Ray Edgar Gaskill, Sr.
Ray Edgar Gaskill, Sr., 77, of Hollywood, MD, died March 7, 2007 at his son’s residence.
Born March 31, 1929 in Fairchance, PA, he was the son of the late Sidney Orville Gaskill and Ethel Belle Wilson Gaskill.
Mr. Gaskill was a resident of St. Mary’s County for 33 years. He was a CPO (Ret) U. S. Navy, Senior Inspector (Ret) of U.S. Customs and Department of Immigration.
He fought in and was wounded during the Korean conflict.
He was an active member of Fleet Reserve Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion.
He was an avid gardener and sports fan.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Clara B. Gaskill, daughter, Debbie Gaskill, son, Ray E. Gaskill, Jr., all of Hollywood, MD, three grandsons, Ray E. Gaskill, III, Randy Gaskill, and Connor Ryan, and five great-grandchildren, Keith Gaskill, Savannah Gaskill, Makenzie Gaskill, Blaine Gaskill and Andrew Fowler.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Betty Edwards and Anita Shaw.
Inurnment will be on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Benny Franklin Smith
Benny Franklin Smith, 78, of St. Inigoes, MD, died March 24, 2007 in Southern Maryland Hospital Center, Clinton, MD.
Born February 3, 1929 in St. Mary’s County, MD, he was the son of the late Benedict F. Smith, Sr. and Marie Clayton Smith.
His parents taught and practiced the Catholic religion with him.
He was a graduate of Cardoza High School in Washington, D. C.
The most significant part of his education was learning the trade of upholstery which he made his life’s work.
He owned upholstery shops in Washington D.C. for several years.
His clientele covered all social and income levels from everyday people to members of Congress.
Benny was a perfectionist and because of the superior quality of his work, his work advertised itself.
Benny continued his work in upholstery until family needs required him to return home to St. Mary’s County until his eventual retirement.
Benny had many interests.
Amongst them were baseball and boxing, which he participated in for a few years.
The most significant of his interests was his family to whom he devoted much of his time and self.
Benny was a kindhearted, humorous person who could be stern in his dealings with others while almost in the same breath cause people to laugh.
Generosity was a virtue to Benny as he donated his time, money and skills to those he saw he could help.
Benny was an independent person who preferred to help rather than be helped or to give rather than to receive.
Benny was also devoted to reading scripture.
Benny was well received and respected by his friends, business partners and associates, customers, and most important of all his family.
Benny had a special bond with his family, especially the children.
Everyone has his or her own special memory of “Uncle Benny”. Uncle Benny always had something funny to say or a way to create a smile.
He is loved and remembered by his son, Mark Briscoe of Upper Marlboro, MD, brothers, John Smith of Fort Washington, MD and Emanuel Butler of Baltimore, MD, sisters, Ann Peterson of Washington, DC and Theresa Cassagnol of St. Inigoes, MD, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends who hold him dear to their hearts.
Benny joins in Heaven, his parents, his brother, Joseph Martin Smith, and his sisters, Rose Elizabeth Butler and Florence Dodd.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 31, 2007 from 9- 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, St. Inigoes, MD, with a
Memorial Mass celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Father Damian Shadwell will be the celebrant. Inurnment will be private.
Nancy Paige Smith
Dr. Nancy Paige Smith died this morning, Wednesday March 21, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Her children, Brenna and William, were at her bedside. Her funeral will be held at Trinity Church on Saturday, March 24th, at 11 a.m. There will be no viewing or visitation. Her children are particularly concerned that her former students are made aware of her passing and of the funeral arrangements.
Nancy joined the faculty in the Department of Political Science at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 1981 and retired from full time teaching in 2006. Her 25 years of service to the college and community included her role as coordinator of the Public Policy major and mentor to many students considering careers in this field. She was also a fervent advocate of the environment who often organized college and community events to educate the community on environmental issues.
Janet Cross, 73
Glen Burnie
Janet L. Cross, 73, passed away Dec. 6, 2006, due to complications to surgery she had on Dec. 1, 2006. Janet lived in Glen Burnie.
She left behind her loving husband of 55 years, Earl.
She is also survived by five wonderful children: Carol Burkhardt, Sharon Loudermilk, Barbara Cross, Earl Cross, and Kim Cross. She had 11 grandchildren, and 9 Great-grandchildren.
She was laid to rest on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006 at Singleton Funeral Home in Glen Burnie.

