Ethelyn Naomi King, 90
Passed On: 06/03/2014

Ethelyn Naomi King, 90 of Hollywood, MD, passed on June 3, 2014 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall, MD. She was born in Warsaw, VA, on February 18, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Absalom Walter Tallent and the late Josie Blanch Tallent.
Ethelyn was a member of the American Legion.
In addition to her parents, Ethelyn was predeceased by her husband, Harry M. King, three brothers and her sisters.
Ethelyn is survived by her son, Ronnie King, daughter, Chris Hester, 4 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends for Ethelyn's Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 1 to 3 PM at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622.

David John Rau, 72
Passed On: 06/03/2014

David John Rau, 72, of Compton, MD, died June 3, 2014 at his nephew's residence after a battle with prostate cancer.
Mr. Rau grew up in the Lower Merion Township outside of Philadelphia, PA. He was born on October 22, 1941, the son of the late John F. Rau and Gertrude E. (Turner) Rau.
Mr. Rau graduated from Lower Merion High School and Ursinus College earning a BA in history. Mr. Rau retired from the St. Mary's Board of Education in 1994. He taught for 30 years at Margaret Brent High School and Middle School. He enjoyed farming and growing tobacco on his farm in Compton. He also enjoyed playing pitch and eating crabs. He left the farm to two colleges to create two scholarships for St. Mary's seniors, at Ursinus and Springfield College, MA.
He is survived by his sister, Shirley Rau Freyman, of New Jersey; his brother-in-law, Robert Dempsey, of PA; three nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his sister, Audrey Rau Dempsey, and his brother-in-law, Al Freyman.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650, followed by a graveside service at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Queen of Peace Cemetery, 38888 Dr. Johnson Road, Mechanicsville, MD 20659.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1041 Route 3 N. Building A, Gambrills, MD 21054 or the Tri-County Animal Shelter, 6707 Animal Shelter Road, Hughesville, MD 20637.

Richard Clyde "Dick" Shoemaker, 74

Richard Clyde "Dick" Shoemaker, 74, of Leonardtown, MD, passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 2, 2014 at his residence. Born on January 1, 1940, in Lancaster, PA., he was the loving son of the late Lillian Hazel Shank and Clyde Frank Shoemaker. Dick was the loving husband of Grace Marie Shoemaker. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen Jo Abell Shoemaker. Dick is survived by his children: Frank Richard Shoemaker, (Kim) of Magnolia, TX, Erin Kathleen Shoemaker and Cary Colleen Shoemaker, both of Leonardtown, MD, Kimberly Jo Guy (Brian) of Clements, MD, 9 grandchildren: Cameron, Frank JR, James, Johnna Shoemaker, Nick, Preston and Grant Gass, Ashley Jo and Austin Guy. Dick enlisted in the United State Navy on January 16, 1959, during his service to our county he served for 3 and 1/2 tours in Vietnam, from March 1969 to June 1972. He also served aboard the U.S.S. Nimitz for one tour for Fleet Air Reserve Unit VQ1 for VAW116; and he earned an enormous amount of awards while in service for his heroism, and dedication to the United States Navy. To name a few: Air Medal for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight or for a single act of heroism against an armed enemy, and Presidential Unit Citation for service in a unit cited in the name of President for outstanding performance in action, he retired in June 29, 1977. Dick was a member of the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department from 1980 to 1990, and was awarded Fireman of the Year in 1981, and remained in the top 10 of fire calls from 1980 to 1986. Dick worked as an Airplane Technician for DynCorp, retiring on March 30, 2005. He was loved and respected by countless friends, and family. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 9, 2014 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 pm with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 11:00 am in St. John's Catholic Church, Hollywood, MD, with Father Ray Schmidt officiating. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD. Pallbearers will be: Clem Johnson, Nick Gass, Preston Gass, Brian Guy, Kenny Scully, and Kevin Abell. Contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary's, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650, and/or the Leonardtown Vol. Fire Department, P.O. Box 50, Leonardtown, MD 20650.

