Millicent Frances Thurmon, 67
Lexington Park, MD

On June 25, 2014, Millicent Frances Thurmon passed away after a very long battle with chronic lung disease. Though Millicent was small in stature, her faith was very strong and her belief in Jehovah helped her carry on. She dedicated herself to Jehovah and was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on August 1, 2009. She was a faithful Witness until her passing and her love for Jehovah was strong.
Millicent was born on September 15, 1946 in St. Mary's County, Maryland, an only child to John Ernest Berry and Elizabeth Berry Harris. Her cousins who she grew up with were Kenneth Price of California, Rose Pope of Washington, D.C., Bernadette Trowell of Washington D.C., Sandra Harris of Washington D.C., Agnes Butler of Oakville, Ann Reid, deceased, Michael King of Oakville MD, Deborah Baker of Oakville (who she called her little sister). Millicent was educated for 12 years in the Parochial School System and graduated from Cardinal Gibbons Institute. She continued to further her education by attending the Margaret Murray Washington School of Nursing in Washington, D.C., where she was elected class president and graduated with honors.
After classroom education, Millicent then became affiliated with Washington Hospital Center, Freedmans Hospital, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Children's Hospital and National Lutheran Home of the Aging for her internships. After completion of internship training, Millicent graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her first job was at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. After working for shortly over a year at
Washington Hospital Center, Millicent moved back to Maryland, and was hired to work at Patuxent Naval Air Station Hospital. She also performed with the singing group, the Shantells, which included Agnes Butler, Signe Fenwick and Charlotte Fenwick and was invited to perform with recording artist Maxine Brown. Millicent declined to follow her entertainment aspirations to pursue family life upon reuniting with her old friend, Steven Thurmon, of Washington, D.C., who had just finished a tour of duty in Vietnam, as a soldier in the United States Army.
Millicent and Steven married in 1968. Of their union, Millicent and Steven and have two daughters, Kimberly and Cynthia.
Millicent continued to work at the Hospital at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station as a Licensed Practical Nurse and a Consultation Coordinator. She retired from the Patuxent River Naval Air Station Hospital in 1997 after 16 years of service.
Over the years, Millicent was a member of various organizations, including the St. Mary's County Hospital Association of the Board of Directors, a member of NAPNES (National Association for Practical Nurse Education Services, Inc.), American Federation of Government Employees, Lexington Park Bowling League National Women's singles and Mixed Doubles, P.T.A. (Parent Teachers Association), Band Boosters Association, Lifetime and the V.F.W. (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Ladies Auxiliary. Her hobbies included reading, singing and crocheting.
Millicent is survived by her husband, Steven Thurmon; two children, Kimberly Stevette Ali of Sicklerville, New Jersey, and Cynthia Nichole Thurmon of Washington, D.C.
Millicent is also survived by her mother, Elizabeth Harris of Lexington Park, Maryland; her father, John Ernest Berry of Oakville, MD; three aunts, Mary Lee Greenfield, of Landover, MD, Anna King of Oakville, MD, and Agnes Price of Hagerstown, MD; two grandchildren, Jameel Steven Ali and Amirah Iman Ali; one son-in-law, Jameel Khataab Ali of Sicklerville, New Jersey, and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, family and friends.
Millicent was a very kind and friendly person, who would always greet you with a smile and a "How are you Darling?" Millicent will be remembered for her warm and friendly personality and memorizing singing voice.
Family will unite with relatives and friends on Saturday, July 5, 2014 for visitation at 9 am until time of service at 10 am at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 20770 Seth Ct., Callaway, MD. Interment will be at Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD.

