and two grandchildren.

Avis Doriot
Avis Martin Doriot, 91, of Eastport for seven years and previously of Sierra Vista, Ariz., died of emphysema Oct. 22, 2006 at home after a 10-year illness.
Mrs. Doriot was born in Navasota, Texas, on Sept. 24, 1915, and was a Civil Service employee for 30 years. She worked as an intelligence specialist with the former Signal Corps of the Army.
She loved bingo and played at various locations over the years. She also was an avid reader, enjoyed puzzles and liked gardening. Until recently she attended yoga at Golden Heart.
A former Army wife, she lived in occupied Japan; Bangkok, Thailand; Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Lima, Ohio; and for 20 years in Falls Church, Va.
She was simple and elegant, never giving up on life and managing her illnesses with a quiet resolve, her family said.
Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis Emmett of Eastport and Janis Greenwood of Lawrence-ville, Ga.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Burial is private. Donations may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Ananpolis, MD 21401.
Reginald Gibson
Reginald Travers "Hoot" Gibson, 78, a resident of Hillsmere Shores in Annapolis for 38 years and previously of Eastport, died of a heart attack Oct. 21, 2006 at home.
Born Oct. 11, 1928, in Queen Anne, Mr. Gibson graduated in 1945 from Tri-County High School in Queen Anne and attended the University of Maryland from 1953 to 1955.
He was a private first class in the Army and Army Reserve from 1951 to 1956 and received the Bronze Star medal while in the Korean War.
He worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1948 to 1951 and for the Maryland State Police from 1958 to 1979 with 10 years of service as a uniformed trooper. For 13 years he was in the Executive Protection Division, providing service for governors J. Millard Tawes, Marvin Mandel, Spiro T. Agnew and Harry R. Hughes.
From 1979 to 1980 he was a mail handler for the Post Office in Annapolis. From 1980 to 1994 Mr. Gibson was a patrolman, sergeant and then a lieutenant before retiring as a deputy chief of police for the Naval Academy security department. Subsequently he was a baliff from 1995 to 2000 for the District Court in Annapolis.
Mr. Gibson, who enjoyed playing soccer all his life and was a soccer and baseball coach in Hillsmere Shores, was instrumental in establishing the Peninsula Athletic League soccer program in the 1970s. He coached his children in soccer and softball. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 304.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Gibson, whom he married
June 24, 1967; one son, Timothy T. Gibson of Charleston, S.C., one daughter, Linda J. Barbera of Waterford, N.Y.; one brother, Robert H. Gibson of Queen Anne; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Violet G. Pratt and Margaret R. Gillespie.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Inurnment is private.
Mary LaVoie
Mary Margaret LaVoie, 84, a two-year resident of Durham, N.C., and formerly of Cape St. Claire since 1959, died of natural causes Oct. 19, 2006 at The Forest at Duke retirement community.
Mrs. LaVoie was born Jan. 29, 1922, and reared in Monongah, W.Va. She attended West Virginia Business College for two years.
She retired in 1987 from the Maryland Court of Appeals, where she was a clerk. Her interests included gardening. She was a member of St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church.
In 1943 she married
Roland LaVoie who died in 1990. Surviving is one sister, Rose Lico of Roseville, Mich.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, where services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Glen Haven Memorial Park.

George Mitchell
A memorial service for George Harold "Buck" Mitchell, 77, a resident of Annapolis for more than 30 years, was held this morning at the Maryland Veterans cemetery chapel in Crownsville. Burial followed in the cemetery.
Mr. Mitchell died Oct. 16, 2006 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The cause of death is unavailable.
He was born June 30, 1929, in Wilson, N.C., and attended Charles L. Coon High School there. He served in the Army during the Korean War and later worked as a plumber.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, the National Rifle Association and the American Legion.
Surviving are his sister, Christine Batts Carter of Annapolis, and several nieces and nephews.

Melissa Phillips
Melissa Virginia Smoot Phillips, 87, a resident of Edgewater for 34 years and formerly of Silver Spring, died of natural causes Oct. 22, 2006 at Community General Hospital in Harrisburg, Pa.
Born June 20, 1919, in Washington, D.C., Mrs. Phillips was reared in Bethesda and Garrett Park in Montgomery County, where she was a Girl Scout and took ballet and piano lessons. She graduated in 1937 from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, where she played in the orchestra, sang with the Opera Club and was on the basketball and volleyball teams.
In 1941 she graduated from Susquehanna University with a bachelor of science degree in music and was a member of the Motet Choir, Sigma Alpha Iota national professional music fraternity and the Women's Athletic Association. She also sang in the choir at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Phillips worked for the former Evening Star newspaper, The National Geographic Society and Reconstruction Finance Corp. and was accompanist for William Webster Vocal Studios in Washington, D.C. Following her marriage, she was organist, choir member and director at several churches. During the 1950s and 1960s she was active in many organizations in Montgomery County.
As a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Annapolis, she sang in the choir and belonged to the Hope Circle, National Lutheran Home Auxiliary and the Lutheran Church Women.

Ralston Dale Phillips who died May 5, 2004.
Surviving are one son, Mark Smoot Phillips of Bowie; two daughters, Angela Dale Phillips Kelly of Harrisburg, Pa., and Marcella Croft Phillips Theeman of Ashland, Ore.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin's Lutheran Church, where the funeral will be at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.

George Rives
George Lynn Rives, 66, a nine-year resident of Ocean City and formerly of Severna Park, died of cancer Oct. 18, 2006 at home after a five-year illness.
Born Jan. 10, 1940, in Detroit, Mr. Rives was reared in Ponca City, Okla., and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1958.
He served in the Navy from 1958 to 1962 where he was a radioman 1st class. He was a self-employed appliance distributor.
Surviving are his wife, Judith Rives, whom he married
March 27, 1983; one daughter, Pamela White of Severna Park; three sons, Jeff Rives of Elkridge, Chris Rives of Street and James Rives of Severna Park; one stepdaughter, Melissa Saylor of Charlotte Hall; one stepson, David McGuigan of Millsboro, Del.; and 15 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 5976 Old Washington Road, Elkridge. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville.
