Sandra Fitzgerald
Sandra Westgate Fitzgerald, 63, of Annapolis, died Aug. 11, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was born Jan. 3, 1938, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of the late Clyde J. and Viola Westgate. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago and a master's degree in public health administration from the University of Baltimore.
She worked for many years as an alcohol and substance abuse counselor.
She was formerly married
to John Fitzgerald.
Surviving are one brother, Bruce Westgate of Belmont, Mass.; one sister, Gail Westgate of St. Paul, Minn.; and four nephews.
A celebration of life gathering will be held from 4 to 8 tonight at First Presbyterian Church, 144 Conduit St. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.
Royston Harrison
Royston L. "Biggie" Harrison, 91, who retired from The Capital in 1985 after 62 years of employment, died of cancer Aug. 11, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness. He lived in Ocala, Fla., and maintained a home in Eastport.
Mr. Harrison began working for the newspaper in 1923 when, as a lad of 13, he answered a classified advertisement for an "office boy." At an even younger age, he delivered the newspaper to more than 800 subscribers in his native Eastport.
At the time, The Evening Capital, as the paper was once known, was located on Church Circle at Northwest street.
He quickly progressed from his office job to the print shop, where he spent the rest of his tenure. He was a composing room apprentice, and easily made the change from linotype machines and flat-bed presses to the present computerized system and high-speed press.
His first absence on the job was in April 1966 when a 24-hour virus broke his 43-year perfect attendence record. The Capital even noted this event in an article on April 14, 1966.
The newspaper also wrote an editorial on Oct. 2, 1985, on his retirement, noting his "amazing and commendable record. He was an anchor of experience and stability in our operation, and he will be missed. Biggie Harrison was a credit to The Capital, and remains a credit to this community."
Born Sept. 1, 1909, he was the son of the late Wililam Henry and Sadie Rose Tall Harrison. He left school after the eighth grade to earn a living after his father was injured.
Mr. Harrison was a longtime member and officer of Annapolis Elks Lodge 622. He also enjoyed traveling.
He was married
in 1937 to Irma Harrison who died in 1986. In 1987 he married
Wyvona M. "Pete" Harrison.
Also surviving are a stepson, Daile Sumrall of Tallahassee, Fla.; one brother, George E. Harrison of Eastport; and one sister, Virginia Hahn of Deland, Fla. He was the brother of the late Edger and William "Billy" Harrison.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., where services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Glen Haven cemetery in Glen Burnie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the cancer research charity of your choice.
Michael Machonis
Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Michael A. Machonis, 55, of Annapolis, died Aug. 11, 2001 in Ocean City. The cause of death was not available.
Master Sgt. Machonis was born Sept. 17, 1945, in Australia, and raised in Floral Park, N.Y. He previously lived in Severna Park and Air Force stations in California, Japan, Turkey, Mississippi and Texas. A Vietnam veteran, he retired after 23 years of service.
He currently was working for Simplex Corp. in electronics.
He enjoyed boating, fishing and Baltimore Ravens football.
Surviving are his wife, Cheryl A. Machonis; his daughter, Christine Gates of Annapolis; three sons, Joseph A. Machonis of Glen Burnie and Robert J. and Andrew T. Machonis of Annapolis; his parents, Edward and Iris Machonis of Fishkill, N.Y.; one brother, William Machonis of Fishkill; and four grandchildren. He was the father of the late Michael E. Machonis.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville.
Florence Mullen
A graveside memorial service for Florence Jarvis Mullen, 92, was held at Highland cemetery in Norwood, Mass., on July 28, 2001.
Mrs. Mullen died of natural causes July 9 at her daughter's home in Saugerties N.Y.
She was born in 1909 in St. Albans, Vt., to Allen and Bertha Jarvis. Her early years were spent in the Boston, Mass., area, where in 1932 she married
John Mullen of Glasgow, Scotland, who is now deceased.
A Girl Scout leader and president of various Catholic guilds, Mrs. Mullen was an avid volunteer. She had a rare type of blood and was called upon often by the American Red Cross to donate blood. She founded the Parents Association of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.
Upon retiring to Florida with her husband in 1971, she became active at the Park Residential Facility for Handicapped Children. She mentored a handicapped child for 11 years until he was adopted at age 15. For many years Mrs. Mullen participated in a clown band which entertained in schools and nursing homes in the St. Petersburg area.
For a brief period, she lived at Sunrise of Annapolis after living at Vantage House in Columbia for five years.
Surviving are three daughters, Jean O'Farrell of Annapolis, Patricia Klugherz of Sarasota, Fla., Susan Bolitzer of Saugerties; one son, John D. Mullen of Oakdale, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Her brother, Allen J. Jarvis, died two hours after she did.
Arrangements were by Seaman-Wilsey Funeral Home in Saugerties.
Brenda Penn
Brenda Joyce Penn, 59, died Aug. 12, 2001, of myleogysplastic syndrome, a rare blood disease, at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was diagnosed six months ago.
Born Sept. 9, 1941 in West Virginia, Mrs. Penn graduated from Chester, W.Va., High School in 1958. She worked as an administrative assistant at the U.S. Department of Justice.
She enjoyed camping and boating, fishing and crabbing with her family. She also liked to visit flea markets and enjoyed making crafts.
On Dec. 27, 1971, she was married
to Thomas A. Penn.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Christopher A. Penn of Davidsonville; three daughters, Sandra E. Mattingly of Huntingtown, Teresa I. Morrison of Davidsonville and Jennifer A. Dykes of Huntsville, Ala.; her mother, Beulah Dye of Davidsonville; one sister, Mary Jane Bonnevier of Salinas, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow in Lakemont cemetery in Davidsonville.

Ruth Rayburn
Ruth E. Rayburn, 76, of Waldorf and formerly of Lothian, died of cancer Aug. 13, 2001 at Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton.
Mrs. Rayburn was born Sept. 1, 1924, in Altoona, Pa., and raised in Washington, D.C., where she attended Catholic schools. After her marriage to Charles R. Rayburn, she lived in Los Angeles, Calif., for many years, before returning to the Washington area. Mr. Rayburn died in 1994.
A homemaker, she moved to southern Anne Arundel County in the late 1950s and resided in Lothian until moving to a senior citizens' comunity in Waldorf in 1990. She also worked as a waitress at the former Wayson's restaurant in Wayson's Corner, retiring in 1989 after 26 years. Mrs. Rayburn enjoyed ceramics and crafted porcelain dolls.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Frances Moore of Boonsboro, Cheryl D. Hurley of Stevensville and Carol J. Wayson of Lothian; one son, C. Stephen Rayburn of Lusby; one sister, Mary Esther McNeice of Friendly in Prince George's County; four brothers, Walter T. Behe Jr. of Paw Paw, W.Va., Alfred R. Behe of College Park, Francis X. Behe of Dunkirk and Brian S. Behe of Fort Washington; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at Rausch Funeral Home, 8325 Mount Harmony Lane, Owings, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m. when services will be held. Burial will be private.
