Barbara Veltman
Barbara Sawtell Veltman, 84, of Severna Park, died on Friday, June 1, 2001, of congestive heart failure at her home where she had lived for more than 50 years.
Born in Topeka, Kansas, she attended the University of Wisconsin.
An accomplished flower arranger, Mrs. Veltman was a member of the Severn River Garden Club, serving as president from 1967 to 1969. She received numerous regional and national awards for her artistic flower exhibits including the Alice Peace award in 1964.
She was a member of the Caritas Society of St. John's College and of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis.
She was an avid sailor and was a member of the Annapolis Yacht Club and the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake. She also was an enthusiastic bridge player and square dancer.
Her husband, Preston L. Veltman, whom she married
in 1938 and who was her sailing, bridge and square dance partner, died in 2000.
Survivors include one son, Dr. John Veltman of Stevensville; one daughter, Julia Parry of Denver; one sister, Julia Foley of San Mateo, Calif; one brother, James Sawtell of Lacey, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
There were no services.

Lewis Boarman
Lewis L. "Lew" Boarman, 80, a 31-year resident of Tracys Landing, died of lymphoma at home June 20, 2001 after a long illness.
Mr. Boarman was born May 2, 1921, in Washington, D.C., and graduated from McKinley Technical High School there.
During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. Among his decorations were the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theater Medal.
He was employed by the former Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. and later at AT&T; , retiring as a staff supervisor in 1972.
Mr. Boarman enjoyed golf, auto racing and auto mechanics, and gardening.
He was a member of the Stalling-Williams American Legion Post 206; Elks Lodge 2528, where he was a charter member; College Park Moose Lodge 435; and Bowie Disabled American Veterans Post 7.
He and Ruth A. Boarman were married
in 1956.
Also surviving are one daughter, Sharon Beavers of Sunderland in Calvert County; one stepdaughter, Marilynn Bersoff of McLean, Va.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Rausch Funeral Home, 8325 Mount Harmony Lane, Owings, with a memorial service immediately following. Burial will be private.

Frederick Fogler Jr.
Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Frederick H. "Fred" Fogler Jr., 91, of Annapolis, died June 19, 2001 at the Spa Creek Center, Genesis Eldercare Network, after a brief illness.
Born June 27, 1909, in Baltimore, Chief Fogler served for 30 years as a musician in the Navy band. He was a cornet soloist and assistant conductor, serving between 1928 and 1957.
On April 25, 1993, he was featured as "Volunteer of the Week" for his "musical ministry." For more than 15 years, he visited various nursing homes and senior centers, playing the piano and singing.
He was a member of Weems Creek Baptist Church, where he was the organist and choir director. Previously, he was a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was organist for 30 years and occasionally served as choir director.
During his early years in Annapolis he also entertained at carnivals and minstrel shows sponsored by local fire companies.
Chief Fogler was a 33rd degree Mason and past grand master of Annapolis Masonic Lodge 89. He also was a member of the Past Masters Association of Baltimore City and was organist of the Annapolis chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
He played the organ, piano, cornet, trumpet, flute and drums and also directed a dance band. He lived independently until suffering a fall in January.
His wife of 46 years, Marjorie Ward Fogler, died in 1991.
Surviving are two daughters, Carol Lee Fogler of Columbia and Linda Messerschmid of Annapolis; and four siblings.
Visitation will be from 11 to 1 p.m. Saturday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., followed by funeral services at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
James Fahnestock
James David Fahnestock, 48, formerly of Annapolis for 20 years, died June 19, 2001 of natural causes, at his Vienna, Va., home after a long illness.
Mr. Fahnestock was born Feb. 24, 1953, in Chambersburg, Pa., and graduated from Parkdale High School in Greenbelt. He received a bachelor of science degree from Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and a master's degree from the University of Arizona at Tucson.
He was employed with the Central Intelligence Agency in McLean, Va., where he worked until approximately two months ago.
He was a member and elder at McLean Presbyterian Church and a former deacon of the Annapolis Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Fahnestock enjoyed sailing the Chesapeake. An avid musician, he played with the brass group in his McLean church. He enjoyed fishing and photography.
Surviving are his wife, Marcy Appel Fahnestock, whom he married
in 1985; one son, Jayme E. Block of New York Mills, N.Y.; his parents, James E. and Betty Saunders Fahnestock of Chambersburg; and one sister, Annette M. "Ann" Smith of Newville, Pa.
Viewing will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Springs Road, Chambersburg, immediately followed by funeral services. Burial in Norland cemetery will follow.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at McLean Presbyterian Church, 1020 Balls Hill Road, McLean.
John Johnston III
John Wesley Johnston III, 43, of Millersville, died of congestive heart failure May 5, 2001 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Mr. Johnston was an entrepreneur and a co-founder of Onsite Technologies, a technical contracting firm in Columbia since 1995. Previously, he worked as a sales manager in the technology services field and as a stockbroker for Shearson Lehman.
Born Aug. 27, 1957, in Biloxi, Miss., he was the son of Jean and John W. Johnson Jr. of Severna Park and Fort Lauderdale. He graduated from Severna Park High School in 1975 and attended the University of Maryland at College Park and the University of South Florida at Tampa.
As a youngster, he played sports with the Green Hornets and was an Eagle Scout. He belonged to the Kappa Alpha fraternity. His interests included water sports, travel, boating and cooking.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Evelyn Quinton Johnston, whom he married
in 1992; two children, Jacob and Irie Johnston, of the home; his brother, J. Michael Johnston of Medina, Wash; and two sisters, Judy Davidson and Kim Niederberg of Severna Park.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Historic Chapel of St. Paul on Crownsville Road, Crownsville, followed by visitation at the family home from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
