Sterling Johnson
Sterling Johnson, 85, a resident of Eastport for 59 years, died of heart failure Oct. 16, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 16, 1916, in Auburn, Ill., where he graduated from high school. He served in the Navy as a chief boatswain's mate, and at one time was on shore patrol duty in China. He also worked as a sailmaker and rigger at North Severn for the Naval Academy.
From 1953 to 1983 Mr. Johnson was a woodworker and finisher at Petrini's Boatyard.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Club and enjoyed refinishing and rehabbing furniture, making doll houses and sail making.
He was married
Aug. 15, 1942, to Florence Edith Avery Johnson, who died Nov. 26, 1999.
Surviving are one son, Van Johnson of New Egypt, N.J.; one daughter, Nancy Hilliard of Sparks in Baltimore County; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, where services will be at noon Friday. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Lillian Kail
Rose Lillian "Lil" Kail, 83, a lifelong resident of Annapolis, died Oct. 15, 2001 at Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness.
The daughter of the late Meyer and Evelyn Epstein, Mrs. Kail was born Jan. 12, 1917, in Baltimore and raised in Annapolis. She graduated from Annapolis High School.
She retired from the Maryland State Treasury, where she worked for more than 20 years.
Very active in local civic affairs, she volunteered with the Annapolis Chamber of Commerce and with what became the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau for 17 years.
In March 1989 she was named a "Volunteer of the Week" by The Capital for her diligent work for the tourism groups, as she handled more than 100 requests a day from students and adults for information.
She was president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Fleet Reserve Association Banch 24 from 1990 to 1991 and was involved with the Annapolis High School Class of 1935 and its reunion luncheons held quarterly since the class held its 50th reunion.
Mrs. Kail also volunteered at the Glenwood Hi-Rise where she sang and performed for the senior citizen residents. She enjoyed her vegetable garden and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her daughter, Paula J. Kail Rice of Annapolis; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn R. Smith of Annapolis; and two brothers, Carol V. Epstein of Annapolis and A. Leon Epstein of Gambrills. Her brother, H. Paul Epstein, was killed during World War II.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester St. Burial will be in the Quaker Burial Grounds in West River.

Nettie Meise
Nettie Virginia Meise of Stevensville, died Oct. 13, 2001 at her home. She was 83.
Mrs. Meise was born June 2, 1918, in Centreville and was the daughter of the late W. Edward and Margaret Coursey Thawley.She graduated from Centreville High School and then began working for the former Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. She was married
for 14 years to Edward Nichols before he died.
She then married
Royden Meise of Salisbury and went to work for Bell Atlantic. After he died in 1997, she moved to Stevensville where she was an active member of the Island Alliance Church.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Katherine Pippen of Rehoboth Beach, Del.
A memorial service will beheld at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Island Alliance Church in Stevensville. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Fuenral Home in Chester.

Margaret Lorton
Margaret Aretta Bates Scott Lorton, 89, of Athens, Ala., and formerly of Frankfort, Ind., died Oct. 15, 2001 in Athens.
Mrs. Lorton was born March 31, 1912, in Ironton, Ohio, daughter of John Marion and Minnie Minerva Carroll Bates. She was a 1931 graduate of Hanging Rock High School and was married
to James Cleve Scott, who is now deceased. The couple moved to Frankfort in 1937 where she was a proofreader for the Frankfort Morning Times newspaper. She also worked at the California Packing Co. and UniElectric.
She was marred in 1954 to Gordon M. Lorton, who died Jan. 15, 1982.
Mrs. Lorton was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Frankfort and a member of the Bates Family of Old Virginia Geneaological Society. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and creating handmade dolls.
Surviving are two sons, James Pembrook Scott of Crownsville and John Carroll Scott of Rogersville, Ala.; one daughter, Lois Dean Scott Anderson of Union, Mich.; one sister, Mary Annette Bates Frazer of Wheelersburg, Ohio; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of the late Walter, Ralph, Thomas and John Bates and Dorothy Darkes, Ruth Powers, Mildred Bates and Erma Chapman.
Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery in Franklin Furnance, Ohio. Arrangements are by Miller-Weston Funeral Home in Frankfort.
Gerald Swartz
Gerald Edwin Swartz, 77, a 22-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Green Bay, Wis., died of multiple sclerosis Oct. 14, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was diagnosed 20 years ago.
Born April 18, 1924, in White Pigeon, Mich., Mr. Swartz graduated from Ashland University in Ohio. He attended the Writers Institute at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and received a master's degree in education from Johns Hopkins University.
During World War II, he served in the Army from 1943 to 1945.
Mr. Swartz was employed with Westinghouse in the Quality Assurance Department until his retirement in 1986.
He enjoyed writing technical articles and poetry and reading the works of ancient Chinese poets and Henry David Thoreau. He also enjoyed visiting Rehobeth Beach, Del.
Mr. Swartz is survived by his wife, the former Patricia L. Murphy; three sons, Michael J. Swartz of Abingdon in Harford County, David Swartz of Wisconsin and John Swartz of Annapolis; two daughters, Karen Inez Swartz of Annapolis and Jerry Lynn Cox of Illinois; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Services and interment are private. Arrangements are by Kirkly-Ruddick Funeral Home in Glen Burnie.

Peggy Choate
Peggy Pritchett Choate, 62, a former public health nurse and a Mayo resident for 31 years, died of breast cancer Feb. 19, 2002 at her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Choate was born Sept. 16, 1939, in Johnson County, N.C., and graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. She received her bachelor and master's degrees in nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She was a member of the Pi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau international honor society of nurses.
On June 9, 1962, she was married
to Dr. William H. Choate. Since 1986 she was office manager for his medical practice. In the early 1960s she worked as a public health nurse in Baltimore County.
Mrs. Choate was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader in Mayo, served as president of the Mayo Elementary School PTA and president of the South River High School Band Boosters in the mid-1980s. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Annapolis and the Perennial Garden Club.
Her interests included reading, travel, gardening, photography, stitchery and observing nature on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Lisa Swank of Bel Air, Karen Ward of Silver Spring and Sarah Durbin of Shanghai, China; three sisters, Mary Anna Swinnerton and Elizabeth Stephan of Bend, Ore., and Dorothy Pritchett of Chamblee, Ga.; her mother, Anna M. Pritchett of Davidson, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Her father, the late Rev. Carl R. Pritchett, was a Presbyterian minister in Davidson and at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Bethesda.
Services and burial will be private. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.
