Wade Elrod
Retired Army Lt. Col. T. Wade Elrod, 64, of Crofton, died of a pulmonary embolism June 24, 2001 at North Arundel Hospital.
Born and raised in Anderson, S.C., Lt. Col. Elrod received a bachelor's degree from Clemson University in 1956 and a master's degree from the University of South Carolina in 1974.
He served in the Army for nearly 26 years. His service included two combat tours in Vietnam, for which he was awarded the Silver Star, four Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. He also served in Germany in various assignments and at many stateside posts, ending his career at the Pentagon.
After retiring in 1987, he and his wife of 42 years, Gail Franklin Elrod, settled in Crofton, where they have lived for the past 20 years.
Following his military career, he was a home inspector with Home Tech Information Systems in Bethesda, and the director of training and education for the past nine years.
He served as president of the Home Inspectors of Maryland and as a committee member for the national organization, and a member of the board of directors of the local chapter of the American Society of Home Inspectors. He also played a pivotal role in recent state legislation regarding the licensing and certification of home inspectors.
A member of the First Baptist Church of Crofton, he served for 20 years in various positions of lay leadership, from chairman of the finance committee to adult Sunday School teacher, to chairman of the board of deacons. He was also a past grand officer of the Masons, and was a Shriner.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Bradley S. Elrod of Lansdale, Pa.; one daughter, Kyena E. Cornelius of Lorton, Va.; his mother, Lucile Murphy Elrod, and one sister, Imogene Cromer, both of Anderson; and five grandchildren. He was the son of the late T. Hubert Elrod.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Services will be held at 4 p.m. July 18 at First Baptist Church of Crofton.. Interment will be on July 19 at Arlington National Cemetery, with family and friends meeting at 10:30 a.m. at the Administration Building.

Margaret Herman
Margaret Gropp "Peggy" Herman, 83, of Annapolis, died of chronic obsructive pulmonary disease June 22, 2001 at the Spa Creek Center, Genesis ElderCare Network.
A homemaker, Mrs. Herman was born Nov. 24, 1917, in Beaver Falls, Pa., and moved to Washington, D.C., where she graduated from St. Patrick's Catholic School. She moved to Holland Point near Rose Haven in 1960 and to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1970. Later she resided in Morrisville, Va., and came to Fairhaven in 1989.
Her interests included reading.
She was married
on Aug. 27, 1937, to Leander Hazen "Lee" Herman Sr., who died in December 1982.
Surviving are one son, Leander H. "Lee" Herman Jr. of New York City; two daughters, Judith H. Steverson and Margaret Ullrich, both of Fairhaven; three granddaughters; and two great-grand-children.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Rausch Funeral Home, Mount Harmony Lane, Owings, where services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Morrisville United Methodist Church cemetery in Morrisville.

Ronald Howard
Ronald S. Howard Sr., 66, a 30-year resident of Riva, died June 25, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of complications of surgery.
Known affectionately as "Pop Pop, " Mr. Howard was born April 30, 1935, in Washington, D.C., where he graduated from St. Dominic's High School.
He retired in 1995 after working for 40 years as a highway inspector for the District of Columbia.
He was a former member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church in southwest Washington, a member of the Knights of Columbus in Bowie and an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville. Movies and gardening were among his interests.
Surviving are his wife, Joan M. Howard, whom he married
on Aug. 8, 1959; one son, Ronald S. Howard Jr. of Deale; two daughters, Kathleen Potts of Edgewater and Marlene Mueller of Riva; one brother, Robert A. Howard of Riva; and five grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late William F. Howard.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A Mass of Christian burial will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville. Burial will be in Lakemont Cemetery.
Standish McCleary
Standish McCleary Jr., 91, who retired on June 8 as senior vice president of Legg Mason Wood Walker Inc. in Baltimore after a 73-year career, died of congestive heart failure June 21, 2001 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Mr. McCleary had been a resident of Key Biscayne, Fla., since the 1970s and Ocean City.
Born in Baltimore, he first bought shares of stock while attending Baltimore City College. After high school, he worked for the former McCubbin, Goodrich and Co., writing stock prices on a chalkboard as a "board boy." He became a full-time broker in 1936, and supplemented his income by loading Railway Express freight cars at night until 1941 when he bought a farm.
The McCubbin firm became Legg and Co., and merged in 1970 with Mason and Co. In 1973 Legg Mason and Co. acquired Wood Walker and Co.
Known for his astute investing and careful spending, he was a resident partner in Legg and Co., and got the firm to open an office in the Baltimore suburbs, a first for the city.
He was one of the largest shareholders of Legg Mason when the firms merged.
His interests included ocean fishing and swimming. In the 1980s he rescued a drowning swimmer in the Atlantic near Ocean City.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Juanita Proctor McCleary; five children, Ann McCleary Stewart of Sherwood Forest, Isabel McCleary Carter of Winston-Salem, N.C., Rose McCleary Alexander of Richmond, Va., Joanna McCleary Pitcher of Arlington, Va., and Standish McCleary III of Portland, Ore.; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was the father of Virginia McCleary Loring, who died in 1963.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. David's Episcopal Church, Roland Avenue, Baltimore.

Marion Smith
Marion Elizabeth Jones Smith, 78, of Annapolis and formerly of Glen Burnie, died of respiratory failure June 24, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mrs. Smith was born June 14, 1923, on Deal Island in Somerset County, daughter of the late Monie and Irene Jones. She was a homemaker who enjoyed playing bingo, sewing, fishing and crabbing.
Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Carroll W. Smith Sr.; three sons, Donald J. Collins Sr., Carroll W. Smith Jr. and James W. Smith Sr., all of Glen Burnie; one daughter, Judith T. Smith of Dunkirk; one brother, John D. Jones of Linthicum; three sisters, Phyllis Smith of Dundalk, Lucille Lawson of Princess Anne and Louise Fink of Baltimore; and five grandchildren.
Viewing is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 tonight at McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home, 3204 Mountain Road, Pasadena, where services are at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville.
John Williamson
John Baseman "Jay" Williamson, 66, formerly of Severna Park, died June 23, 2001 at his home in Tequesta, Fla., after an extended illness.
Mr. Williamson was born in Cranford, N.J., and graduated from the Syracuse University School of Forestry in New York.
He resided in Severna Park for 37 years before moving to Tequesta in 1998. He worked for a wood products manufacturing firm as a sales representative and was president of his own construction company, building many homes in the Severna Park area.
He was a member of St. Charles Episcopal Church in Crownsville. He was one of the first volunteers at Hospice of the Chesapeake and served on the board of directors for many years, including as chairman, until moving to Florida.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Peggy Miller Williamson; three daughters, Cheryl Lynn Williamson of Annapolis, Lisa Williamson Aiello of Tequesta and Jennifer Beth Williamson of Park City, Utah; two sons, James Everett Williamson of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Michael John Williamson of Chicago; his mother, Eleanor James Williamson of Jupiter, Fla., and formerly of Severna Park; two sisters, Jean Williamson Danley of Willows, Calif., and Ann Williamson Stuart Floyd of Rome, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church in Tequesta. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by All County Funeral Home and Crematory in Stuart, Fla.
