John Smith
John A. Smith, Sr., 44, a recent resident of Cambridge in Dorchester County and formerly of Pasadena, died at his home May 28, 2000. The cause of death has not been determined.
Mr. Smith was born and raised in Baltimore and attended public schools in Baltimore and Pasadena, where he moved at the age of 14.
He was a master carpenter by trade and had worked for several construction companies.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Wade Smith; his parents, Paul Franklin and Betty Dean Smith of Harmony in Caroline County; two sons, John A. Smith Jr. of Glen Burnie and Jason A. Smith of Arnold; two brothers, Paul F. Smith Jr. of Harmony and Curtis A. Smith Sr. of Pasadena; and one sister, Laura L. Burget of Ferndale.
Funeral services will be private. Arrangements are by the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Elsie Archer
Elsie Southerland Archer, 89, a former resident of Ginger Cove Retirement Center in Annapolis, died Sept. 25, 2000 at her home in Virginia Beach, Va., after a short illness.
Mrs. Archer lived in Annapolis for 40 years until August of this year when she relocated to Virginia Beach.
Mrs. Archer was born and raised in Durham, N.C., and was the widow of retired Adm. Robert J. Archer, a 1928 Naval Academy graduate. They were active members of the Annapolis Sailing Club for many years.
She worked for Maryland Senators Edward P. Thomas and John Derr for a total of 17 years until her retirement in 1982 at the age of 81. Mrs. Archer was also a member of the Auxiliary of Anne Arundel Medical Center and contributed many hours of volunteer time at the Clothes Box, the auxiliary's resale shop.
Surviving are two sons, William Thomas Rigsbee and Robert Henry Rigsbee, both of San Francisco, Calif; her daughter, Ann Rigsbee Glenn of Virginia Beach, Va.; her sister, Merle Hess of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A private graveside service will be held at the Naval Academy Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hollomon and Brown Funeral Home in Virginia Beach.
Gladys Brown
Gladys Eileen Brown, 94, of Edgewater, died Oct. 10, 2000 of heart failure at the home of her daughter, Nancy Mack in Westminster.
Born July 5, 1906, in Ashtabula, Ohio, Mrs. Hicks had lived with her daughter, Bobbie Stone, in Edgewater since 1953.
She retired in 1978 after 21 years as a hostess with the former Howard Johnson's on Route 50 and Old Mill Bottom Road.
She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the "Peppers" ladies club in Edgewater. Mrs. Brown enjoyed needlework.
She is survived by two other daughters as well, Etta Deene Terry of Ashtabula and M. Kae Cunningham of Glen Arm; one sister, Jeanne Boyle of Ashtabula; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Marion Willis.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., where funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Lakemont cemetery in Davidsonville. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
Mary Jane Fenwick
Mary Jane Fenwick, 95, a resident of Crofton for 20 years, died Oct. 12, 2000 at Fernbrook Assisted Living Center in Odenton. She had dementia.
Mrs. Fenwick was born in Ambler, Pa., on Dec. 12, 1904. Educated in Ambler, she was a homemaker and the former owner and operator of the Knitting Nook in Media, Pa.
She was very active in the garden club in Philadelphia, Pa. and enjoyed gardening and painting.
Her husband, William B. Fenwick, died in 1984.
Survivors include two sons, William Fenwick of Gambrills and John Fenwick of Mesa, Ariz.; her brother, Oscar H. Stillwagon of Ambler; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial will be private. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home of Gambrills.
Harold Martin
Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Harold Eugene Martin, 68, of Odenton, died of a heart attack Oct. 6, 2000 at his home.
Born Oct. 2, 1932, in Muncie, Ind., Sgt. Martin retired from the military after 24 years of service. He then worked for 14 years for the U.S. Postal Service. He received a meritorious service award and other honors during his career.
His interests included horticulture, the outdoors and culinary arts.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Martin, whom he married
in December 1952; two daughters, Christy Martin-Scott of Bowie and Toni Brown of Baltimore; one brother, Michael Martin of Muncie; and three sisters, Cheryl Kauffman of Baltimore, and Marifrances Phillips and Carliss Mitchel of Muncie.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road, Gambrills, where the funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville.
Thomas Rhodes
Thomas Henry Rhodes, 40, of Chesapeake Beach, died Oct. 12, 2000 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick of respiratory distress after a bout with throat cancer.
Mr. Rhodes was born Oct. 26, 1959, in Riverdale. He worked for Dorma Glass in Upper Marlboro.
He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and was a championship dart league member. He once pitched a no hit slowpitch men's softball game. His interests also included baseball, fishing, boating, woodworking and music.
He was the son of the late Phil Rhodes and was formerly married
to Michelle Rhodes of Edgewater.
Surviving are his mother, Jean McCraith of Annapolis; one son, Nathan Rhodes, and one daughter, Nicole Rhodes, both of Edgewater; one brother, Charles D. Rhodes of Augusta, Ga.; and three sisters, Theresa Rzegocki of Pasadena, Lori McCarthy-Stedd of Lothian and Patricia Foster of Church Hill; and his fiancee, Christie Robbins of Chesapeake Beach.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Road, Galesville, with services at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.

Charlie Joyce
Charlie George "Junior" Washington Joyce Jr., 74, of Annapolis and previously of Baltimore, died of lung cancer Oct. 17, 2000 at the Chesapeake Hospice House in Linthicum after a seven month illness.
Mr. Joyce was born July 22, 1926, in Roanoke, Va., and attended public schools in Elkridge, W.Va. He worked for the Powellton Coal Co. from 1944 to 1945 as a conveyor. He then served in the Navy as a seaman and received the American Theater ribbon and the Victory medal.
He was a member of Independent Order of Good Samarians and Daughters of Samaria, Mount Tabor Lodge 59 and was chief of the subordinate Lodge 59. He also was the state grand chief of State Lodge 11 and grand attorney of the National Grand Lodge.
Mr. Joyce was a member of the American Rifle Association and the American Legion.
He was divorced from Norma J. Radcliffe Joyce in 1951. On Aug. 15, 1971, he was married
to Katherine A. Joyce.
Surviving are three sons, John Sims and Carl and William Gray; six daughters, Marsha and Christine Brown, Cynthia Robinson, Latitia Jones, Althea Williams and Belinda Gray; one sister, Josephine Branham; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was the brother of the late John Nathaniel Joyce and Janie Tyler.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Miller's Metropolitan Chapel, 1922 Forest Drive. A Christian wake will be from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mount Olive A.M.E. Church, 2 Hicks Ave., where funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville.