LCDR Harvey Charles Schutte, USN (Ret.), 75, of Mechanicsville, MD, passed away on June 25, 2014 at his home.
Born on October 14, 1938, in Tucumari, NM, he was the son on the late Clyde and Zoe Wright.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Janie Schutte; his children, Cheryl Arrington, Lori Boarman and her husband, Beanie Boarman, Sharon Thomas and her fiancé, Donny Newkirk, Richard Reynolds, Paige Wagner and her fiancé Steve Rosado; his sister, Sandra Jacobs; his grandchildren, Justin Reynolds, Andrew Boarman, Jonathan Boarman, Brooke Arrington, Alyssa Thomas, Kane Wagner, Aspen Higgs, Taylor Arrington, Adam Wagner, Samantha Thomas, Mathew Wagner, Austin Thomas, Shane Arrington, Hailey Sams; his great-grandson, Kamdyn Amaker; his nephew, David Bell; and his niece, Leslie Coe. He is preceded in death by his parents.
A Graveside Service will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Kelsie Lynn Stillwell "Kell Bell", of Chaptico, MD, passed away at home on June 25, 2014. Born May 24, 2014 in Leonardtown, MD, she was the daughter of Jessica Marie Vermillion and Joseph A. Stillwell of Chaptico, MD.
Kelsie is survived by her siblings; Kylie Ann Marie Stillwell of Chaptico, MD, and Zachery Wade Smith of Farmington, DE, paternal grandparents; Eddie and Patsy Stillwell, paternal great-grandparents, James and Elizabeth Latham, and Hilda Stillwell, maternal grandparents, Richard and Patricia Vermillion, paternal great-grandparents Connie Butts, Chester and Wilma Shockley, aunts Brandy Vermillion, Sherri Stillwell, and uncles, Jason Vermillion and Rick Stillwell. Pallbearers will be: Edward George Stillwell and Richard Edward Stillwell. Honorary pallbearers will be: James M. Latham, Sr. and Richard W. Vermillion.

John Loebner, 65

John Loebner, 65, of Denver, CO, passed away on June 25, 2014 at his home.
He was born on January 17, 1949 in New York, NY, to Katharine Crane (Cox) Reed of Mechanicsville, MD, and the late Medell Loebner.
Raised in the Washington DC area and Prince Georges County, MD, John graduated from Oxon Hill Senior High School, and entered into the military. John was a seaman in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War era from 1967 - 1969. Later, he attended college which brought him to the city of Denver, Colorado.
Having worked with the Denver Public Library System for 21 years until his retirement in 2004, where he was often called "the hardest working guy" in his department. John would faithfully volunteer for any special events or projects both large and small and staff knew they could depend on him to get the job done. John was well-loved, not only by staff, but by the customers he'd see at the library and out in the neighborhoods where he worked.
John also enjoyed many creative endeavors. He was an accomplished artist, writer, lyricist and poet. He enjoyed all the arts from music to theater to books to late night Public Radio. With a wry sense of humor and an introspective and intelligent wit, he was able to join in on any conversation and leave you with a different perspective and a smile.
John's compassion, respect, and always a kind word for those less fortunate will never be forgotten. He is lovingly remembered and will be forever missed by not only his family, but by his dear friends from Denver, and the fellowship of St. John's Episcopal Cathedral.
In addition to his father, John was predeceased by his two brothers, Daniel Loebner and Stephen Reed; and step-father, Melvin Grimes Reed.
John is survived by his mother Katharine; sisters, Leah Loebner, Cassandra Reed, Susan McGovern, and Cathy Angus.
Arrangements are being handled by Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD. 20622. A Private memorial will be held in Maryland, and Denver, Colorado.