Mary Raley, 75, Mechanicsville
Mary Bernadine Raley, 75, of Mechanicsville died on Dec. 7, 2006 at the St. Mary's Nursing Center in Leonardtown following a lengthy illness.
Born February 5, 1931 in Loveville, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Bernard H. Russell and Mary Elvie Johnson Russell. "Bea" as she was affectionately referred to by her family and friends, was the loving wife of the late John Barker "Jack" Raley, Sr., who she married on June 30, 1951.
She was the devoted mother of Cindy Pilkerton, Debby Greenwell and her husband Larry, Bernie Raley and his wife Irene, and John B. Raley, Jr. and his wife, Missy all of Mechanicsville; her grandchildren, Michael Pilkerton, Jr., Bernie Raley, Jr., Russell Greenwell, Katie Greenwell, Jaime Raley, Ryan Raley, Brooke Raley and one great-grandchild, Matthew Pilkerton.
She is also survived by her sister Dorothy Raley of Leonardtown, and preceded in death by her sister, Elvie (Tenny) Mae Simpson.
She was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County and a graduate of St. Mary's Academy.
She enjoyed traveling and was revered for her floral arrangements and decorations.
Her house was the hub of all family activities, and her greatest passion was her family and the times spent with them.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 10, 2006 from 2:00 - 5:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, where Prayers will be said at 3:00 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 11, 2006 at 10:00 AM in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. Peter Alliata officiating.
Interment will follow in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers for Mrs. Raley were her son John B. Raley, Jr., her grandsons Michael Pilkerton, Jr., Russell Greenwell, and Bernie Raley, Jr., and her nephews Floyd A. Raley, Jr. and William H. Simpson, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were Katie Greenwell, Jaime Raley, Ryan Raley and Brooke Raley.

Tommy Turlington, 85
Colton's Point
Thomas Everett "Tommy" Turlington, 85, of Coltons Point, formerly of Rockville, died December 8, 2006 in Colton's Point.
Born June 29, 1921 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Reuben Athey and Daisy Estelle Mattingly Turlington.
He is survived by his son: Thomas Richard Turlington and his wife Jennifer of Myersville; brother: Athey Donald Turlington and his wife Betty of Lady Lake, FL; sister in-law: Mamie Turlington of Waldorf, and 3 grandchildren: Alan, Shena and Ryan.
He was preceded in death by his son: Joseph Michael Turlington; siblings: Helen Kellis and James Douglas Turlington.
Mr. Turlington moved to St. Mary's County in 1975 from Rockville.
He worked as a contract specialist for Defense Mapping until his retirement in 1975.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Pacific Campaign from August 29, 1942 - October 7, 1945.
He was a member of General McArthur's staff.
He also was a member of AARP. He enjoyed reading and fishing.
The family will receive friends on Monday, Dec. 11, 2006 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, where Prayers will be said at 5:00 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006 at 10:00 AM in Holy Angels Catholic Church, 21335 Colton's Point Rd., Avenue, MD 20609 with Fr. John Barry officiating.
Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown.

John M. Quade, 50
Mechanicsville
John Michael Quade, 50, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Compton, died Oct. 1, 2006 in Mechanicsville.
Born Feb. 26, 1956 in Leonardtown, he was the son of Lewis Benjamin and Betty Lee Morgan Quade, Sr. of Avenue, and the son-in-law Mary C. Long of Mechanicsville.
He was the loving husband of Linda Marie Quade.
He was the devoted father of: Tonia Quade of Hollywood, Leona Quade of Mechanicsville, step-son: John Small of Port Republic, and step-daughter: Jenna Small of California.
He is survived by his siblings: Pearl King of Owings, Roaslie Demko of Lexington Park, Betty Knott of Leonardtown, Lewis Quade, Jr. and Tammy Yates both of Clements, and 11 grandchildren.
Mr. Quade was a life long St. Mary's County resident where he worked for the State Highway Administration for 33 years until his retirement in April of 2005.
He also worked as a delivery driver for Northeastern Supply since his retirement.
For many years, he played horseshoes for Backroad Inn and he loved to play cards and dance.
He also enjoyed making people laugh and he was loved by many and we will miss him.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Oct. 5, from 5 - 8 p.m. in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, with Prayers being said at 7 p.m.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, Oct. 6, at 10 a.m. in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Chapel with Fr. Peter Alliata officiating.
Interment will follow in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf.

John Sivak, 84
Lexington Park
John Sivak, 84, of Lexington Park, died July 9, 2006 in George Washington University Hospital, Washington, DC.
Born Aug. 30, 1921 in Hermanville, he was the son of the late Paul and Pauline Lukac Sivak.
Mr. Sivak retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1984 after 30 years of service. He was a lifetime farmer and owned Sivak Produce for 23 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus from 1954 until the present having served as Past Grand Knight and Past District Deputy Knight. John was a member of the St. Mary’s County Farm Bureau, Soil Conservation and the Rural Conservation District.
He is survived his wife, Mary Lucille Trossbach Sivak, whom he married July 19, 1952 in St. Michael’s Church, Ridge, three daughters, Mary Lou Garrison of Lexington Park, Rose Sivak of Lexington Park, Agnes Winans of Wichita, KS, two sons, Alan Sivak and Bruce Sivak both of Lexington Park, 11 grandchildren, a sister, Sister Mary Augustine of Grand Rapids, MI, Pauline Hoffman of Sterling, VA, and a brother, Francis Sivak of Middleton, OH. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles David Sivak and two brothers, Albert Sivak and Paul Sivak.
The family received friends July 11, at St. Cecelia’s Church, St. Mary’s City, with prayers recited at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian was celebrated July 12, at St. Cecelia’s Church. The Reverend Damian Shadwell officiated. Interment followed in St. James Cemetery, Lexington Park.