Nancy Jane Mountain, 59

Nancy Jane Mountain, 59 of Waldorf, MD, passed on June 2, 2014 at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was born in Quantico, VA, on July 3, 1954. She was the daughter of Robert E. Blevins and Jean Carnwell Blevins.
Nancy was a business owner since 1990 mentoring and helping children. She enjoyed Bible Study, volunteering, organizing a support group and writing.
Nancy is survived by beloved husband of 22 years, Steven D. Mountain, parents, Robert E. Blevins and Jean Carnwell Blevins, mother-in-law, Sandra May Mountain, son, Robert Colin Bearden (Hannah Simpson), daughter, Katherine Alaine Simms, God-daughter, Evelyn Crusat, brothers, Robert Edward Blevins, Jr. (Dawn), William Blevins (Sue), sisters, Jean Ann Schappet, Catherine Wenger, grandchildren, Patrick Colin Beardon, Logan Tyler Beardon, Katelyn Marie Sloan, Megan Marie Beardon, Gabriel Denee Simms, Raeanna Renee Simms, Kara Lenee Simms, and many other relatives and friends.
Family will receive friends for Nancy's Memorial Gathering on Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 3 to 6 PM at Calvary Chapel at Middleton Hall, 4045 Renner Rd, Waldorf, MD 20602. A Memorial Service will be at 5:00 PM, with Pastor Paul Goodwin officiating.

Arlonia Thurmon, 95
Lexington Park, MD

On Sunday, June 29, 2014, Arlonia Thurmon, 95, of Lexington Park, MD, passed on peacefully from this life at the Hospice House of St. Mary's. She was born on February 11, 1919 in East Juliette, Georgia, to the late Mathis and Bessie Tillman. Mother Thurmon was educated in the Georgia Public School System where she completed the sixth grade. She met and married the late Ivory Moreland Thurmon in 1936, where they resided in Georgia until 1943, moving to the District of Columbia briefly before settling in St. Mary's County, Md. God blessed them with thirteen children: George (deceased), Grealy Lewis (deceased), Theodore (deceased), Jesse of Washington, D.C., Steven (Millicent - deceased) of Lexington Park, Md., Ivory Jr. (deceased), June Harlow of New York, Rufus (Elisabeth) of Severn, Md., Gina of Lexington Park, Md., Ruby (deceased), Earnest (Deborah) of Upper Marlboro, Md., Gloria Ivory (Keith) of Lexington Park, Md. and Felton of Lexington Park, Md.
Arlonia was employed as a laundry worker at Patuxent Naval Air Station and Hills Laundry in Leonardtown, Maryland, for twenty years.
She was united and joined the First Baptist Church of Carver Heights, in 1946 under the leadership of the late Alfred Chambers and continued faithfully with Reverend Roderick McClanahan. Mother Thurmon served in several capacities over sixty years as a member of the Willing Workers, The Missionaries, The Pastors Aide and Deaconess Ministries. The church honored her for Dedication and Commitment as one of "The Mothers" of the church.
In addition to her parents, husband and five children, Arlonia was also preceded in death by her brother, Joseph "Plumb" Tillman.
She leaves to cherish warm and loving memories her children, Jesse, Steven, June, Rufus, Gina, Earnest, Gloria and Felton, twenty-three grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives, friends and a wonderful church family.
Family will unite with relatives and friends on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 for visitation at 10:00 am until time of service at 11:00 am at First Missionary Baptist Church, 46370 Pegg Lane, Lexington Park, MD. Interment to follow at First Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, 21075 Hermanville Road, Lexington Park, MD.