Michael Patrick Cannon, 64
Huntingtown, Maryland

Michael Patrick Cannon succumbed to his battle with lung cancer at his home in Huntingtown, Maryland, on Tuesday, June 24, 2014. He was 64 years old.
Mike was born on December 9, 1949 to Vincent Patrick and Margaret Aileen Cannon. He joined the military after graduating from Robert E. Perry High School in Rockville, MD, in 1966. He served two tours as Specialist First Class in Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol of the 1st Calvary Division, Airborne Rangers. He was honorably discharged as a first private in 1970, and received the following decorations, medals, and commendations: National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Air Medal, three Bronze Star Medals (two with "V" device for acts of valor), AFHM (2nd class), a Gallantry Cross Ribbon with Palm, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, and two Purple Hearts. His exposure to Agent Orange during Vietnam, caused a heart condition and the cancer that ultimately took his life.
He went on to get his bachelor of arts in English and Physical Education from Towson University in 1972. He taught from the time he graduated until the late 1970's, when he went to work for his father-in-law at Chopp and Company, Inc. (now Probuild) in Waldorf, MD, where he worked for over thirty years.
In 1970, Mike met Dana Marlene Chopp on a blind date, and they fell in love. They surprised both of their families by eloping just ten months after they met. They celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary in 2013.
In addition to his wife, Dana, Mike is survived by daughter, Mae Elise and son-in-law, Richard Roby Fisk, Jr.; daughter, Sara Elizabeth and grandson, Daniel Lee; daughter, Josie Mae and son-in-law, Edward Rigney; and son, Jeffrey Patrick. He is also survived by all 12 of his brothers and sisters and 49 nieces and nephews. He will be met by angels and his son, Daniel Robert, who passed away on October 28 1978 date, in heaven.
Mike was a compassionate and gregarious person who went out of his way to make friends with everyone he met. His loss will be deeply felt by his family, his friends, and the whole southern Maryland community.
Visitation will be held at Rausch Funeral Home, located at 4405 Broomes Island Road in Port Republic, Maryland, between 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 on Friday June 27, 2014. The service will be held the following day, Saturday June 28, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Church by the Chesapeake, 335 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, MD. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Lisa A. Viens, 46, of Stevensville, Maryland, passed away on June 23, 2014 in Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was born on June 25, 1967 in Prince Frederick, Maryland to the late John O. and M. Lucille Rainey. Lisa was a homemaker, and a very thorough one at that. She kept her home and her gardens in perfect condition. When not tending to home, Lisa enjoyed the beach, especially Ocean City.
She is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Norman K. Viens, sister of Linda Walton and her husband John, Kathy Walton and her husband Eugene, Bonnie Rainey and Patricia Hall and her husband Joseph. She is also survived by many other family members and friends.
The family will receive friends on Monday June 30, 2014 from 1-2 PM at the Rausch Funeral Home, 4405 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, Maryland where a Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Maryland Hepatology Dept., 22 S. Greene Street N3W50, Baltimore, MD 21201-1595

Clara Belle Gaskill, 84

Clara Belle Gaskill, 84, of Hollywood, MD, passed away on June 23, 2014 at her residence of natural causes.
Born on August 23, 1929, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late James Blaine Pritt and Elizabeth Tiffner Pritt.
Clara was a long time resident of St. Mary's County. She married her beloved husband, Ray Edgar Gaskill, Sr, on January 26, 1952 and was a proud Navy wife. Together they celebrated 55 years of marriage before his passing in March 2007. She had a flair for entertaining and decorating. She enjoyed painting, decorating and crafting. She was an excellent cook and homemaker. However, her greatest love was for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Clara is survived by her children, Debbie Patridge (Danny) of Corpus Christi, TX and Ray E Gaskill, Jr of Hollywood, MD; her sister, Adalay Popp (Willie) of Uniontown, PA; her grandchildren, Ray E Gaskill, III (Bobby Jo), Randy Gaskill (Amber), and Connor Ryan; and her great-grandchildren, Keith Gaskill, Mackenzie Gaskill, Addison Gaskill, Savannah Gaskill, Andrew Fowler and Blaine Gaskill. In addition to her parents and her husband, she is also preceded in death by her siblings, Virginia Krizner, Charles Pritt, Noah James Pritt, Meredith Sutphen, Evelena Pritt, and Mary Rae Gaster.
A Graveside Service will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Nancy Lee Courtney Ciancio, 52, of Leonardtown, MD, passed away on June 23, 2014 at Hospice House of St. Mary's in Callaway, MD.
Born on May 23, 1962, in Leonardtown, MD, she was the daughter of John T. Courtney of Lusby, MD and Cecilia Agnes Clark of Scotland, MD.
Nancy was a long time resident of St. Mary's County. She is a 1980 graduate of Great Mills High School. After graduation she earned her cosmetology license. She owned and operated Woody's Barber Shop in Hollywood, MD. She loved to spend time in Florida and at the beach. She also greatly enjoyed riding her Harley.
In addition to her parents, Nancy is survived by her children, Douglas Cooksey, John Cooksey (Whitney) and Benjamin Ciancio; her siblings, Judy Ann Courtney, John Kenny Courtney; and one grandchild, Piper LeeAnn Cooksey.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated by Reverend Rob McNutt on June 27, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at Faith Bible Church, 26325 Three Notch Rd, Mechanicsville, MD 20659.
