Andre Karns
Retired Army Lt. Col. Andre Maurice Karns, 75, a 35-year resident of Severna Park, died Feb. 20, 2002 at his son's home there of complications of a stroke.
Lt. Col. Karns was born on May 8, 1926, and raised in Manila, the Philippines. He moved to Washington, D.C., prior to the islands being invaded by Japan. He attended Staunton Military Academy in Virginia and was drafted in 1944. He was assigned to the 29th Infantry Division as an infantry mortar gunner in the Army, helping to liberate France in World War II. He was decorated with the Purple Heart in 1945 and honorably discharged as a corporal in 1946. He also received the Legion of Merit and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Following the war he received a bachelor of science degree and a master of arts degree in history, both with honors, from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, where he was in the ROTC.
He was commissioned a second lieutenant and served in the Army until retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1968. His tours of duty included West Point where he was a history professor as well as Europe and Korea. At Vientiane, Laos, he was Army attache and at the Pentagon he was on the Army General Staff.
Lt. Col. Karns then served 22 years with the State of Maryland Board of Trustees, State Universities and Colleges, rising from staff specialist to director of administration when he retired in 1990.
In 1966 he married
Robin Karns, who died in 1974.
Surviving are two sons, Michael A. Karns of Del Rio, Texas, and Peter T. Karns of Severna Park; one sister, Marie Marcouyeux of Washington, D.C.; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. March 19 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Cypress Creek Road and Ritchie Highway. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery.
John Jennings
John Edmond "Sonny" Jennings, 71, of Annapolis, died of heart failure Feb. 19, 2002 at his home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Jennings was born June 28, 1930, in Baltimore and attended Anne Arundel County public schools.
He was a truck driver for Potts and Callahan in Baltimore for more than 30 years.
He attended Mount Tabor United Methodist Church and was a member of Teamsters Union Local 311.
His interests included fishing, listening to music, watching the Baltimore Orioles, socializing and spending time with his family.
Surviving are three sons, Darnell and Joseph Jennings and John Jennings Jr. of Charles County; four daughters, Joyce Ann Knott of Charles County, Vanessa Forrester and Michelle Watson of Anapolis and Marie Jennings of Glen Burnie; one sister, Mary Joyce of Gambrills; one stepdaughter, Joyce Hohon of Millersville; two stepsons, Leroy Long and Howard Parker of Annapolis; his companion, Mattie Parker of Annapolis; 22 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at Mount Olive A.M.E. Church, 2 Hicks Ave., where a Christian wake will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
Mark Malesick
Mark J. Malesick, 46, of Arnold, and formerly of Mingo Junction, Ohio, died Feb. 20, 2002 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. The cause of death was unavailable.
The son of Jeanette Burns Malesick of Mingo Junction and the late John Malesick, Mr. Malesick was born on June 11, 1955, in Steubenville, Ohio. He graduated from Mingo High School in 1973 and Gulf Coast Community College. He also attended Florida State University.
He was employed by Ironworkers Local 16 in Baltimore as a journeyman.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, B. Roxanne Beck Malesick; one son, Matthew John Malesick of Mingo Junction; and two daughters, Alexandria and Melinda Malesick of the home.
Visitation is tomorrow at Hoff-Shorac Funeral Home, 235 Oakland Cemetery, Mingo Junction, from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 8:30 p.m., when the funeral will be held.

Valentine Schiller
A memorial Mass for Valentine John Schiller, 90, of Linstead on the Severn, Severna Park, was said Feb. 20, 2002 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Severna Park.
Mr. Schiller died Feb. 16 at his home. The cause of death was not available.
Born Jan. 12, 1912, on Long Island, N.Y., he graduated from New York University in 1936 with degrees in civil engineering and architecture. He subsequently worked for the Navy Department.
During World War II he designed air bases at Quantico, Va., and Camp Lejeune, N.C., and in Seattle. While at Camp Lejeune he met and married
the former Margaret Paul Davis of Morehead City, N.C., in 1943.
After the war he worked for J.E. Greiner Co. in Baltimore where he was involved with the renovation of the Naval Academy's Bancroft Hall, the design of Friendship Airport, now Baltimore-Washington International Airport, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Key Auditorium at St. John's College.
He also worked for Myers and Ayers and later the state of Maryland supervising the construction of nursing homes.
He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, an usher at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. After retirement he enjoyed fishing, gardening and playing poker.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Valentine Schiller III of Crownsville, James Schiller of Annapolis, Mary Schiller Morris of Sherwood Forest and Elliot Schiller of Linstead; two brothers, Arthur and Ernie Schiller and two sisters, Mary Schiller and Hellen Rubowich of New York; and 10 grandchildren.

Elizabeth Carroll
Services for Elizabeth B. Carroll, 86, of Annapolis, a retired Anne Arundel County public school teacher, were held this afternoon at Taylor Funeral Home Chapel.
Mrs. Carroll died Feb. 25, 2002 at Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Aug. 11, 1915, in Eastport, she was the daughter of the late Clara A. Hohlbein and Charles M. Brown. She received her bachelor's degree from the former Towson Normal School and her master's degree from the University of Maryland College Park. After teaching at Germantown Elementary School, she was an administrator at the former Annapolis Junior High School for a number of years before retiring.
She was a member of Weems Creek Baptist Church,
Her husband of 56 years, Theodore R. Carroll, died Jan. 4, 1995. Her brother, Charles M. Brown, died in 1956.
Surviving are a sister, Eleanore Chitwood of Arnold, and five nieces and nephews.

Alfred Colt
Alfred Caswell "Fred" Colt, 80, a resident of Turkey Point in Edgewater for 45 years, died of lung cancer Feb. 25, 2002 at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Colt was born in Williamsport, Pa., on April 17, 1921, and graduated in 1939 from Williamsport High School. During World War II, he was a master sergeant in the Army Air Corps's 317th Bomber Squadron from 1939 until 1946, serving in North Africa, Italy and Guam,
From 1946 to 1975 he was an electrical supply salesman for Westinghouse. From 1970 until the present he was the owner of Island Compasses North, where he repaired compasses.
Mr. Colt was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He twice was president of the Turkey Point Property Owners Association. He sailed the Chesapeake Bay and the Caribbean, and had an interest in photography, nature and the environment. He took flying lessons in his 70s, and published a newsletter for the Experimental Aircraft Association at Lee Airport. He was known as the neighborhood "Mr. Fix-It, " his family said.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Neilds "Peg" Colt, whom he married
June 3, 1944; one son, Stephen A. Colt of Orange Park, Fla.; one daughter, Cindy Welch of Edgewater; one brother, John Colt of Williamsport; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where services will be at 2 p.m. Burial will be private.