Francis Aloysius "Shine" Dickerson, 80

Francis Aloysius Dickerson, "Shine", as he was affectionately known, 80 of Mechanicsville, MD, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2014 at George Washington Hospital, to be with his Master. Shine was born on December 12, 1933 to the late George Allen and Elizabeth Dickerson in Abell, MD. He was the 9th child born and the youngest of his siblings. Shine received his education in the St. Mary's County Public Schools. He later married Elizabeth Thomas Dickerson and from this union, they had one son, Francis.
In 1955, he joined the U. S. Army where he served our country with courage and bravery to protect our freedoms. He was honorably discharged in 1957. After leaving the military, Shine began doing what he loved to do; working on the water and building homes. He first built his own home and also helped build homes for family and friends. In 1967, Shine joined Labor Local #832 and worked on various construction jobs. In 1974, he went to work for Baltimore, Gas and Electric (BG&E) doing construction work, where he worked until his retirement.
Shine was a person of good moral character. He was a kind-hearted, very likeable and fun-loving person. He was always a positive person and loyal to his family and friends. His nickname "Shine" is so appropriate for him; he is truly a "shining" star to all who knew him or had the opportunity to meet him.
Shine knew that life was about being happy and being able to enjoy life. He had several hobbies and interests which made him happy and enjoy his life. He enjoyed going to boat races, car shows and meeting up with the "boys" at the race track. Shine also enjoyed dancing, relaxing in his recliner and watching westerns and hanging out with his homeboys, shooting the breeze, at the Chaptico store. He had a passion and love for antique cars. Shine loved to restore old cars, with his grandson, Dwayne, right by his side.
Shine was preceded in death by his parents George and Elizabeth Dickerson; six siblings, George, Herman, Earl, Aubrey, Paul and Marjorie Dickerson and his mother and father-in-law, Harry and Mary Thomas.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Elizabeth Dickerson; loving son, Francis (Elaine); one sister, Rita Frederick ; brother, Joseph (Joe) Dickerson ; seven adored grandchildren, Charity Dickerson, Shanika Cutchember, Tomika Cutchember Maddox, Lakisha Powell, Derrick Cutchember, Dwayne Dickerson and Elesite Lyles; eight great-grandchildren; seven sisters-in law, Mary Dickerson, Louise Dickerson, Vincena Dickerson, Shirley Dickerson, Caroline Countiss, Agnes Queen and Rose Shade; two special friends, Jimmy Parker and Kenny Armstrong and a host of other relatives and friends.
Family will unite with relatives and friends on Saturday, July 5, 2014 for visitation at 10 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 21340 Colton's Point Road, Avenue, MD. Interment to follow at Sacred Heart Church Cemetery, Bushwood, MD. Arrangements by Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home.

Raymond Dewey Sexton, 82

Raymond Dewey Sexton, 82, of Lexington Park, MD, passed away on June 26, 2014, at Hospice House in Callaway, MD.
He was born January 24, 1932 in Coeburn, VA, to the late Oma Angeline Sexton and Lonnie Moore.
Raymond moved here from Coeburn, VA, to work for Geddings Logging, and then began doing carpentry work. Raymond married Thelma Ruth Carter on June 27, 1951 at the Church of the Nazarene. Together, they spent 63 years of marriage. He proudly served as a Corporal in the United States Army from 1958 until 1960 serving in the military police. Upon his return to Lexington Park, he continued working as a carpenter and mason, helping to build on Patuxent River Naval Air Station, the Thomas Johnson Bridge, Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant and for many local companies through the years. Raymond enjoyed hunting, fishing and visiting and spending time with family and friends in Coeburn, VA. He most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Raymond is survived by his children, Ronald D. Sexton (Stephanie) of Culpepper, VA, Patricia Warren (Terry) of Lake Jackson, TX, Kenneth R. Sexton (Evelyn) of Lexington Park, MD, Deborah Raspa (Salvatore, Jr.) of California, MD, Melissa Gould (Joseph), Raymond D. Sexton, II and Anthony D. Sexton all of Lexington Park, MD; Siblings, Steward Sexton, Freida K. Sexton of Coeburn, VA, and Wilson K. Sexton (Peggy) of Lexington Park, MD; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one son Raymond Dale Sexton.
Family will receive friends for Raymond's Life Celebration on Monday, June 30, 2014 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. with prayers recited at 7:00 p.m. at Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., at Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. Interment will follow at Charles Memorial Gardens in Leonardtown, MD 20650.

Mary Katherine Love Walker, 48

Mary Katherine Love Walker passed away at her home in Saint Inigoes, MD, on June 26, 2014 after an extended battle with breast cancer. She was 48 years old.
Born in Martinsville, VA, on April 12, 1966, she is the daughter of the late William Taft Love, Jr. and Zoe Chapman Love.
She was a graduate of Martinsville High School and attended Southern Seminary. She was a flight attendant with US Airways for 25 years.
Mary is survived by her husband, John P. Walker, III, and two step-children, Bethany Lynn Walker (Michael Conway) of Portsmith, NH and Jonathan Lynch Walker (Sara) of Laurel, MD. Also surviving are her mother, Zoe Chapman Love of Martinsville, VA; her brother, William Taft Love, III (Robin), and their children, Taft, Clair and Zoe, all of Sausalito, CA. She is preceded in death by her father, William T. Love, Jr.
All services will be private.
