James L. Dollar

James L. Dollar, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Anne Arundel Community College since May 1999, died of apparent heart failure Friday at North Arundel Hospital.

The 61-year-old Arnold resident joined the college as an instructor in 1965 and won tenure as a professor in 1971. He served as chairman of the Humanities Division, professor of humanities and coordinator of humanities, philosophy and speech.

In 1992, he was named acting assistant dean of the division, becoming assistant dean and chairman in 1993.

From 1996 to 1997, he was acting vice president for academic and student affairs. He became assistant dean and chairman of humanities.

He also served as director of long-range planning and was chairman for numerous academic and administrative committees.

Mr. Dollar received an award from the college Board of Trustees, served as faculty marshal and the grand marshal for college graduations. He received awards for excellence in teaching from the Student Government Association and the State Board for Community College. The SGA also presented him with its "Unsung Hero" award.

He previously taught at the Severn School and Duvall High School in Prince George's County.

Born in Chicago, on Sept. 4, 1939, Mr. Dollar grew up in Bay Ridge and graduated from Annapolis High School where he played football and lacrosse and wrestled. He received a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy from the University of Virginia which he attended on a full scholarship and played goalie on the lacrosse team.

He took graduate courses in philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he coached junior varsity lacrosse. He received his master of arts degree in American studies from the University of Maryland where he had completed all work but the dissertation towards a doctorate.

Active with the Peninsula Athletic League, he was a coach and administrator in county youth and high school lacrosse programs for the past 20 years.

He was divorced from Barbara Dollar Brashears of Annapolis in 1987.

Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Munger; six children, Allison Dollar of Los Angeles, Laurel Sievold of Pleasant Hill, Calif., Christopher Dollar of Cape St. Claire, Jason Dollar of Los Angeles, Melissa Munger McLay of Bethesda and Joshua Munger of Chicago; his mother, Eleanor Dollar of the home; three siblings, Patricia Houghton of Chestertown, Bruce Dollar of Boston and Dr. Allen Dollar of Atlanta, Ga.; and one grandchild.

A private remembrance gathering will be held at the college from 4 to 6 p.m. March 5. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a memorial scholarship being set up at the college.

College President Martha Smith and other college officials were meeting this morning to plan the memorial, and could not be reached for comment.

Harry Albert

Harry Joseph Albert, 63, a resident of Severna Park for 23 years and previously of New Carrollton, died of heart failure Feb. 26, 2001 at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.

Mr. Albert was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on May 14, 1937. He graduated from Drexel University with a degree in electrical engineering and served in the Army Reserves.

He was an electrical engineer for the National Security Agency and a member of the Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park.

He was formerly married to Joan Parvis of Severna Park. Surviving are two sons, James F. Albert of Columbia and Steven R. Albert of San Francisco, Calif.; his mother, Pauline Albert, and his brother, Rowland Albert, both of Columbia; and his companion, Katherine Kirby of Annapolis.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Rosslyn, Pa..

Theodore Brown

Theodore Brown Jr., 57, of Annapolis, died of cancer Feb. 24, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Known as "Junior, " "Ted" and "June Bug, " Mr. Brown was born Feb. 14, 1944, in Annapolis and attended Wiley H. Bates High School. He served in the Army as a sergeant.

He worked at the Naval Academy and the Annapolis Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Mr. Brown was a member of Adams United Methodist Church, the Elegance Social Club and the International Laryngectomy Association of Southern Maryland.

On Nov. 26, 1983, he married Nelsa Downs Brown. Also surviving are three sons, Michael Brown, Majestic Gough III and Raoul J. Graves, all of Annapolis; two daughters, Theodora "Tammy" Brown of Fayettevile, N.C., and Nicole E. Jones of Millersville; three brothers, Albert, Wilton and Joseph Wright, all of Annapolis; three sisters, Mary Smith of Glen Burnie and Catherine Boyd and Shirley Jones of Annapolis; and five grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Annie and Theodore Brown Sr. and the brother of the late George A. "Buck" Brown.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at Mount Moriah A.M.E. Church, 2204 Bay Ridge Ave., where a Christian wake will be at 6 p.m. Funeral services will be at noon Friday at Adams United Methodist Church, 937 Bayard Road, Lothian. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

Alfred Holland

Alfred Herman Holland, 79, of Annapolis, died of a heart attack Feb. 25, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Born May 8, 1921, in Prince George's County, Mr. Holland attended Prince George's County public schools. He worked for 25 years at the Crownsville Hospital Center, retiring as supervisor of food services in the central kitchen in 1982.

He was a longtime member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in the Waterbury area where he was named "Father of the Church." He also was an usher and trustee and served on the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. He belonged to the United Methodist Men and the Men's Choir and various other action committees.

In 1955 he was married to Gertrude Elizabeth Holland. Also surviving are three sons, Stanley and Calvin Holland of Bowie and Tyrone Holland of Annapolis; six daughters, Carolyn Henson, Marcel Ross and Sheila Jones, all of Glen Burnie, Vanessa Queen of Crownsville, Debbie Holland of Bowie and Kim Holland of Annapolis; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are one brother, Charles Holland of Croom; and four sisters, Margaret Walker, Lucille Blanford and Sadie Owens of Annapolis and Myrtle Wiseman of Croom.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at Nichols Bethel United Methodist Church, Route 175 and Murray Ave., Odenton, where at Christian wake will be at 11 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

Donald Howard

Donald Wayne "Don" Howard, 66, a resident of Shady Side since 1963 and previously of New York state and Pittsburgh, Pa., died at his home of cancer Feb. 27, 2001.

Mr. Howard was born in Pennsylvania on May 20, 1934, and attended Shaler High School in Pennsylvania.

For the past 12 years, he owned and operated VIC Quality Printing Co. in Deale.

He was a member of the Jubilee Christian Fellowship in Cambridge, Deale Elks Lodge 2528, the Chesapeake Bay chapter of the Hudson-Essex Terreplaine Auto Club, the Antique Automobile Club of America and the Lost in the 50s Custom Car Club.

Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Shirley Jones Howard; three sons, Donn William Howard of Waianae, Hawaii, Scott Robert Howard of Pahrump, Nev., and Barry Allen Howard of Sharon, Wis.; one daughter, Brenda Howard Paddy of Shady Side; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert William Howard.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Road, Galesville, where services will be at 10 a.m. tomrorow. Burial will be at the Woodfield Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

Milton Lunga

Milton A. Lunga, 77, formerly of Crofton, died Feb. 26, 2001 at his home in Ocean Pines.

Born in Binghamton, N.Y., Mr. Lunga was a veteran of World War II. He worked in sales and sales management until his retirement in December 1998.

Active in theater groups in Ocean Pines and Crofton, Mr. Lunga served as president of the Crofton Players Guild. As a young man he played semi-professional basketball.

He and his wife of 53 years, Mary Lunga, moved to Ocean Pines 23 years ago. Mrs. Lunga died in October 2000.

Surviving are his five children, Leslie Lunga of Bishopville, Tracy Lunga-Rawls of Silver Spring, Milton F. Lunga of Annapolis, Eileen Lunga of Baltimore and Patrick Lunga of Ocean Pines; and four grandchildren. His brother Frank Lunga died in 1972.

Visitation is from 2:30 to 5 p.m. today at Ullrich Funeral Home, 10902 Ocean Gateway, Route 50, Berlin. A memorial Mass will be said at 1 p.m. May 5 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Route 589 and Beauchamp Road, in Ocean Pines.

Memorial contributions may be made to John Huss Presbyterian Church, 47 Glenwood Ave., Binghamton, NY 13905.
